The Canon EOS 400D announcement seemed to be very understated compared to the raft of other 10 megapixel DSLRs announced this year. Most of the headlines seemed to have been grabbed by the Sony A100 and the Nikon D80, with Canon looking as though they almost missed the boat with their later product launch. However, Canon are not afraid to let people know that the EOS 300D and 350D are some of the best selling DSLRs of all time and they have built up a massive following that they aim to reinforce with their latest model. The 400D certainly has the bottle to take on its competitors with its 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor but it does not set the standards and stand out from the crowd anymore. It is not the cheapest or the most expensive model on the market and it is not even the smallest DSLR available, as the Olympus E400 takes that crown. Canon have done exactly what they had to do with their latest entry-level DSLR by adding new features like their EOS Integrated Cleaning System and the larger 2.5-inch LCD screen. There is no doubt that this camera will sell by the bucket-loads and any consumer wanting to take their first step into DSLR ownership won't go far wrong with this DSLR, but while the 400D offers a good all round performance, it is no longer top of the class.
