Flex Lens Shade Review

Conclusion
The idea behind the Flex Lens Shade is sound. It's a solution to a problem that a lot of photographers have - especially in the sports/events discipline. The lightweight construction adds nothing to the kit that will already be very heavy thanks to a high end DSLR and massive telephoto lens. This Shade will cut out flare from the sodium or halogen lights that the venue will be using, let alone flash guns of other photographers. With telephoto lenses, you won't have a problem from vignetting but we got it a bit on a 50mm prime lens.
The build quality is good and we can see the amount of time and effort that has gone into producing it. We expected it to be more malleable and more firm once it was put in position. Maybe that's one for R&D on the next version.
Looking at the issue that it's designed to solve, the Lens Shade cuts flare from all but absolutely direct light. The velcro is strong and the fact that it has that strap means it can be used on any lens of any size that a sports/event photographer may have. Time to throw away all those petal hoods you've been collecting.
We didn't manage to give it a long term test over 6 months or a year and we're unclear about the wearing properties of the materials used. They certainly feel strong and only time will tell if they stay that way. Saying that, even if it does fade over time, it will take a number of years so you'll get your money's worth. For the price, the Flex Lens Shade is a nice little addition to the camera bag and if you're a sports photographer battling with over head lighting and side flashes from other photographers, you'll find this product interesting.
