Sony DSC-W1DCResource have posted their review of the new 5 megapixel Sony DSC-W1 digital compact camera.

“While not as small as its main competitor (the Canon PowerShot S500), the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W1 is a very impressive compact digital camera. It packs a 5 Megapixel CCD, 3X optical zoom lens, and large 2.5” LCD into a stylish, all-metal body.”

Birte PersonThe second PhotographyBLOG Portfolio has been submitted by Birte Person, otherwise known as tootsie on the PhotographyBLOG Gallery.

“My portfolio is all of the same theme, the environment, which I have been involved with all my life, both through teaching and practising. I am retired now but am involved with the breeding of five rare species of frogs. Thus the mention of many ponds when listing my photos. These frogs are let go into areas where they used to be abundant but are now in such low numbers that they are almost extinct. All due to pollution and mans encroachment into their environment.

I live on the Sapphire Coast of Australia which is about 100 kilometers south of the Capital of New South Wales, Sydney. The area consist mainly of beaches and temperate rainforest.

I started photographing seriously in January 2004, because of age I am not able to do as much as I used to but doing this keeps my interest in the environment besides looking after the frogs.

I also love doing abstractions of nature, the things people do not normally see.

To sum it up I love nature but cringe when I look at the things being destroyed in the name of progress.”

Epson Stylus Pro 4000Vincent Oliver over at Photo-i has just started an interactive review of the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 17” wide desktop printer.

“I should point out that the Pro 4000 is a lot bigger than you might expect. The two delivery men had considerable difficulty in manoeuvring the box through the front door (my door isn?t small either) the printer had to be unpacked in the lobby. It also took two men to carry the printer upstairs to my studio and it dominates a large portion of my office desk. Just in case you thought of picking one up on your way home after your Saturday shopping, then forget it. The box won?t fit in your car boot/trunk unless of course you drive a truck. “

Stephen Voss’ article “On Digital Photography” in Digital Web Magazine is a well-written personal perspective on the megapixel race, colour management, professional photographers and publishing images on the web (found via Digital Photography Blog).

“Unfortunately, just like late night infomercials, it’s easy to get sucked into fancy descriptions and “cutting edge” technology with these claims of increased megapixels. Just because a camera is advertised as having 3 megapixels doesn’t mean that it’s using all 3 of those megapixels to capture an image. Furthermore, the size and shape of these pixels play a huge part in the quality of the information they capture. As an example, a professional 3 megapixel will often outperform (in terms of detail, color captured and overall image quality) a consumer-grade 5 megapixel camera due to having a larger imaging chip, in addition to better in-camera image processing.”

Freelance outdoor photographer Jean-Fran?ois Ma?on has been traveling around the world with photography as a main driver since the age of 14, specializing in landscape, adventure and travel photography. Jean-Fran?ois has kindly allowed me to publish his excellent article “Digital Photography in the Wilderness”:

Is digital photography up to the challenges of extended outdoor adventures in harsh conditions? A year ago, I would probably have answered: no.That is, until this spring, when I could not resist the call of the new EOS 10D. And when I embarked this autumn on a climbing expedition to the Himalayas, I intended to photograph digital. The purpose of this article is to share my planning process and conclusions, focusing on the specific questions and issues that outdoor photographers face on longer trips.

Photo.net’s latest technique-based article looks at TCs (teleconverters, multipliers) and their effect on image quality.

“TCs are very useful accessories but they work best when low power TCs are used with high quality prime lenses. If you’re looking to preserve the maximum amount of image quality from your prime lens, use a 1.4x TC and preferably one made by the lens manufacturer. 3rd party TCs can be quite good, especially when used with digital cameras with small sensors since in that case the image quality at the edge of the full 43mm image circle used in full frame 35mm format isn’t seen by the sensor.”

Sony DSC-W1Steves Digicams have posted their review of the new 5 megapixel Sony DSC-W1 digital compact camera.

“The overall image quality in 2592x1944/Fine mode is excellent, for the most part the default settings produce well saturated and properly exposed pictures. The user can control the saturation, contrast and sharpness so you can “dial in” just the right look for your images. I found that the automatic white balance did its job well and only under some very mixed lighting did I need to manually set the color temperature. I was pleased with our outdoor test shots. The images were sharp, well saturated, and there was very little noise in open blue sky areas.”
