Conclusion

The AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR is Nikon's newest professional telephoto lens for full-frame DSLR users, offering better image quality, improved build, faster focusing, and a more versatile vibration reduction system. It is more expensive than its predecessor on launch, though, and the jury's still out on the reversed position of the zoom and focus rings, but overall this is Nikon's best ever 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. 

Sharpness is excellent at most focal lengths and f-stops. Edge sharpness is also commendably excellent, only requiring stopping-down to f/5.6 to get great results at all the focal lengths. Distortion is well-controlled, chromatic aberrations are only really conspicuous by their almost complete absence, and the lens exhibits pleasingly rounded bokeh thanks to the 9-blade aperture. Overall, the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR delivers excellent results throughout its zoom and aperture range.

In summary, Nikon have taken an already great lens and made it even better. The AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR is a corker of a lens in almost all areas, with only the price causing real concern. We even grew to like the new placement of the zoom and focus rings. While AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II users might not rush to upgrade, if you're in the market for a professional 70-200mm lens, this is the one to get.
