New Products from Kodak and Olympus Support the IMAGELINK Print System; Others Expected Over the Next Year

ROCHESTER, N. Y., Sept. 19—One year after the announcement of the IMAGELINK print system - a specification designed to simplify at-home picture printing - new cameras and printers supporting the standard are being released.  Joining a host of KODAK EASYSHARE cameras and printer docks already released this year, Olympus has announced the Camedia C315 zoom digital camera, the D555 zoom digital camera and ILP-100 printer dock which are all IMAGELINK compatible.

“Perhaps not surprising on a device at this price point, there’s no LCD monitor screen, but since the device includes a memory card reader – behind a spring-loaded, acrylic cover on the left – this can make life a bit awkward. You have two choices: you can print an index sheet and mark off the prints you want to reproduce from a card, or upload the images to your PC and select them from there. If your camera supports PictBridge, it’s a much better bet to select from the camera.”

We just wish the resulting photo print wasn’t slightly adhesive or gummy to the touch.”

“The ink jet–based Lexmark P315 ($100 street) is a little different from other dedicated photo printers. Like most, it focuses on the 4- by 6-inch photo format. And like many, it prints directly from PictBridge cameras and a wide choice of memory card formats. But don’t plan on using it to print photos from your computer or even for transferring photo files from a memory card to your hard drive. The P315 is strictly a camera accessory. It offers direct printing only, with no way even to connect to a computer.”

DCResource have cast their critical eye over the HP Photosmart 8250 photo printer, which features six individual ink cartridges and can print photos in just 14 seconds.

“While HP has ratcheted up the speed of its photo printing and finally separated its ink tanks by individual color, its photo quality has suffered slightly. Whereas the default prints from the HP 8150 were impressive (see our HP 8150 review), you’ll have to fiddle with the 8250’s settings to get best results. And you probably won’t want to print at the 8250’s fastest speeds—the quality isn’t great at all. Also, if you print a lot of black and white photos you may be disappointed with the bluish cast you’ll get from the 8250.”
