Canon’s latest professional digital SLR camera, the EOS-1D Mark IV, was used by pro photographers to shoot Super Bowl XLIV. “Shooting at Super Bowl XLIV with the EOS-1D Mark IV was a night-and-day improvement compared to previous EOS models. It blew them all away. The 1D Mark IV exceeded my expectations quite a bit,” said Daniel Powers, staff photographer, Gannett Co., Inc. “The autofocus and tracking are razor sharp. Joby will unveil two new products at PMA 2010, including the Gorillapod Magnetic flexible tripod (see picture above) and the Ballhead X for Gorillapod Focus. Hasselblad invites photographers to submit photographs to be considered for the 10th annual Masters Awards. Each year Hasselblad awards the title of Master photographers in a range of specially defined categories. Photographers are invited to submit up to 5 images in each of the following eleven categories: architecture, editorial, fashion/beauty, fine art, general photography, nature/landscape, portrait, product, up-and-coming, wedding/social and, for the first time, wildlife. Awards are granted in recognition of the photographer’s contribution to the art of photography and photographic ability in the areas of creativity, composition, conceptual strength, and technical skill. Submission criteria are strict: with the exception of the up-and-coming category, submitting photographers must have been active professionals for more than three years and submitted images must be captured with a medium or large format system. The up-and-coming category is open to all active professional photographers, regardless of length of time in the business, and submitted images may be captured with any large format, medium format, or 35mm digital system.

HP today introduced a range of five point-and-shoot digital cameras and three camcorders. The premium HP CW450t ($109) and HP PW460t ($149) point-and-shoot digital cameras feature 2.7-inch and 3-inch LCD touchscreen displays, respectively, and a newly designed touch interface for viewing photos with the simple swipe of a finger. Both have 4X optical zoom and support SDHC memory cards. With a lithium-ion battery making it slim enough to fit easily into a shirt pocket, the HP SW450 ($129) features a 2.7-inch LCD display and 4X optical zoom. The HP PW550z ($149) features a 5X wide zoom lens, and comes in a choice of black or plum.

Fujifilm has announced the development of the new “3D Print System” which achieves high-quality and natural 3D print captured with a 3D digital camera. This new system, the printer and a PC, is claimed to be ideal for on-location 3D photography at tourist spots, theme parks, events, and other locations that offer photo printing services on site because it is easy to set up and requires small foot print. Featuring Fujifilm’s “Image Intelligencee” technology, the system employs a printing method that uses thermal sublimation to transfer images directly onto lenticular sheets to create a 3D effect. Prints will be available in four different types from 4x6 inches (10.2 x 15.2cm) to 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9cm). This new 3D Print System is scheduled to be available from 2nd Quarter of 2010.

American Rivers announced today that it will be the beneficiary of donations through a photo contest sponsored by Orvis. The contest encourages people to submit their favorite fishing or river-related photo. Photos can depict a range of subjects, including rivers and landscapes, anglers, wildlife, and more. The winning photograph will appear on the cover of a future Orvis fly fishing catalog and the winning photographer will receive a $1,000 Orvis gift card or a Helios fly rod outfit. Dalsa has just announced the shipment of its newest image sensors, which offer a resolution of 196 megapixels. Of course, you will not find these in the next-generation digital SLR cameras - not that their lenses would be able to resolve that much information anyway -; but if you happen to be in the aerial photogrammetry business, it might be just what you need. For the 196-megapixel Dalsa sensors will be used in the newest models in the UltraCam line of aerial photogrammetry cameras produced by Vexcel Imaging GmbH, a subsidiary of Microsoft. The new UltraCamXp and UltraCamXp Wide Angle use multiple Dalsa CCD image sensors to provide breathtakingly detailed imagery that feeds applications such as Microsoft Bing Maps.

The range-topping S-Frame X85 and X95 feature TruBlack technology for rich, high-contrast images and low screen reflections. The Sony S-Frame X85 & X95 frames couple a 8:5 aspect ratio and WVGA resolution with 8” and 9” panel sizes, respectively. Both models feature 2GB internal memory and Memory Stick, SD and xD-Picture card slots.
