The flagship Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS admittedly looks a little expensive compared against its 8 megapixel rivals, some of which are more than �100 cheaper, but it doesn't seem to have halted Canon's inexorable rise to number one market status. Certainly you're paying extra for the solid feel and all metal built here, but if your wallet is deep enough you'll find the IXUS 950 IS a reliable performer under most circumstances. Images delivered are colourful and sharp straight out of the camera, requiring little if any post processing which is a blessing for the point-and-shoot brigade, while the back screen is clear enough to be able to compose images in sunshine without recourse to the alternative optical viewfinder. Indeed I quickly forgot the viewfinder was even there, so small and murky the view through it. Arguably, apart from the boost in pixels, there's not a great deal to make a song and dance about with the Canon Digital IXUS 950 IS � so unless you're looking to make poster-sized prints with any regularity, stick with the 800. For those who don't already own an IXUS but are seduced by its enticingly curvaceous lines and sophisticated finish, the IXUS 950 IS is as good a place as any to get introduced to the family.
