I’ve resolved to get and about and photograph what could be perceived as Paris cliches for myself. The Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, they’ve all been photographed before, thousands of times, right? That thought alone has stopped me from attempting to capture them on film (well, digital). But something that I said on last week’s radio-show has made me think again - “photography is all about your own personal vision”. So it was that yesterday I spent a happy 5 hours or so wandering around the backstreets near the Louvre and Grand Palais, watching the last golden light of the day, before heading across the Seine for some night-shots of the river and the Musee D’Orsay. Just what the doctor ordered for a photographer suffering from stage-fright and photographer’s block, and just what I promised myself I would be regularly doing when we first dreamed of coming to Paris all those many months ago.

I haven’t posted too many of my own pictures lately - been experiencing a little photographer’s block here in Paris. But an inspirational Christmas present (The Great LIFE Photographers, 600 pages read on Christmas Day) and a visit to the Robert Capa exhibition today at the Bibliotheque nationale de france have hopefully made me turn a corner. I have been taking some photos, just not as many or with the quality that I would have liked. This is one of the ones that I am pleased with - taken in the Samaritaine restaurant on the 5th floor, looking out over the Seine, against the light, with my Canon G3 resting on the table. I was also slightly drunk at the time after one too many lunchtime aperitifs - maybe this is a tactic that I could adopt for the future? (not that I’m advocating alcohol you understand…).

A visit to the Louvre yesterday provided plenty of opportunities for classic shots of well-known scenes. Instead I tried to find a more unique angle and avoid the kind of pictures that 1,000’s of tourists were taking around me.

Bonjour!
After what seems like days of packing, cleaning, unpacking, driving and trying to get a wireless internet connection to work, I’ve finally made it to Paris and am now back online :-) I’ve relocated to Paris from London for at least the next year - the photo above was taken yesterday morning from the apartment’s balcony.

Modern buildings and reflections are two of my favourite photographic subjects - being able to put them together and combine both in one shot is even better. The building that occupies the address “5 London Bridge Street” lends itself well to an abstract approach.

This is the final image in my London seaside trilogy - you can view the first shot here, and the second one here. I think this photo best captures the sandy beach, but it lacks the famous landmarks that the other two images have and therefore loses its sense of place.

It’s been sweltering hot here in London this weekend (although somewhat inevitably a storm is supposed to be on the way…). A few people and a dog were making the most of the summer sun by pretending that this thin strip of sand and pebbles by the Thames was a proper grown-up beach. In the background are some of London’s most famous landmarks, including St. Pauls. The contrast between the built-up skyline and the sandy beach is what I was trying to achieve in this shot.

The Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM macro lens is a wonderful tool in the right hands, and macro photography itself can often be very emotive. I don’t really use the lens or try macro photography very often, but at the weekend we visited my girlfriend’s parents, whose garden at this time of year is full of brightly coloured flowers. I’ve also started to use a Photoshop plugin called ColorWasher (full review coming soon), which makes it easier to achieve more accurate, punchier images than using Photoshop alone. So these 3 images are the combination of a great lens, vibrant subject matter, ColorWasher, and last but not least, my roving photographer’s eye :-)

Every year in London, various buildings open their doors to the public, so that we, the great unwashed, can have a good nose around places like the Lloyds Building in the heart of the financial district. Most of the photos that you see of this famous landmark are night shots of the illuminated exterior, so these interior shots are perhaps a little more unusual. Although the throngs of photographers that were also there probably took identical shots to me! As an interesting aside, it seems that digital photography doesn’t always have a quick turnaround, as these photos were taken last year. Or maybe it’s me that doesn’t have a quick turnaround…

I was checking back through the relatively few photos that I’ve taken recently and discovered these shots of the Royal Horse Guards, complete with the Queen and Prince Phillip, taken last month. I’m not quite sure why I didn’t post them at the time, but here they are anyway, with more to follow tomorrow.

My Dad’s a keen gardener, growing both flowers and vegetables that put the tasteless supermarket varieties to shame (probably because of all the horse-dung that he’s spread on the ground over the years!). His garden also turns out to be a good place to take photographs - these shots were all taken in a quick 30 minute session, accompanied by shouts of “What on earth are you doing now?” from my onlooking family.

A recent visit to Birmingham produced these shots of what must by now be something of a photographic cliche. The Bullring Centre was recently pulled down and rebuilt in this outlandish, space-age style, and has quickly become one of the most photographed buildings in the Midlands, if not England. Black and white seemed to suit the building better than the original colour images.
