Living Exposed have a competition open for two scholarships to join a photography project on the Big Island from 21 to 25 January 2010. A broad range of participants are sought, from beginners looking to learn more about cameras and all their capabilities to professional photographers eager to apply their knowledge and expertise to something new. All applicants must submit five images and also provide a brief background of themselves and their objectives. The deadline for submission is 7 December 2009. Regular participants are required to pay a registration fee of $950, whereas those receiving the scholarships will be exempt from the registration fee and given a stipend of $500 to help offset travel expenses to and from Kona, Hawaii. Three teens have been selected as national winners in Sightsavers International’s i-click competition 2009. Emily Tudor, aged 13 from Buckinghamshire, won first prize in the 11-14 category, Stacy Leigh Stewart, aged 16 from Scotland won first prize in the 15-16 category and Lolita Cameron, aged 17 won first prize in the 17-18 category. Their photos, selected from hundreds of entries submitted by young photographers from across the UK, will be displayed in a special exhibition alongside photos by Harry Potter star Katie Leung and X-Factor pop sensation Same Difference. The exhibition, ‘i:click – when actions speak louder than words’ will be held in the gallery@oxo on London’s South Bank from 10 December 2009 – 10 January 2010 and entrance is free of charge.

The Mail Tribune is now accepting reader submissions for its Rogue Valley 2009 Photo Contest. Mail Tribune readers are invited to submit photos they snapped in Southern Oregon during 2009. Images can be of anything from neighbours and places, to regional events and familiar valley icons, as long as they depict the photographer’s unique take on life in the valley. The submission period is open now and will continue through December 31, 2009. Voting will begin New Year’s Day and continue through January 7, 2010. Reader votes will be collected via online balloting, and will be counted along with votes by a panel of expert judges. Winning photos will appear on an In Focus photo page in the Mail Tribune in January. Grand Prize will be a Vixen VMC 1-10L Telescope from Bach’s Camera. Other prizes will include: a Tamrac 5210 Camera Bag & Digipod 550 tripod to the first runner-up, and a 17x24 gallery wrapped canvas print for the second runner-up. Now in its second year, the CB Richard Ellis competition sets a brief for photographers to explore “cities at work” at any time during a 24-hour period. The organisers split the day up into 24 hours and allow for up to 24 images per photographer, but only one per hour of the day. Winners for each hour are chosen by their judging panel, and the prize for each hour is sponsored by an international brand. The winner and two runners-up will be given prizes sponsored directly by CB Richard Ellis. The grand prize will be a week’s holiday for two in Jordan. Whereas the previous competition was only open to contestants from the UK, this year they are opening up the competition to all photographers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. As with every competition, we encourage you to read the rules before entering your work.

Anna Fox, Zoe Leonard, Sophie Ristelhueber and Donovan Wylie have been nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2010, and their work will be on display in The Photographers’ Gallery, London, from February. The exhibition opens on 12 February 2010 and runs until 18 April. The winner of the £30,000 annual award wil be announced on 17 March. The Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2010 rewards a living photographer of any nationality, who has made the most significant contribution, in exhibition or publication format, to the medium of photography in Europe between 1 October 2008 and 30 September 2009.

If you have any interesting photos taken with a Lensbaby, now’s your chance to get published! Your shot might become one of a dozen photographs that will illustrate a new book by Lensbaby guru Corey Hilz, due out from Focal Press in the Summer of 2010.  “The book will feature ‘how to’ and inspirational content, along with galleries of Lensbaby photos by some of the foremost Lensbaby photographers in the world,” Lensbaby says. “At least 12 of the submitted images will be featured in the Lensbaby book. Popular voting on the Lensbaby forum will be used to help decide one of the chosen images. Corey Hilz and Craig Strong will pick the remaining images”. You have until the end of the year to submit up to two photos for consideration. Voting will take place from 1 to 7 January 2010 and the selected images will be announced on 15 January.

The Mail Tribune is now accepting submissions for its annual Oregon Outdoors Wild Bird Photo Contest. Open to everyone from long-time birders, to amateur photographers, to nature enthusiasts, the Oregon Outdoors Wild Bird Photo Contest invites participants to capture the beauty of their feathered friends in their natural habitats. Participants may enter as many bird photos as they like, but will only be eligible to win one award. All submissions must be accompanied by a completed entry form. The prestigious Lange-Taylor documentary photography award is now calling for entries. Named after photographer Dorothea Lange and writer Paul Taylor, whose 1941 book, American Exodus, was a milestone in documentary studies, the Lange-Taylor award “was created to encourage collaboration between documentary writers and photographers”. In that spirit, the award is offered to a writer and a photographer in the early stages of a documentary project. Now in its twenthieth year, the Lange-Taylor award comes with a $20,000 cash prize. The 2009 winners, Christian Parenti and Teru Kuwayama won the prize for their project exploring the “human landscape” of Pakistan. Entries for the 2010 award are to be submitted between 1 and 31 January 2010.

Lomography has announced a special contest that gives you the chance to turn the Lomo LC-A+, billed as a “classic, iconic snapshot wonder”, into your very own masterpiece The Lomo LC-A is a simple, plastic 35mm film camera that has been around for 25 years. The LC-A+ is an improved version of the original LC-A, and Lomography is now asking you to download the Lomo LC-A+ template from its website, cut it out like a paper camera, customise the paper camera according to your tastes, and either upload your customised templates or send them by post to the Lomography headquarters in Vienna. Submissions must be received by 10 January 2010. The winning design will go to actual production as a limited edition model, and the winner will be awarded with an opportunity to travel to the Lomography HQ in Vienna, with flight and accommodation paid. He/she will also receive five of the limited-edition Lomo LC-A+ cameras they had designed.

Sony World Photography Awards is looking to uncover the best amateur football photographs in the world for the 2010 Campaign Award, and offers the winner tickets, travel and accommodation to a FIFA World Cup game in South Africa. Combining the global love for football and sports photography, the Campaign Award seeks to find an image that captures the emotion and the passion of football from the fan’s point of view. All submitted images will be shown in a gallery the Sony World Photography Awards website and rated by the public.  The top 100 images will then be presented to a judging panel chaired by Delly Carr, one of the world’s leading and multi award winning sports photographers. The competition is free to enter and open to amateur photographers from across the globe.  The closing date is Friday 4 December 2009.

The winners of the Hahnemühle’s Anniversary Collection awards competition have been selected from 7,100 entries. The competition, part of Hahnemühle’s 425th Anniversary celebration, featured entries from all over the world and was judged by a distinguished panel of international experts. Three winners were selected in each of the three open categories: People & Portrait; Landscape & Nature and Architecture & Still Life as well as three winners in the Student category. The winners were notified and asked to submit their original digital files, but were not told what place they had been awarded. These will be announced at a special Photokina preview presentation in November. Nikon Inc. today announced the launch of a new integrated marketing campaign that includes the first ever “Nikon Festival” to celebrate, inspire and harness the current popularity of content creation shared through social media. Nikon is challenging budding filmmakers to upload 140 second short-form video with the theme “A Day through Your Lens” to the festival’s website. As videos are uploaded, they can be automatically shared with entrants’ social networks, including Twitter and Facebook, allowing instantaneous campaigning for views and votes. Festival entrants will have the opportunity to win one of two awards: an audience award and a judges’ award. The winning video selected by the Festival judges will be awarded $100,000 and Nikon equipment.  Additionally, the video getting the highest average rating and most audience views will be awarded the $25,000 Audience Award and Nikon equipment.
