Photogenic Professional Lighting has launched two new monolights called PowerLine PL625DR and PowerLine PL625DRC. The PL625DR has a 6 f-stop flash output range from 7.8 to 250Ws, a built-in optical photo slave cell with infra-red triggering capability, a 250W modelling light and a quick, 1.25-second recycle time at full power. The PL625DRC has the same features as the PL625DR and also includes a UV Coated Flash Tube. Photogenic will feature these new products in the Promark booth (#630) at WPPI.

The Sony MRW-F3 is a compact memory card reader, which can be used to transfer photos and videos from a Memory Stick or SD memory card to a PC or play them back on a Sony Bravia TV. The F3 features a simple, single card slot that can accept a wide range of Memory Stick, SD and MMC media formats, including higher-capacity SDXC cards or high-speed UHS-I SD cards. This memory card reader is joined by the MRW-EA7, MRW-S2 and MRW-T2 that connect to any spare USB port via a short cable connection. The new range of memory card readers by Sony is available now.

PinPoint is a laser-aided system, which helps photographers combat focus hunting by allowing them to assist a camera’s AF system and make sure that the camera focuses on what they want it to, even in low-contrast conditions. When the photographer is ready to take the photo, he or she presses the activator button and PinPoint emits a narrow pulsing green light beam. The camera’s auto focus then quickly zeroes in on the light to acquire focus.The photographer can control the length of time the light is visible. PinPoint helps with low light conditions, monochromatic surfaces, picking subjects out of a crowd, macro photography, or when a photographer’s field of view is obscured. Made by DeluxGear, PinPoint will be unveiled at their distributor, International Supplies’, booth #732 at the 2011 WPPI show.

Induro has announced its new PHT-Series 3-way panheads with folding handles. Canon has launched the new Speedlite 320EX and Speedlite 270EX II flash units. The Speedlite 270EX II replaces the Speedlite 270EX at the entry level of Canon’s Speedlite range, whilst the Speedlite 320EX (pictured) is a compact and versatile flash for users of mid-level cameras who want to take more control over lighting. Arca-Swiss has launched the d4 and d4m pan-tilt heads that “put an end to setting levers of 3D heads that extend in all directions and always get in the way”. The innovative design unites the pivot points of the X and Y movements at the same point, resulting in identical rotational radii. Every tilt movement has its own fine tuning knob and a lockable free wheel button.. When both knobs are unlocked, the tilts can optionally be carried out in freewheeling modus. The possibility of free movement in both axes using the freewheeling modus then ensures free movements similar to those of a ball head. The Arca-Swiss d4 (800 grams, €790) has separate gear mechanisms for X- and Y-axis movements, while the d4m (640 grams, €490) has no gears.

Datacolor has released a step-by-step guide to using its SpyderCube calibration device. The SpyderCube helps photographers obtain accurate white balance as well as exposure readings and apply these to a series of shots. The white face of the device helps define highlights; the grey face serves as a grey point target as well as a mid-tone reference point; the black face defines shadows in relations to the Black Trap; and the Black Trap defines absolute black. Photographers simply need to take one reference shot with the SpyderCube, adjust the settings in the SpyderCube software and save them as a preset, which can then be applied to an entire series of raw files. Samsung has launched 100 SD cards into space, loaded with personal messages from people around the world. This campaign will see the world’s highest paper planes released at 125,000 feet. Each paper plane carries a memory card containing photos, songs, videos and text messages compiled by members of the public. In order to demonstrate the quality of the Ilford Galerie range, Ilford will offer a free 16x20-inch print to the first 100 professional photographers who submit their favourite image via the Ilford secure FTP site by 28th January. The free offer is limited to photographers planning to attend WPPI 2011 and prints will only be available for pick-up at the Ilford booth. The image should be transferred as the highest possible quality JPEG, rendered in Adobe RGB or sRGB at a minimum of 300dpi, and not exceed 20 inches in the longer dimension.
