PRAKTICA DCZ 6.3 – The passion of photography - If modern colour psychology is right, red stands for passion and the desire for happiness. PRAKTICA is adapting this passion – this fire –to its latest model – the DCZ 6.3. Every single pixel of the six million on the CCD sensor is taking care that even the most filigree detail is stored accurately and brought to life on the 2.5” monitor afterwards. High resolution video clips are no problem either. Whether you record with 320x240 or 640x480 pixels with a constant rate of 30 frames per second – the world around you starts to move.

DPReview have reviewed the Canon PowerShot S3 IS, a 6 megapixel camera with an image stabilized 12x zoom lens, ISO 800 and a 2 inch LCD screen.
“Comparisons with it predecessor aside, the S3 IS Image quality is very good - certainly on a par with most of its competitors - though the results are still a bit on the soft side, something the fairly high default sharpening doesn’t really help. Again, experimenting with the in-camera parameters and a little sympathetic post-processing means that in the right hands it can produce images every bit as good as anything else in its class.”

CNET have just reviewed the Olympus mju 720 SW, a 7.1 megapixel, 3x zoom, 2.5 inch LCD, weatherproof digital camera.
“The most weatherproof Stylus to date, the Olympus Stylus 720 SW is a waterproof, 7.1-megapixel camera that’s fully submersible up to 10 feet, for an hour at a time. This ultracompact Stylus also happens to be shockproof (putting the S in SW), rated to withstand a drop of five feet. Sleek, responsive, and outfitted with image stabilization, the Stylus 720 SW makes a rugged and welcome travel companion.”

DCResource have reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix P3 camera, which offers 8.1 megapixels, 3.5x optical zoom lens and a 2.5 inch LCD.
“Overall the photo quality on the Coolpix P3 was very good. It generally took well-exposed photos (it underexposed a few shots) with accurate colors and minimal purple fringing. Noise levels are reasonable given the resolution of the camera. My only real complaint is that photos are a bit soft straight out of the camera. If you agree you can turn up the sharpness a bit in the shooting menu.”

PCMagazine have just reviewed the Kodak Easyshare V610, the world’s smallest 10x zoom digital camera.
“It’s an ultracompact. It’s a superzoom. It’s even wireless. Is this some kind of Orwellian digital camera triplespeak? No, it’s Kodak being (mostly) truthful in introducing its new 6-megapixel dual-lens camera, the EasyShare V610 ($449.95 list). I love the idea of the V610, but the pictures I took didn’t blow me away, and the price is no bargain. In the end, the V610 is a good camera that has some unique features, but it falls short of being a great buy.”

CNET have just reviewed the entry-level Fujifilm FinePix A500 Zoom digital camera.
“Image quality at wide-angle and medium-range focal lengths was acceptable, especially if you take the time to adjust the EV settings. Without tweaking, we found exposures to be quite erratic and frequently overbright with blown-out highlights. Using exposure compensation to dial it back a bit produced better images. Pics shot at the lens’s telephoto end were quite soft but displayed good detail at less extreme settings. Colors were accurate but unsaturated, and JPEG compression artifacts reduced image sharpness.”

CNET have reviewed the Pentax Optio W10, a 6 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5 inch LCD and a waterproof body.
“Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor sand, nor mud, nor dust will stop the 6-megapixel Pentax Optio W10. This postal-worker-worthy camera is specially sealed to prevent damage from the elements, completely submersible in water to a depth of 4.9 feet for up to 30 minutes, and impenetrable to dust particles as fine as talcum powder. Even if you don’t plan on taking it into the drink or the desert, the Optio W10’s design makes it virtually immune to the wet, nasty weather that could kill other cameras.”

DigitalCameraReview have published their review of the Olympus SP-320, a 7.1 megapixel camera with 3x zoom, 2.5 inch LCD, full range of shooting modes and RAW format.
“The Olympus SP-320 is a good choice for someone looking for camera with advanced features (RAW, aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual modes) but who still has a pretty tight budget. At a street price under $300, the SP-320 stays affordable for such “advanced” features. The camera takes high quality images with good color and detail. It’s also easy to use, yet still has plenty of customizability with custom shortcuts and the ability to set up to four custom modes. Battery life is good, if you can handle some of the power management issues that I’ve brought up (cycle time and LCD black out after batteries have discharged a bit). “

TrustedReviews have published a review of the Fujifilm FinePix S5600 Zoom (also known as the S5200 in the US), a 5 megapixel compact digital camera with Fujifilm’s new 5th Generation Super CCD HR sensor with Real Photo Technology.
“Despite having a 10x zoom lens, the S5600 has no image stabilization. What it does have however is the ability to shoot at high ISO settings with very little image noise. Fujifilm is so far the only company to really crack the image noise problem at higher ISO speeds, and with its relatively fast F3.2-3.5 lens the S5600 can produce good results at shutter speeds around 2-3 stops higher than other comparable cameras under the same lighting conditions. Since most IS systems only offer the same 2-3 stop advantage the S5600 does just as well without one, which helps to keep the price down.”

Imaging Resource have just reviewed the new 6 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5 camera.
“Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-LZ5 falls near the bottom of the Lumix line, providing an affordable option to snapshot photographers who want a useful selection of automatic settings in a compact camera. Its 6-megapixel resolution and optically stabilized 6x zoom lens will give those photographers lots of shooting flexibility and the ability to make large prints. Quick to start up, focus, and shoot, this Lumix is at its best when you’re taking pictures of the people around you. It’s less adept at action photography though, and its large LCD viewfinder turns out to be a mixed blessing. But if you’re looking for a well-designed snapshot camera to capture social occasions and excursions, the LZ5 won’t disappoint you.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the new Kodak Easyshare P880 digital camera. The Kodak Easyshare P880 is an 8 megapixel model with wide-angle 24–140 mm zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“In particular the image quality of the Kodak EasyShare P880 and the quality of the lens are the things I am very enthusiastic about. The Kodak P880 is a real wide-angle which is ideal for landscape imaging as well as in-house imaging. It is suitable for street photography too. With a 140mm tele there is plenty of room for zooming, which makes it a universally employable lens. The quality is excellent as well. The distortion stays between the standards and the chromatic aberration was negligible. Vignetting is not worth mentioning also. The sharpness is of high level, only directed to the corners some details become unsharp.”

DigitalCameraReview have just reviewed the Olympus mju 720 SW, a 7.1 megapixel, 3x zoom, 2.5 inch LCD, weatherproof digital camera.
“Dedicated underwater cases for compact digital cameras generally run at least half the purchase price of the camera, so the 720 SW’s $400.00 (underwater ready) price tag is a real bargain for snorkelers, sailboarders, boaters, swimmers, water skiers, seashore lovers, and beachcombers. The 720 SW’s images are a bit soft overall, but when the camera’s underwater capabilities, dust/weather resistance, and general toughness are factored in - I believe its strengths outweigh its weakness by a substantial margin.”

Imaging Resource have published their review of the Samsung Digimax L50, a 5 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD screen with 230,000 pixels.
“With the Digimax L50, we found that it had enough resolution to make very crisp 8x10 inch prints. At 11x14, its prints were a bit softer looking, but more than adequate for wall or table display. At high ISO, image noise levels are held in check, but at the cost of rather soft and slightly desaturated images. ISO 200 photos still hold together when printed at up to 11x14 inches, and even ISO 400 images would do a passable wall display, except that the colors come out of the printer looking aged.”
