If you like small and light, have a limited budget, and need the reach of a 400mm telephoto zoom, the new Sigma is your best choice: it is the cheapest, smallest and lightest modern zoom reaching 400mm plus it's sharp and has only minor color aberrations. Its biggest let-down is the missing tripod collar and most importantly the disappointing OS performance: it is not very effective around 1/100 sec and 1/50 sec which is a critical range of shutter speeds for such a lens. But all-in-all the Sigma 100-400/5-6.3 OS certainly earns a recommendation.

On 21 of February 2017 the Japanese Sigma company launched as many as four new lenses. These were: the Sigma A 14 mm f/1.8 DG HSM, the Sigma A 24–70 mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM, the Sigma A 135 mm f/1.8 DG HSM and the Sigma C 100–400 mm f/5–6.3 DG OS HSM. The 135 mm model hit the shelves as the first and we’ve already tested it; then the telephoto Sigma C 100–400 mm f/5–6.3 DG OS HSM was released on the market. The idea behind that lens was to create a device not much bigger than popular, amateur 70-300 mm instruments but with a possibility of using longer focal lengths and obtaining images of better quality. We were very curious about the result so immediately after the first specimen of that lens had become available in Poland we set about testing it.

Sigma has a long history of designing and manufacturing long focal length telephoto zoom lenses, so we should not be surprised to see this one hit the streets. However, this lens is likely to garner more attention than many of the predecessors. The 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens is Sigma's first "Global Vision" entry featuring this approximate focal length range and most of the GV lenses have been very well received. That this lens is easily the smallest and lightest in its class warrants attention and that it is very-low-priced raises eyebrows. With great image quality from a feature-filled package, this lens warrants kit-addition consideration.
