Photographic Magazine have reviewed the 8-colour Canon i9900 printer, which can create a 13 x 19-inch borderless photograph in under three minutes and has a maximum resolution of 4800 x 2400 dpi. The printer is available now for a suggested list price of $499.
“The i9900’s MicroFine Droplet Technology and 6144-nozzle printhead deposit 122 million two-picoliter droplets per second, and the high-speed printhead significantly increases throughput. In fact, borderless 4x6 prints take only about 40 seconds to generate, while 81/2x11 and 13x19 prints can be made as quickly as 50 and 180 seconds respectively. That’s really fast for a printer with a list price of $499.99.”

PCMagazine have published a shortish review of the Canon CP-330 Photo Printer:
“One minor issue is that unlike some of its competitors, which can print from memory cards, the CP-330 can print only from a camera or computer. We printed both ways on our tests, with consistent times of 1 minute 26 seconds to 1 minute 33 seconds. Output quality was just short of excellent, missing a perfect score primarily because of obvious aliasing in the bicycle spokes in one image, but this was a problem only when we were printing in borderless mode.”

FUJIFILM’S ONLINE SERVICE LETS DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHERS PRINT PICTURES ANYWHERE
5,000 Retail Locations “Live” With Fujifilm’s ‘Get The Picture Online Service’
Valhalla, NY, August 17, 2004 - Fuji Photo Film U.S.A., Inc., one of the world’s pioneering companies in the field of digital imaging products and services, today announced that more than 5,000 retail locations in the U.S. are now offering the company’s ‘Get the Picture Online Service’.
Launched in March 2003, the ‘Get the Picture Online Service’ uses Fujifilm’s extensive network of integrated Frontier Digital Lab Systems - which account for over 60% of all such systems installed nationally - to provide online ordering capabilities for consumers who can elect to pick up their prints from local stores or receive the prints by mail.
Through its diverse range of digital printing solutions, Fujifilm is constantly striving to make printing easy for consumers by giving them whatever option suits them best. For example, many digital photographers prefer to drop their pictures off (on disc or memory card) for printing at a retailer or photo lab offering Fujifilm printing services, while others print their pictures at home on Fujifilm’s range of advanced inkjet photo papers. Plus, as access to the Internet continues to grow, more and more consumers are discovering the Internet as an easy and convenient vehicle to upload their pictures for printing on Fujifilm’s long-lasting Crystal Archive photographic paper, and it is this group that Fujifilm’s ‘Get the Picture Online Service’ serves.

Luminous Landscape have reviewed a new inkjet paper from Epson, UltraSmooth Fine Art Paper, which unfortunately is only available in rolls and large sheet sizes suitable for use with Epson’s wide-format printers.
“After making a number of comparison prints on Ultrasmooth alongside Enhanced Matte, I must say that they look very similar. Ultrasmooth is slightly less white and has an ever so small amount of additional paper texture. I don’t see much of a difference in terms of black density, and colour saturation seems quite similar. The surface has a bit more tooth than Enhanced Matte and this means that it scuffs more easily. Prints on Ultrasmooth should have a sheet of tissue paper protecting them when they’re in transit or in a portfolio with other prints, to prevent scuffing. This makes it less than ideal as a portfolio paper but doesn’t present a problem with prints that are to be framed.”

Steves Digicams have published one of the first reviews of the Epson PictureMate inkjet printer.
“The PictureMate is a good choice for today’s digital camera users that only need to make 4 x 6-inch size prints. If you want to make larger prints then look at the larger photo inkjet printers from Canon, HP or Epson—the PictureMate is strictly a 4 x 6” size printer. It’s small and very portable, it even has a carrying handle built right in to prove that it was designed to be portable. The only thing the PhotoMate lacks to make it a “perfect” standalone printer is a color preview LCD.”

Integration in the high quality hardware and software complete solution “spectra jet concept”
Norderstedt, July 2004. TETENAL extends its huge spectra jet roll paper range with another high quality special paper for large format ink jet prints. The Photo Fine Art Carton combines the precision of a modern photo paper with the classical grace of traditional art paper due to its 308 g weight and matte coated surface. It is therefore especially suitable for reproducing exclusive images, such as portrait photography or artistic and historic images. Due to the exact colouring, high colour gamut and ability to reflect the finest b/w nuances, it is aimed specifically to photographers and artists who want their images printed to the highest quality as large format prints. Furthermore the acid free Photo Fine Art Carton 308 g is especially suitable for distinctive applications such as certificates or special POS displays. Epson is promoting television-based printing with its Livingstation line of large-screen televisions with built-in printers, and a recent partnership with several Japanese organisations:
“The Megaport project, which also involves media organizations such as Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun and publisher Kadokawa Shoten, produces television programs that combine broadcasts with printable content such as maps and brochures. For example, a viewer could watch a television commercial for a furniture store, then print out the product catalog with the click of a button.”
Livingstation projection TVs are currently available in the US, with the cheapest 47-inch LCD screen priced at $3,199. I wonder how much the inkjet cartridges cost?!

Epson Introduces PRINT Image Matching III for Improved Digital Images
- TOKYO, Japan, July 30, 2004 -
Seiko Epson Corporation (“Epson”) today announced that it has developed PRINT Image Matching III, advanced technology that provides users of digital cameras an easy way to consistently produce the best quality prints, prints that accurately reflect the photographer’s intent.
In 2001, Epson developed the introduction of PRINT Image Matching, a technology to help ensure faithful output of the colors captured by digital cameras. Many digital camera manufacturers agreed to support the new technology, and Epson succeeded in driving further expansion of the digital photography market. Over one hundred models of cameras equipped with PRINT Image Matching have arrived on the market, including digital still cameras, digital video cameras, and camera-equipped mobile phones. On the printer side, this technology is supported by all Epson inkjet printers currently on the market (as of July 30, 2004). As digital cameras and camera-equipped mobile phones deliver ever-increasing image quality and resolution, user requirements such as the desire to create attractive, faithful reproductions and prints of their photographs, are growing, as well. To respond to this demand, Epson has developed PRINT Image Matching III, with improved color-correction functionality.

PC Magazine have just reviewed the Kodak Easyshare Printer Dock that was first announced back in April.
“Although the printer is obviously of most interest if you have a Kodak camera that’s designed to fit into the docking area on top of the unit, like the EasyShare LS600/700 series, you can also print from a PictBridge camera, a memory card (with an external adapter), or a computer. The instructions for printing from a PictBridge camera lack important details, but we managed to figure it out on our own. We also successfully printed from a computer and from a SanDisk memory card reader, even though the printer officially supports only Kodak memory card readers.”

Beyond the creative boundary
Making its Photokina debut, newly launched fine art media supplier Innova Art will be mounting an exclusive presentation of The Passion Exhibition by internationally acclaimed photographer Ken Duncan on its stand D019, Hall 14.1.
The show of limited edition photographic prints taken from Mel Gibson’s masterpiece, The Passion of The Christ, is in itself a first, as the images have not previously been seen outside Duncan’s native Australia.
The project marks the summation of long cherished ambitions for all three parties involved. Mel Gibson’s devotion to recreating the life of Christ on the big screen, in all its horror, pathos and transcendent power, astounded the critics and drew audiences by the millions. For Duncan - invited on set by his boyhood friend, Gibson, to interpret the film through his trademark Panographs - the experience inspired some of the most moving, masterful images he has yet produced. And for Innova Art, onto whose papers the exhibition prints were made, it has meant an extraordinary start to their entry into the fine art market.

Steves Digicams have posted the first review that I have seen of the recently announced Canon PIXMA iP4000 inkjet printer.
“For your everyday text and color document printing tasks the Pixma iP4000 is an excellent printer and it’s very fast. It’s also very quiet and one of the most versatile printers that I’ve used in some time. The built-in duplexer (two-sided printing) is great for web page or document printouts and will save lots of wasted paper. It’s also great for printing your own professional-looking photo albums, sales flyers, catalogs or whatever.”

The technology website bios have reviewed the EPSON Stylus CX6600, which is a new All-in-One designed to improve the quality and cost efficiency of home and small office printing. It combines high-speed inkjet printing, scanning and photocopying with the flexibility of a memory card reader and the quality of EPSON DURABrite inks.
“We were really surprised by the Stylus CX6600’s exceptional print quality on a variety on media. The printer’s 4-colour printing system (up to 5760dpi optimised) uses variable-size ink droplets as small as 3pl to create detailed images with little visible evidence of dithering or banding - even using the software’s default settings. Text quality on regular paper was tight and controlled with little evidence of bleeding and areas of solid black appeared rich and convincing, a feature rarely seen with all-in-one devices. Photo reproduction was also above par on regular paper, although dithering and banding was more obvious.”

Vincent Oliver over at Photo-i has just completed his joint interactive review of the 7-colour Canon i990 and 8-colour Canon i9950 printers.
“When I started this review I wasn’t over convinced by the ChromaPlus inks, after all it was only two extra colours. The i990 with the extra red didn’t do much for me at all, although it was as good as any of the other printers (i965 & i950) in Canon’s range. The i9950 proved itself by producing excellent colour pictures time after time. Looking at the prints under daylight, the i9950 has shown itself to be one of the finest dye based colour printers currently available. Now if Canon can produce an A4 version of this, then I am sure they will give other manufacturers some very stiff competition.”
