Sample JPEG Images
This is a selection of sample images from the Nikon D90 camera, which were all taken using the 12 megapixel Large / Fine JPEG setting with sharpness at the default level, using the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR kit lens. The thumbnails below link to the full-sized versions, which have not been altered in any way.
Sample RAW Images
The Nikon D90 enables users to capture RAW and JPEG format files. We've provided some Nikon RAW (NEF) samples for you to download (thumbnail images shown below are not 100% representative).
Sample Movie
The Nikon D90 is the first SLR in the world to capture video. It does so at 1280x720 pixels and 24fps, and stores it in AVI format using the motion JPEG codec. The quality of the clips I took with the D90 was a mixed bag: the resolution was undoubtedly there, and the frame rate was sufficient for a smooth movie experience, but repeating patterns of high-frequency detail caused colour moir to appear, and jagged diagonals were also a common occurrence, as seen in our first sample video. Given that neither of the above problems surfaced in the still photographs taken with the camera, I assume that their appearance in the movie clips might be attributable to the sub-sampling algorithm used. The so-called rolling shutter of the CMOS sensor can cause other quality issues, which may manifest themselves, for example, in verticals that appear skewed or circles that look like distorted ovals. If you refrain from fast pans and attempts to capture rapidly moving subjects, these latter problems can be largely avoided.
This is a sample movie at the highest quality setting of 1280x720 at 24 frames per second. Please note that this 28 second movie is 46Mb in size.
This is a sample movie which shows the effects of shifting the focus and closing down the aperture during filming. Please note that this 15 second movie is 26Mb in size.
