CB Richard Ellis today launched its third annual Urban Photographer of the Year competition across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The competition is now open to entries online and entrants have until 31 January 2011 to submit their snapshots of urban life. The full list of winners, including the overall Urban Photographer of the Year 2010, will be announced in March 2011. The first prize for the 2010 CBRE Urban Photographer of the Year Award is a photography safari for two to Turkey, and will give the winner the opportunity to photograph some of the world’s finest locations of ancient and modern history. Past winners have drawn inspiration from a vast spectrum of city sights, from London commuters, to gondoliers enjoying a well-earned break in Venice, an urban desert storm in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to a city fireworks display in Budapest, Hungary.

Their new ‘Search For Great Photography Competition’ offers entrants a chance to win either a ColorMunki (pictured) or a stylish Boa Flow backpack. You can enter by submitting your photography in one of the following four categories: Colour, Black & White, Portraiture and Landscapes. The deadline for submissions is 5pm on 30th November 2010 and the judging panel will comprise design, colour management and business experts who will be looking for originality, creativity and innovation.

The Federation of European Photographers (FEP) has announced that the 2010 European Fine Art Photograph of the Year Award is open for entries. The competition will be judged by a panel of international judges with Fine Art Photographer Pascal Baetens, Master Qualified European Photographer, as chairman. There is just one main category in the compeition, each entrant may submit up to 3 pictures. The entry fee is €10 for each picture submitted by a photographer who is a member of a national association which is a member of the FEP or €20 for each picture submitted by all others. The submission deadline is 31 December 2010. The competition is open to all photographers.

The Nikon Foundation is a new student initiative by Nikon UK, which aims to support and celebrate emerging photographers as they complete their education and begin their careers. By submitting a portfolio of images and a covering letter, students are in with a chance of winning a 3-month internship with fashion and celebrity photographer John Wright and Nikon professional equipment worth £4000. Whilst the Nikon Foundation is ultimately a photography competition, the shortlisted 10 finalists will each be interviewed by the panel of judges, including John, after which one winner will be offered the position with John and his team. The competition will run from today until 31st March 2011, with the winners announced in April. The three month placement with John will commence in June 2011.

The International Press Association (IPA) has announced a unique photo contest to help launch their new Member Support Blog on their website. There are no fees to enter, no contributions to the contests favourite charities, no restrictions on the subject matter, two levels of entry - pro and amateur - and “so many prizes that the chances of winning are quite good”, the Association says. First place winners will receive over $1800 in prizes each, second place winners receive over $500 in prizes and ten Honourable Mention winners will receive over $150 in prizes each. The contest will be using the viewer votes (25%) and the judges’ votes (75%) to determine the final winners. The submission deadline is 30th November.

Fujifilm USA has launched the “Best Photo Book Promotion Ideas Ever” contest for professional photo-finishers. The aim of the contest is to share their unique, persuasive ideas for promoting photo books in order to drive trial. Whether the idea was already the centerpiece of a successful retail photo book promotion or a new idea that has not yet been promoted, all entries are encouraged. The contest runs through 31 October. One Grand Prize winner will receive a cash award of $2,500, the first and second place winners will each receive $1,000. The winners, as chosen by a panel of business and marketing experts, will be announced in early December.

The winners of the first Carl Zeiss Nano Image Contest have now been selected. First prize in the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) category was awarded to Heinrich Badenhorst with his image of a bizarre landscape made of graphite, captured with an ULTRA REM. With a total of 7000 points, his image received the most votes of all categories. Other category winners include Norman Hauke and Arne Laucht (category CrossBeam), Dr. Emile van Veldhoven (category Helium Ion Microscopy) and Dr. Andrey Burov in the category Transmission Electron Microscopy.

Judith Stenneken, a professional photographer from Berlin, Germany, was awarded the $25,000 Grand Prize in the third annual Photography Book Now competition for her photography book, “Last Call.” The book features pictures Ms. Stenneken captured at the historic Tempelhof Airport in Berlin between February and October 2008. The airport, which was an important lifeline for residents of West Berlin during the Cold War, shut its doors for the last time on 31 October 2008. “Ms. Stenneken’s work stood apart as this year’s Grand Prize winner,” said Darius Himes, lead judge, Photography Book Now. “Her photographs combine a rigorous, large-format camera aesthetic with a quieter sensibility.”

FotoWeek DC, the premier photography festival in Washington, DC, is reminding interested photographers that the submission deadline of the FotoWeek DC 2010 International Awards Competition is 20 September. Images are judged in 12 different categories, with cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each category. There is also the Spirit of Washington Award, which honours the photograph that best captures the essence of the US capital and includes a top prize of $5,000. The sixth annual Cowboys & Indians photography contest is now open for entries. There are five categories, including portrait, landscape, wildlife, action and equine. The subject of each photo - irrespective of which category it falls into - has to have something in common with cowboys, indians or the areas lying west of the Mississippi river. Five category winners will be selected, one for each category. The winning entry and runners-up will be published in the Cowboys & Indians 2011 Photo Essay issue. The 2011 Photo Contest winner will receive $1,000. The winners of each of the five categories will receive $500. The submission deadline is 14 October 2010. Canon USA has just launched this year’s “Why Do You Love Football” Photo Challenge. Fans of American football are invited to express their love for the sport through photography and submit their best youth football photos, which could earn the winning photographer a trip to Super Bowl XLV in North Texas. The contest is divided into two divisions, Adults ages 18 and over and Teens 13-17, and consists of two categories. The category Action focuses on any image that captures football action during game play and Feature comprises any football imagery outside of game action. The deadline for entries is 1st December 2010, and the challenge is open only to legal US residents.

Yobi.tv has launched a photography contest for residents of the US and all countries with diplomatic relations with the United States. The contest structure comprises 35 weekly rounds, organised into five sets of seven weeks each. During each weekly round, members will be able to vote for each eligible contest entry. At the end of each weekly round, the 3 entries with the most votes will proceed to a Semi-Final Round. After the seventh week of each weekly round set, a semi-final round will take place. Thus, there will be five semi-final rounds, with one semi-final round occurring after each of the five weekly round sets. Each semi-final round will last for one week and will feature the 21 semi-finalists chosen during the previous weekly round set. At the end of the semi-final round, the 3 contestants receiving the most votes will advance to the Final Rounds. The Grand Prize is $15,000. Medical Solutions has announced its first ever ‘Cutest Pet Photo Contest’ asking US healthcare professionals to submit photos of their beloved pets to be voted on by their friends, family and general public. The submission deadline is 12th September. Contestants can enter any number of pets and anyone can vote for as many photos as they like, however those voting can only vote once per photo. Entries are being judged on a five-star rating system and winners will be selected by a panel of judges at Medical Solutions who will choose the winning photos based on the number of votes, average rating and preference. Entrants are encouraged to share their pictures through as many social networking sites they may belong to in hopes of drawing more attention to their pictures.
