With the launch of the new iPad, Apple has introduced an iOS version of its iPhoto software. As you’d expect, iPhoto for iOS incorporates multi-touch features so you can use simple gestures to sort through hundreds of photos and find your best shots, enhance and retouch your images using fingertip brushes. “iPhoto gives you full control over colour, exposure and contrast, and you simply touch the parts of the image you want to change,” the company says. “In addition to posting photos to Facebook, Flickr and Twitter, you can beam photos between your iPhone and iPad; stream photos and slideshows to your Apple TV with AirPlay; and use iCloud to publish photo journals to the web and share your stories with friends and family in a whole new way.” iPhoto for iOS is available now for £2.99/$4.99 through the iTunes App Store.

Photography education and gaming site PhoozL has released the iPad versions of its innovative quiz app for mobile: PhoozL IQ. Featuring large images and updated quiz questions, “PhoozL IQ for iPad” is a fun, quiz-type game that allows photo enthusiasts of all levels (amateur to pro) to test their photo knowledge while learning more about photography. The app comes in two flavours: a free version with fewer and easier questions and a Pro (paid) version with double the number of questions, challenge, and overall learning. The iPad edition is an 8MB download, compatible with iOS 4.3 or later.

Process for iOS allows users to create their own photo effects and presets. “Built on Core Image and OpenGL, Process is made for speed,” the developers say. Every adjustment made in Process is applied non-destructively and instantaneously. These adjustments can be grouped as “processes” or presets, which are essentially custom effects. Both outlandish, unique effects, as well as quick common fixes can be saved, and shared with others. Process 1.1.1 is available on iTunes for $3.99.

At the upcoming 2012 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show, Tiffen will be unveiling a number of new solutions across its brands, which include Tiffen optical filters, Steadicam, Lowel-Light, Davis & Sanford Tripods, Domke Bags, and Tiffen Dfx digital filter suite. onOne Software has released three new Preset Packs developed with the improved Develop Module tools in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4. The new preset packs include the Nicole Young Film Presets for Lightroom 4 and the Nicole Young Black and White Presets for Lightroom 4, developed by food and lifestyle photographer Nicole Young; as well as the New York City Stories Presets ­for Lightroom 4 built by onOne Software’s Curriculum and Education Manager, Brian Matiash. Corel has just released Corel VideoStudio Pro X5, the newest version of its video editing software, featuring screen recording and HTML5 authoring capabilities, multi-core acceleration, and advanced video compositing. “HTML5 offers a lot of possibilities for consumers who aspire to see their videos integrated onto web sites. DxO Labs have announced the immediate availability of DxO FilmPack 3.2 for Mac and Windows. This version adds full support for 64-bit environments and the ability to process very large files of up to 200 megapixels. Additionally, it brings major improvements in speed - the software starts up almost instantaneously, and image processing is up to two times faster than in version 3.1 - and adds full compatibility with Photoshop CS3, CS4, CS5, Photoshop Elements 9 and 10, and Aperture 3. .

Following news that Hasselblad H4D medium format cameras will ship with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom from March 12, an update announcement reveals the software will be Adobe’s latest version, Lightroom 4. Version 6.7 Release Candidate of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) is now available. This update adds support for a number of new cameras, including the Canon EOS 1D X, EOS 5D Mark III, PowerShot G1 X and PowerShot S100V, the Fujifilm FinePix F505EXR, F605EXR, HS30EXR and X-S1, as well as the Nikon D4, D800 and D800E. Additionally, the list of supported lenses has been expanded with a number of Leica, Sigma, Tamron and Tokina lenses. A Release Candidate label indicates that this update is well tested but would benefit from additional community testing before it is distributed automatically to all of Adobe’s customers.

The integrated photo book module within Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 is the result of close co-operation between Adobe and Blurb, the latter said in a statement. Adobe has just released Lightroom 4 for MacOS and Windows. Major enhancements versus the previous version include refined technology for superior shadow and highlight processing, the ability to create photo books, additional local adjustment controls, and enhanced video support. Now, native video support gives photographers the capability to play, trim and extract frames from video clips shot on DSLRs, point-and-shoot cameras and smartphones. Video-specific presets and many standard Lightroom image adjustment controls can be applied to video clips, and adjusted videos can be exported as a H.264 file or published directly to Facebook or Flickr. The estimated street price of Adobe Lightroom 4 is $149 for new users or $79 for upgrades. In the UK, Lightroom 4 is now available for £86.57 ex VAT for the full version and £49.24 ex VAT for the upgrade. A Student and Teacher edition is available for £49.24 ex VAT.

Serif has just launched MoviePlus X6, a desktop movie editor which allows entry-level users and enthusiasts to create movies from video clips captured on a camcorder, digital SLR or compact camera, smartphone or other pocket recording device quickly and easily. Users simply select from one of 20 professionally-designed themes, and import their own videos. Each theme contains customisable titles and credits plus matching transitions and effects. Other new features in MoviePlus X6 include the Video File Converter for easily converting video files, or batches of files, from one format to another and a re-designed Properties pane for a faster workflow. CyberLink has released PhotoDirector 3, a photography application designed to provide all the features photographers need to manage large batches of photos, adjust images, and showcase work in their own style, in a single package. This version introduces several new features, including precise editing tools that accurately remove objects, people or backgrounds from images as if they never existed and a complete set of tools to create professional portraits by smoothing out skin whitening teeth, removing wrinkles, and more. Additionally, PhotoDirector 3 provides new adjustment features including curve-based levels. The program is available today and can be downloaded from the CyberLink online store for $149.95.

Hasselblad and Adobe have signed an agreement to the effect that, beginning on the 12th March 2012, all newly purchased medium-format Hasselblad H4D cameras will include a fully functional copy of Lightroom at no extra charge. Fuzel is a new iOS app released by Ho Chi Minh City based software development company, Not A Basement Studio. “Whatever it is that you love, Fuzel helps you take their photos, put them together in your own layouts, retouch them individually with gorgeous photo filters, complete them with beautiful frames and captions, then share them with your loved ones on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, or just email,” the company says. Each individual frame within a collage can be adjusted separately. Fuzel 1.0 is available now on iTunes, currently priced at $0.99 - but do note that this is a special introductory offer.
