Nikon today officially unveiled its latest flagship digital SLR camera. The Nikon D5 - whose development was announced back in November - has a 20.8-megapixel FX sensor, a 153-point AF module with 99 cross-hatched focus sensors, a maximum shooting speed of 14fps at full resolution (12fps with AF), as well as 4K movie recording capabilities. The extended buffer lets users shoot for up to 200 frames of 14-bit lossless RAW/NEF files + JPG fine when using approved XQD cards. Of the 153 focus points, 55 AF are directly selectable by the photographer. This all-new AF module is coupled with a new 180K pixel RGB metering sensor and Advanced Scene Recognition System, helping users achieve optimally balanced exposures and accurate white balance in even the most challenging light. The camera has a "native" sensitivity range of ISO 100-102,400 (expandable to an unprecedented ISO 3,280,000),a built-in 1000 Base-T 400MBps Ethernet connection port and a 3.2”, 2359K-dot touch-sensitive rear screen. The Nikon D5 DSLR will be available in March for a suggested retail price of £5,199.99/€6,989.00/$6,499.95 in two different versions, with either dual XQD card slots or dual CF card slots.

The 20.9-megapixel Nikon D500 is a new DX-format semi-professional DSLR camera with a 153-point AF module (including 99 cross-type sensors), 10fps continuous shooting for up to 200 raw images, and "always on" Bluetooth LE technology for seamless smartphone connectivity. Successor to the D300S, the new model uses the latest version of the SnapBridge app, and features a tiltable 3.2" touchscreen with a resolution of 2,359K dots. The sensor offers a native sensitivtity range of ISO 100-51,200; expandable to 1,640,000. Images can be saved on either a fast XQD card or an additional SD card for maximum workflow efficiency. Like the also-new Nikon D5, the Nikon D500 is capable of recording 4K video at a variety of frame rates including 24, 25 and 30fps. The camera is compatible with the separately sold MB-D17 Multi-Power Battery Pack, which can be used with various types of battery. The Nikon D500 APS-C digital SLR camera will be available in March 2016 for $1999.95 (body only) and $3069.95 (in a kit with the AF-S DX Nikkor 16-80mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR lens).

Nikon today officially revealed its SB-5000 Speedlight, whose development was first announced back in November. The SB-5000 is the first Nikon flashgun to be equipped with a radio-controlled Advanced Wireless Lighting function (with a communication range of up to ~30m), and is also equipped with a cooling system that enables more than 100 continuous full-power flashes. Radio control makes wireless multiple flash photography easier in situations where conventional optical (infrared) control is difficult, such as when remote flash units are positioned behind objects or at greater distances, or when ambient lighting is very bright. The tilt-swivel flash head can be zoomed to match the angle-of-view rage of a 24-200mm lens. The guide number is 34.5 (in metres at ISO 100) in FX format and 41 in DX format, at the 35mm zoom head position. The Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight will be available in March for the SRP of £499.99/€659.00/$599.95.

Nikon today announced the development of a new range of action cameras. The first in the lineup will be the Nikon KeyMission 360 a rugged camera capable of recording true 360-degree video in 4K resolution. The Nikon KeyMission 360 features an image sensor and lens on opposite sides of the device, with images from each combining to create a single immersive, ultra-high-definition 360-degree video and still image. Waterproof to 100 ft/30m, and ready to stand up to dust, shock and low temperatures, the KeyMission 360 also features electronic Vibration Reduction. Nikon will exhibit reference models of the KeyMission 360 at the Nikon booth at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) from Wednesday to Saturday in Las Vegas. The KeyMission 360, along with a variety of dedicated accessories, will officially be released in Spring 2016.

The Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm F4.0-6.3 ASPH. is a 200-800mm equivalent lens featuring Power Optical Image Stabilisation (O.I.S.) and an optical formula comprising 20 elements in 13 groups plus an iris diaphragm with 9 rounded blades. The Panasonic Lumix TZ100 is, a premium compact travel camera with a 1"-type sensor, 4K video capture and a 25-250mm lens. This camera is the first in the Lumix TZ series to incorporate an f/2.8-5.9 Leica DC lens with 10x optical zoom and hybrid O.I.S. Another new addition to the range is the Post-Focus feature, which allows you to choose the focal point of any picture, even after it’s taken. The Lumix TZ100’s 0.1s Light Speed Auto Focus and Depth from Defocus capability combine to calculate the distance between the camera and the subject, capturing optimal focus for 49 individual areas within each frame. The Live View Finder (LVF) features 1,166K-dot resolution, as well as LVF AF that detects when you’re about to take a shot. The camera also provides extensive manual controls including dedicated physical rings and dials for settings such as zoom, aperture, shutter speed, manual focus and sensitivity settings. Combining WiFi and QR code connectivity, it is easy to connect the camera to a smartphone or tablet.

The Panasonic Lumix TZ80 is an 18-megapixel travelzoom camera featuring an 1/2.3" MOS sensor, 4K movie capture and a Leica branded 24-720mm equivalent lens with optical image stabilisation. For the first time in a travel camera, Panasonic’s 4K Photo function allows you to extract an 8-megapixel still from 4K video. Another new addition to the LUMIX TZ range is the Post-Focus feature, which allows you to select the focal point of your picture even after it’s taken. A dedicated control ring gives smooth control of settings such as zoom, aperture and shutter speed. Similarly, a 3.0-inch 1040k-dot touch screen makes navigating menus and selecting your preferred setting quick and easy, even in bright sunlight, the company says. In addition to the rear screen, the Panasonic Lumix TZ80 boasts a built-in 0.2" electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 1,166k dots.

Canon has refreshed its ultrazoom camera lineup with two new models.

The Canon PowerShot SX420 IS features an improved 42x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 24-1008mm) and Optical Image Stabiliser, a 3" rear screen and a 20-megapixel sensor. A dedicated Wi-Fi button allows for easy sharing and transferring of images over Wi-Fi and NFC technology. Videos are captured in 720p resolution. The Canon PowerShot SX420 IS is scheduled to be available in February 2016 for an estimated retail price of $299.99.

The Canon PowerShot SX540 HS (pictured) has a powerful 50x optical zoom (equivalent to 24-1200mm) with Optical Image Stabiliser, a new 20.3-megapixel CMOS sensor with a DIGIC 6 imaging chip and a dedicated Wi-Fi button. Users can easily record 1080p Full HD video at an improved rate of up to 60fps in MP4 format with stereo sound. Its Hybrid Auto mode records quick video clips before each still and compiles them together to make a short highlight reel. The Canon PowerShot SX540 HS is scheduled to be available in March 2016 for an estimated retail price of $399.99.

Nikon have announced two new consumer-grade standard zooms for their digital SLR cameras featuring DX sized sensors. The AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G and AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR utilise stepping motors to drive AF for fast and quiet focusing, and boast a retractable-barrel design for enhanced portability. When shooting video footage, the stepping motor allows you to smoothly shift focus from subject to subject with practically no drive noise. These are also the first Nikon lenses to allow users to switch between auto and manual focus using the camera menu (when used on a Nikon D3300, D5300 or D5500 with the latest firmware installed). Each lens incorporates 2 aspherical glass elements to correct various types of aberration, and the VR version additionally offers up to four stops of vibration reduction. The VR function can also be turned on or off using the menu on compatible camera models. The Nikon AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G standard zoom will be available next month, priced at £149.99/€199.00. The AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR will retail for £199.99/€259.00.

At the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Canon U.S.A. will challenge attendees to "see the impossible" at booth #13106 in the Central Hall. The booth will feature a Canon 8K Ride Experience where attendees can experience, firsthand, the physical and emotional reactions that take place when an 8K video projected on a large screen simulates a physical journey. There will also be an 8K Photo Gallery that displays precise moments from an 8K video. At the booth’s center, attendees can navigate up the Canon Lens Tower, which showcases large and long-zoom lenses from Canon’s line of more than 103 Canon EF Series lenses as well as Canon’s innovative CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm lens capable of shooting brilliant 4K video at up to 1500mm with its built-in 1.5x extender. The tower will offer a unique and innovative 360 degree visual perspective of the CES show floor. Kenko Tokina have officially announced the availability of their AT-X14-20mm F2 PRO DX lens for digital SLR cameras with APS-C sized sensors. Featuring a constant maximum aperture of f/2, this brand new wide zoom is equivalent to a 21-30mm lens in 35mm terms. The optical formula comprises 13 lens elements in 11 groups including 2 super-low-dispersion aspherical glass elements. Tokina’s exclusive One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between AF/MF simply by sliding the focus ring, while the 9 bladed near-circular aperture diaphragm allows for a natural bokeh rendering - especially when the lens is set to its minimum focus distance of 28cm. The Tokina AT-X PRO SD 14-20mm F2 (IF) DX wide zoom has an 82mm filter thread, weighs in at 725 grams, and comes in Canon & Nikon fit. The Canon variant is scheduled to be available in February, with the Nikon version coming in March. In Japan, the price of the lens will be around 130,000 yen (£730/$1080).
