Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N2CameraLabs have reviewed the 10 megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N2 camera.

“Along with higher resolution, Sony’s also increased the maximum sensitivity to 1600 ISO. Like most compacts at this kind of sensitivity though the results ain’t pretty and it’s really for emergency use only. The 800 ISO setting is just about acceptable on smaller prints, but you really want to keep the N2 between 100 and 400 ISO for the best results. Again though in these respects it’s no different from most compacts.”

Fujifilm FinePix S6000fdDIWA member Photoxels have reviewed the the Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd (also known as the S6500fd), a 6 megapixel digital camera with a 10.7x zoom lens equivalent to 28-300mm.

“If you’ve ever wished for a “photographer’s camera” with all the features you’ll ever need to learn and grow, including long zoom, wide-angle coverage, full exposure flexibility, ... the Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd Zoom is probably the best there is currently. Sure, it is missing image stabilization, but many pros go through life without this feature, do not miss it, and manage to take beautiful pictures without it.”

Canon SD40Imaging Resource have just reviewed the new Canon SD40 digital camera (also known as the Canon Digital IXUS i7 zoom).

“For me, one of the most important improvements on the Canon SD40 is that it uses Canon’s new DIGIC III processor. Canon’s DIGIC processors have proven to be very effective over the years in eliminating lag in just about all aspects of camera operation. Until you try a model with a less-than-speedy processor, it’s easy to forget what a difference a DIGIC makes.”

Kodak Easyshare V603Imaging Resource have reviewed the new Kodak Easyshare V603 camera, which offers 6.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5 inch LCD, and available for $299.95.

“Digicams with retracting lenses are among the slowest to start up and shut down, but my Quibble Meter didn’t register even a tick with the Kodak V603. It’s above average power-on time in the lab matched my actual experience with it. I had no trouble turning it off to conserve battery power when I knew I wasn’t going to use it again right away. With some cameras you dread that moment because it means a long wait to start it up again.”

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FX3TrustedReviews have reviewed the 6 megapixel Panasonic DMC-FX3, which features a LEICA DC lens with image stabilizer and an ISO 1600 High Sensitivity Mode.

“Colour rendition is good, producing natural tones even in the overcast weather we’ve had down here. It coped well with a range of exposure conditions and showed better dynamic range than some comparable cameras I’ve seen recently. The lens is also good, offering edge-to-edge sharpness and minimal spherical distortion at wide angle. There was some purple fringing on some high-contrast shots, but it was fairly unobtrusive.”

Fujifilm FinePix S9600ThinkCamera have reviewed the new Fujifilm S9600 (called the FinePix S9100 in the USA), which is a 9 megapixel camera with a 10x zoom lens.

“Another improvement is in the size of the LCD. It’s now a 2-inch LCD monitor with 235,000 pixels and the tilting LCD screen on the Fujifilm FinePix S9600 means you can shoot at any angle, such as close to the ground or above the head. Unlike conventional digital SLRs, it can also be used to compose images which some people will like. It’s nice and clear and I found that even in the bright conditions on Sunday I could still see the image. The Fuji uses an electronic viewfinder to though so if it’s too bright to see the screen you can view your images that way instead.”

Samsung NV3DigiCamReview have just reviewed the 7 megapixel Samsung NV3 digital camera.

“Image quality is good but not brilliant for an ultra compact digital camera - the images have good colour with very high saturation, good contrast, and low noise except at higher ISO settings. The higher ISO settings of ISO800 and ISO1000 were fairly disappointing and lacked colour. Detail seemed lower than expected, and images did appear slightly over-processed resulting in soft looking images. Indoors photos were good, with noise kept fairly low, although there was noticable red eye. Purple fringing was noticed in one of the shots.”

InvenSenseInvenSense Press Release

SANTA CLARA, November 9, 2006—InvenSense, the leading provider of motion sensing solutions for mobile applications, announced that Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. has selected its single-chip gyroscope for use in its new generation of digital still camera (DSC) models with image stabilization (IS) features. InvenSense’s IDG-1000 gyroscope family utilizes MEMS technology to provide the world’s only integrated dual-axis solution with the smallest footprint at very competitive prices. As DSCs continue to increase in pixel density and optical zoom range, subtle hand movements become problematic, particularly in low light settings, resulting in poor image quality. Camera manufacturers need high-performance, small form factor gyroscopes to measure and correct natural hand jitter in order to provide high-quality pictures.

Fujifilm FinePix F650 ZoomCNET have published the first online review of the Fujifilm FinePix F650 Zoom, a compact camera boasting six megapixels, a 5x optical zoom and super-size 3-inch LCD screen.

“Although Fujifilm was among the first manufacturers to raise the sensitivity of its compact digicams, the F650 oddly tops out at ISO 400. And since it doesn’t come with image stabilization, you’ll have to rely on the flash when shooting in low light. The lack of flash compensation makes flash shooting less versatile than we like. On the plus side, the FinePix did a decent job of balancing fill flash with a desk lamp in our test scene.”

Sony DSC-H2Steves Digicams have reviewed the 6 megapixel Sony DSC-H2 ultrazoom camera.

“I was pleased with the H2’s results outdoors. The power of the 12x zoom lens gets you very close to the action, allowing well-composed shots even from the spectator areas at sporting events. The autofocus system and lens combined to produce sharp results, although the Continuous AF did have some difficulty keeping a moving subject in focus. Images were well-exposed and richly saturated right out of the camera, but you can override the degree of sharpness, contrast and saturation using the camera’s menu system.”

Canon PowerShot G7DCResource have reviewed the new Canon G7, which features a 10 megapixel, 1/1.8 inch sensor, DIGIC III image processor, Face Detection, 35-210mm lens and optical image stabilization system.

“Standing on its own, the Canon PowerShot G7 is a very good, full-featured camera. It has very good image quality, superb performance, a stabilized 6X zoom lens, full manual controls, and support for an external flash. However, as a follow-up to the PowerShot G6, this camera is a big disappointment. Gone are the fast lens, rotating LCD, remote control, LCD info display, and RAW support that made that camera one of my favorites. And, with a retail price of almost $600, the G7 is priced dangerously close to entry-level digital SLRs. Do I recommend it? Yep. In the same way that I did the previous G-series cameras? Nope.”

Canon PowerShot A640CameraLabs have reviewed the new Canon A640 and Canon A630, which has 10 megapixels, a 2.5 inch LCD screen and 4x optical zoom lens.

“Speaking of which, the increase to a maximum of 800 ISO is still quite modest compared to the 1600 and even 3200 ISO modes boasted by other compacts, but of course it’s the quality that counts. Interestingly the A640 adopts a different approach to noise compared to most compacts these days. It appears to apply much lower noise reduction to avoid smearing fine detail, although at the cost of visible noise speckles. Ultimately it’s a personal choice as to which looks best, but we prefer Canon’s approach as at least the detail’s there and you can apply further noise reduction in software later as required.”

Fujichrome FinePix Z5fdFujifilm UK Press Release

08 November 2006 - Fujifilm is pleased to announce the launch of the Fujifilm FinePix Z5fd; the first in its range of ‘Z’ series cameras to feature hardware-based Face Detection technology. Available in three colours, Raspberry Red, Mocha Brown and Silver, the Fujifilm Z5fd becomes the flagship in Fujifilm’s ultra-slim, style-compact line-up alongside the FinePix Z3 and Z2. With 3x optical zoom, 6.3 Megapixels, ISO 1600, Intelligent Flash and new blog mode; plus Fujifilm’s unique Super CCD HR and RP Processor II, the Fujifilm Z5fd’s diminutive size and chic outer-shell look at odds with the amount of technology at its heart. The Fujifilm FinePix Z5fd is small enough that it will fit easily into a pocket or the most minimalist of clutch bags. The Fujifilm FinePix Z5fd features the traditional ‘Z’ series sliding lens cover, with a ‘Z5’ motif that lights up in operation, 2.5” scratch resistant LCD screen and non-extending Fujinon 3x optical zoom lens so that it will emerge unscathed from even the most cluttered of spaces.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ50DIWA member LetsGoDigital have published their review of the recently announced 10 megapixel Panasonic DMC-FZ50 camera.

“One of the major assets of the Panasonic DMC-FZ50 is its lens, which not only offers a gigantic range, but also proves to be of excellent quality. And let’s be honest: that is exactly what one would expect of a lens that features the Leica brand name. The distortion is kept reasonably under control, the sharpness is high and chromatic aberration only occurs when working with extremely high contrasts. Another great addition is the camera’s regular zoom and focus ring. This simply is a lot easier and more pleasant to work with than buttons.”

Nikon Coolpix L5CNET have reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix L5, which offers a 5x zoom lens, 7 megapixels and 2.5 inch LCD screen.

“Sometimes, the appeal of simplicity is too hard to ignore. That could explain why we’ve seen a growing number of cameras that combine a very short list of features with lots of automation to provide a relatively thought-free shooting experience. This should definitely appeal to people who are confused by the various settings on most cameras and have no interest in learning about them, though as you’d imagine, tweakers will want to steer clear. Nikon’s Coolpix L5 isn’t as bare-bones an experience as Olympus’s FE series or even Nikon’s own Coolpix L6, but it’s still fairly basic.”
