Nikon USA have announced prices for the new professional D2H DSLR and associated accessories. The D2H body only will retail for $3,999.00 - Imaging Resource has posted the complete price list.

Meanwhile, Imaging Resource have removed the sample images that they posted at the weekend. Apparently the cameras that they were given to use by Nikon USA were very early pre-production samples and therefore not at all indicative of the final finished product.

“While I and the other journalists attending Nikon’s “Gravity Games” event were told that the cameras we were shooting with were “very close” to final production, I have since been informed that they were in fact much earlier-stage prototypes than we were initially told. Accordingly, Nikon has asked that I remove the images previously posted here until such time as final production-level units are available to test.

Apologies for the confusion over this, it appears that Nikon US was as much surprised by this as all of us are.”

Rob Galbraith’s website is reporting that Canan Canada have recently reduced the prices of several digital SLR cameras, “L” series lenses, teleconvertors and the 550ex Speedlite flash unit. The EOS 10D, EOS-1D and EOS-1Ds have all dropped in price by several hundred dollars. No similar price decreases have (yet?) been announced in the USA or the UK. Let me know if Canon have made a similar announcement in your part of the world…

Well, at least if you live in the USA, anyway. The first post features the usual cat photos that all new digital camera owners seem to take :-) I’m awaiting the first “My 300D doesn’t focus properly” thread with baited breath…

As part of their interactive preview of the new Olympus E-1 DSLR, DP-Now have just posted 7 sample images taken with a pre-production unit at a variety of different ISO speeds.

“A Zip archive of seven original E-1 images taken by me is now available for download.
The archive is 23MB and will take at least an hour to download using a typical dial-up connection, though rather more quickly over a broadband connection.
If the bandwidth hit is excessive, I can’t guarantee the download will remain available.

Toshiba have announded their most advanced digital camera to date. The PDR-5300 boasts a 5 megapixel CCD sensor, 3X optical zoom lens (equivalent to a 35mm to 105mm 35mm zoom lens) and a stainless-steel body.

”?The PDR-5300 accommodates different types of users and levels of skill, from the discerning photographer requiring total manual control over shooting functions to the weekend digicam enthusiast who wants a high-performing, easy-to-use camera to capture special moments,? said Doug Freck, Vice President/General Manager, Toshiba Imaging Systems.”

The PDR-5300 has an RRP of $399 and will ship later this month.

The camera is not even on sale yet, but Short Courses have still been able to publish a new 120 page guide to the Canon EOS 300D/Rebel. The printed version costs $24.95, or you can get an e-book version for $19.95.

Following on from yesterday when digitalreview.ca published 3 sample images from the Nikon D2H digital SLR, Imaging Resource have joined in and posted around 24 new sample photos. There are also some erly observations about how this new DSLR handles.

“The one fly in the ointment, at least in terms of the sample photos I’ve posted, is that the prototype cameras I and several others were playing seemed to have very high image noise levels, particularly in shadow areas. This came as quite a surprise, since Nikon made a particular point of the low-noise characteristics of their new proprietary LBCAST sensor technology.”

Digital Outback Photo are currently testing the Canon EOS 300D with the EF-S 18-55mm lens. They have started to publish their review in the form of a diary, so make sure to check back for their latest thoughts.

“In terms of the camera features the Rebel is very basic and looks cheap (e.g. silver body). But handling and build quality is much better than this might sound. You cannot save weight, size and money and still expect a professional camera. We will actually buy a 300D as a backup camera.”

DP-Now have started an interactive preview of the new Olympus E-1 DSLR. The preview takes a look first at the Four Thirds system and its perceived advantages and disadvantages.

The UK digital photogrphy website ePhotoZine have quietly published a full review of the Pentax *ist D, which is due to hit the high street very soon. Can the new *ist D compete with the more well-established DSLRs like the Canon EOS 10D, Fuji S2 and Nikon D100? Find out in ePhotoZine’s review…

“Overall the Pentax *ist D offers a level of image quality similar to other six megapixel digital SLRs available, which is good considering this is Pentax’s first production Digital SLR to reach the market. We received the camera with the kit 18-35mm lens and used a 24-90mm we had in the office too. The 18-35mm provides a useful wide-angle and for around ?100 extra over the body-only price is not bad value. In comparison to the 24-90mm it is slightly softer at 24mm but does provide that 6mm more wide-angle coverage. One advantage it has over most other wide-angle lenses is it is very lightweight making the combination of this lens and the *ist D a good travel companion.”

Kyocera Japan have announced the Finecam SL300R, which features a swivelling design very much like that of the Nikon Coolpix series of cameras. The SL300R has a 1/2.7” CCD with 3.17 Megapixels and will be available in no less than 8 different colours. The lens is a 3x optical zoom with a focal length that is equivalent to 38-115mm on a 35mm camera.

The Finecam SL300R will be available in Japan from the beginning of October. There is no news yet about price or availability in the rest of the world.

digitalreview.ca have published 3 sample images from a pre-production version of the Nikon D2H digital SLR. The images, all taken at ISO 200, were provided by Nikon and are from a camera with “almost final” firmware.

Steves Digicams have reviewed the Fuji FinePix A310, which uses Fujifilm’s new 4th Generation Super CCD HR with 3.1 million effective pixels and 6.0 million recorded pixels. The Fuji FinePix A310 currently retails for around $250 / ?250.

“A unique feature for a camera in this class is the A310’s ability to produce interpolated 6-megapixel images from a 3-megapixel image sensor. Comparing equally-sized enlargements of segments from 3 and a 6-megapixel interpolated images, the interpolated image showed only minor degradation. This feature will be of most value to those desiring to make poster-size prints.”

Steves Digicams is the first website to review the Casio QV-R40, a 4 megapixel digicam which has an amazing start-up time of one second and shutter-lag of 0.01 seconds. The Casio QV-R40 currently retails for around $300 / ?300.

“The QV-R40, like its predecessor the QV-R4, is equipped with several unique and effective shooting modes. For example, the Coupling Shot mode combines 2 subjects into 1 image. Imagine you’re with your spouse or friend and want to take a shot of the two of you and there’s nobody else around to help you. One of you poses, the other takes the shot. Then you switch places and stand where you would if you had been next to your partner and she takes a second shot; the two pictures are then “merged” in the camera to form one image.”

Steves Digicams has reviewed the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC43, a 4-megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom lens from none other than Leica. The DMC-LC43 currently retails for around $399 / ?300.

“Image quality relies heavily on the lens, and the Leica Vario-Elmarit does not disappoint. It produces very sharp images, and exhibits only a slight amount of pincushion distortion. The autofocus system works effectively, nicely complementing the quality of the lens. The imager produces vibrant and accurate colors. I originally reported this news way back in June, when Konica first announced the KD-510Z, a new 5-megapixel digital camera. It seems to taken another 3 months for the camera to finally make its way onto the UK high street. Anyway, ePhotoZine have just published the Konica press release and technical specifications.

The people running the Slovenian digital photography website e-Fotografija must spend most of their waking hours testing cameras, as yesterday they published their review of the Fuji FinePix S5000. The S5000 uses Fuji’s 4th Generation Super CCD HR and sports a massive 10X optical zoom that is equivalent to equivalent to 37-370mm on a 35mm camera. Again e-Fotografija have posted quite a few sample images with 100% crops so that you can see the detail that the camera is recording.
