Conclusion

4.5 stars
(out of 5 stars)

The HP Photosmart 8450 is a very easy to use and well-made 8-colour inkjet printer that delivers great image quality, producing fantastic colour and black and white prints straight out of the box. HP's ICC profiles seem to be extremely accurate - there is no need to spend endless amounts of time or money on profiling to obtain accurate prints with the HP Photosmart 8450 (at least on HP's own range of papers). If you have always struggled with black and white printing in particular, then the Photosmart 8450 will be a breath of fresh air. This is the one of the first inkjet printers to produce truly neutral black and white prints using the supplied inkset - most other inkjets introduce some kind of unwanted colour cast. If you also want a printer that does not require a computer to operate and can connect to a variety of devices in a variety of ways, then that is even more reason to consider the HP Photosmart 8450. The only thing that stops me giving the HP Photosmart 8450 a full 5 out of 5 rating is a new printer that was announced at the PMA photography trade show a few weeks ago - the larger format HP Photosmart 8750. This new model promises to deliver the same image quality as the 8450 in a larger size (up to 13x19 inches / A3) for less than £400 / $500. If you don't need to make such large prints. however, then I can strongly recommend the HP Photosmart 8450.
