ADP Bricks and Mortals CompetitionLeading nationwide architectural practice ADP has launched its first photography competition, Bricks and Mortals. The winner will be awarded a £1000 commission to photograph one of ADP’s completed buildings, plus £750 worth of camera equipment vouchers. Open to higher and further education students, in their final year of photography and similar courses, as well as Part II and Part III architectural students, the Bricks and Mortals judges will be lloking for the entry that best captures the subtle interaction between people and the built environment. Closing date for entries is 30th January 2009.

Annabel Williams 2009 Photographic AwardsThe Annabel Williams 2009 Photographic Awards are aimed at all wedding, portrait and lifestyle photographers. There are seven different categories to enter, with the overall winner awarded ‘Annabel Williams Photographer of the Year 2009”. With a total prize fund of more than £10,000, the awards will run until 31st March 2009. The entry fee is £5.00 and you can enter as many categories as you like.

Sony Ericsson World View 2008The winners of Sony Ericsson’s World View 2008 cameraphone competition have been announced. The camera phone photo entitled “Peace” by Marriane Nill from the Philippines has won the ‘Expert’s Choice Award’. Marriane received a once in a life time photography trip for two, worth £10,000. Gisela Cañete from Argentina was named as the winner of the “The People’s Choice Award”. World View 2009 will kick off in the first half of 2009.

Tamron Wet & Wild CompetitionTamron has announced the winners of its 2008 Wet & Wild user photo competition. John O’Bryan of Moscow, Idaho won the Grand Prize title, winning a Tamron AF28-300mm VC zoom lens, and Donald Handley was named the People’s Choice winner. 2008 Olympus BioScapesThe winners of the 2008 Olympus BioScapes competition have just been announced. Mr. M. I. “Spike” Walker of Staffordshire, England, took top honors for the shimmering image of what is called a fairy fly. Mr. Walker’s image triumphed over more than 1500 other images and movies - a competition record - to earn him $5000 worth of Olympus equipment. This year, in addition to Prizes 1-10, 70 other images and movies were recognized with Honorable Mentions. Twenty of the 2008 winning and Honorable Mention images will be displayed in San Francisco at an event on December 14, and then will begin a national tour.

Modern Virtues & Modern VicesModern Virtues & Modern Vices is a new competition from the Royal Photographic Society that aims to recreate a forgotten scandal of Victorian photography. Printed from 32 separate negatives, combined in the darkroom to make a single image, Oscar Gustav Rejlander’s controversial work juxtaposed images of piety and debauchery to dramatic effect, and caused a public sensation in 1857. Competition entrants will be asked to digitally combine and alter images to create a modern version of ‘Two ways of life’. The winning entry will receive a prize of £500 and a free year’s membership of The Society. The closing date is 30th April 2009.

2008 Nikon Small WorldThe winners of the 2008 Nikon Small World competition have been announced. Michael Stringer’s dazzling photo of Pleurosigma (marine diatoms) was magnified 200 times and taken using darkfield and polarized light. “My objective was to display diatoms in today’s modern style, through the careful application of colors,” said Mr. Stringer, “I couldn’t be more pleased that the Small World judges recognized the artistic vision in this image.” The 2008 gallery of winning images can be viewed at www.nikonsmallworld.com .

PNY Family Photo ContestPNY has launched the “Let Our Memory Capture Your Memories” photo contest to help raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Parents can submit a favorite photo of their child to the contest and encourage their friends and family to vote for the photo. The contest runs until January 31st 2009, and PNY will donate $20,000 to St. Jude in the winner’s name. PNY are separately donating $100,000 to the hospital.

Shipping Container Contest WinnerAndrew Sassoli-Walker, from Southampton, UK, is the winner of the Container Shipping Information Service global photography competition. Launched in August, and entitled ‘The box that changed our lives’, competition applicants were asked to email unusual or creative pictures of container boxes. The Awards, now in its 24th year, is the longest running and most prestigious student photography awards in the UK. The winner will see their image on the cover of the next edition of Rachel Carson’s revolutionary book Silent Spring, published by Penguin Books.
