Would the world be any poorer without the existence of the Canon PowerShot A590 IS? Since it offers little that's revolutionary, the answer is: 'very probably not'. However, it's cutely styled if overall a bit business-like, inoffensive in operation and to use a well-worn adage, the A590 IS 'does exactly what it says on the tin'. Also, for a model aimed at beginners, features are surprisingly comprehensive, its response times save for that rather sluggish zoom pretty good, and it's nice to see true optical image stabilisation included as standard on a camera that costs what it does. The mainly plastic build is well disguised by a more professional looking finish overall, while, once batteries and card are inserted, the whole thing feels reassuringly solid and robust. The Canon PowerShot A590 IS is the sort of camera you could entrust the kids with, with the dial twisted around to 'Easy' mode for convenience. So, in summing up, the A590 IS might well not inspire you to leap photographic boundaries, but does offer a tad more than the average point and shoot, allowing room for growth once you've got bored with pure snapshot photography. And 160 won't break the bank if you're looking for a mostly reliable, good value pocket camera for this summer's holiday.
