Judges Comments:
“Beautiful effect on the water. Very serene photo. It evokes a sense of peace and quiet, and yet you can almost hear the water coming down the creek.”
“This photograph captures the theme, Movement, immediately. The flowing water, the flow of the stream from top to bottom, and the mixture of whites, grays, and blues add to the feeling of movement. The contrast of the intense green moss also make an impact against the cool water and create a strong composition.”
Prize: Photobird.com one-year subscription with 100 megabytes of storage space, kindly donated by Photobird.com.

“Excellent perspective on this photo. It’s a welcome change from the viewpoint most people have of horse races and puts the viewer right there next to the action.”
“Good compostition with the winning horse exiting the frame and the chasing horses entering it.”

Mike Johnston’s weekly column looks at the tricky issue of authenticity and the ethics of cooperating with your subject in photography:
“But, even for journalists, there is a very hazy line where enlisting cooperation is concerned. Someone in the photo.net thread mentioned the fact that Dorothea Lange may have “directed” the migrant mother and her children to get her famous Migrant Mother picture. But does that “lie” in any significant way about the reality of the situation? Roy Stryker, boss of the Farm Security Adminstration photographers, had this to say: “People would say to me, that migrant woman looks posed and I’d say she does not look posed. That picture is as uninvolved with the camera as any picture I’ve ever seen.”

LetsGoDigital have posted their 6-page review of the Canon EOS 300D DSLR.
“However not free of mistakes the camera delivers an astonishing image quality. The user has or gets a camera with which photo realistic final results can be made without a problem. The light weight of the camera also adds to the convenience that Canon is admired for. The camera is very easy to operate. In fact we are talking about a camera with the friendliness of a compact but the quality of a reflex.”

LetsGoDigital have posted a new review of the Sony Cybershot DSC-P32, a 3.2 megapixel pint and shoot digicam that sells for around $229.
“The Sony DSC-P32 is a digital entry level camera but it certainly deserves its place amongst the many 3 Megapixel cameras because of its user-friendliness of the various settings and the fine image quality. The image resolution of 3 Megapixels gives a good result, also when the user of this camera likes to see his or her digital images printed on paper. The DSC-P32 offers everything a starter could wish for; convenience and user friendliness.”

DIWA Press Release 05/03/04
Friday, 5th March 2004: The Digital Imaging Websites Association (DIWA) is delighted to announce that Steve’s Digicams (www.steves-digicams.com) has joined the DIWA team. The number one* US-based online digital photography review site, Steve’s Digicams joins 8 existing DIWA members based across Europe.
“I’m delighted to confirm my association with DIWA,” commented Steve Sanders, founder and webmaster of Steve’s Digicams. He added: “I look forward to being an important part of the DIWA team, helping to establish DIWA’s digital imaging product awards as the most valued and trusted in the industry, both for consumers and the industry.”
Ian Burley, DIWA general manager, explained: “The addition of Steve’s Digicams to the DIWA line is a huge boost for the realisation of DIWA’s ambitious goals.” He added: “DIWA has a regular dialogue with product manufacturers in the industry. Again and again we are hearing that the DIWA formula of rigorous and standardised product test scoring is just what the industry has been looking for. With Steve’s Digicams onboard, DIWA has a vital presence in the USA. This news makes DIWA no longer just an interesting new idea from Europe, but a global force to be reckoned with.”
Like all DIWA members, Steve’s Digicams adopts DIWA’s unique product test scoring system to evaluate products being reviewed. By statistical comparison of standardised data from a minimum quota of test scores per product, DIWA determines if that product has met the strict criteria for a Gold, Silver or Bronze award. These awards are made throughout the year in addition to annual Platinum awards for the single most outstanding product in its category.
The DIWA website, at www.diwa-awards.com, functions as a multi-lingual portal to reviews on all member websites, now spanning the USA, Norway, Denmark, Turkey, Slovenia, The Netherlands, Poland, the UK and Spain. DIWA is actively seeking to include members from more countries and expects to make further announcements later this year.

Artist David Hockney has publically denounced photography as a legitimate art form in the Guardian newspaper, claiming “that photographs can be so easily altered these days that they can no longer be seen as factual or true”. Hockney claims that art photography is “dulll” and that the validity of war photography has been cast into doubt by digital imaging techniques. Apparently “Hockney hopes there will be a positive side-effect for painting, which will gain in standing in reverse proportion.” Hmmmm.

Wired.com have an interesting story about the hacking of Creative Technology’s MuVo2 MP3 player. Apparently the MuVo2 contains a 4Gb Hitachi MicroDrive, which normally retails for around $500. The MuVo2 only costs $200 (how much markup are Hitachi making on the stand-alone drive?!) so photographers have been buying the MuVo2 and removing the MicroDrive to use in their digital cameras. Not surprisingly the MuVo2 is said to be in short supply at the moment…
“The Hitachi microdrive is the same size as a standard CompactFlash, or CF, card, a popular storage medium for digital cameras. In fact, the drive is designed to be interchangeable with CF cards. The drive can simply be inserted into the camera and formatted to store pictures. The drive can also be read with most CF card readers.”
If you’re interested in this hack then andymack.com has a step-by-step guide…
Thanks to Stephen Anstey for sending me the links :-)
UPDATED 08/03/04: Photo.net have also added a step-by-step guide to dismantling the MuVo 2.

Imaging Resource have published their review of the tiny Canon PowerShot SD10 (also known as the Digital IXUS i in some countries). The SD10 has a street price of $349 in the USA and £299 in the UK.
“The Canon ELPH series of digicams continues to be a popular option for many consumers, given its tiny size and reputation for great quality. The PowerShot SD10 Digital ELPH shrinks the line even further, taking advantage of that small SD memory card image storage, and sports a near-4-megapixel CCD for high resolution images. Although exposure control is mainly automatic, the availability of exposures up to 15 seconds and adjustable ISO increases the camera’s exposure versatility a great deal.”

Imaging Resource Resource have posted their review of the Nikon Coolpix 3700 digital camera. The Coolpix 3700 has a very different design from previous Coolpix models, with a brushed aluminium body that’s both slim and lightweight. The 3.2 megapixel 3700 features a 3x optical zoom that is equivalent to 35-105mm lens on a 35mm camera.
“The 3700’s small, compact design makes it a good candidate for travel, as the camera fits easily into a shirt pocket or small purse. The retractable lens design keeps the camera body smooth and low-profile, perfect for pockets, and the silver, metal body is fashionably chic as well as rugged. With the convenience of automatic exposure control and extensive preset shooting modes, the 3700 is perfect for novices and amateurs looking for great pictures and hassle-free camera operation, but has enough capability to handle a variety of shooting conditions.”

Charlotte K. Lowrie of MSN Photos has just posted a very detailed review of the new DSLR from Kodak, the 14 megapixel DCS Pro SLR/n.
“A year ago, I recommended buying the 14n for specific genres of photography and with caveats. This year I recommend the SLR/n as a serious contender for professionals in all categories except photojournalism, sports, and low-light/fast-action (paparazzi!) categories. I make these exceptions because the camera is not weather resistant nor is it the speediest model on the lot.”
