PCMagazine have reviewed the Sony Cyber-shot N1, an 8 megapixel digital camera with a 3 inch touch-screen LCD and 3x optical zoom lens.
“With its signature slick, stylish design and a large, 3-inch touch screen, Sony’s latest Cyber-shot DSC-N1 looks very cool, but it has a lot more than good looks going for it. This 8.1-megapixel ultracompact doesn’t unseat the current ultracompact Editors’ Choice, the Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital Elph, but it has a lot of great features that make it an appealing choice for style- and performance-conscious shutterbugs.”

CameraLabs have just published a group test of 4 compact digital cameras.
“At Camera Labs we believe a good quality compact could be one of the best investments you’ll ever make. It will end up travelling almost everywhere with you and be responsible for recording some of your most memorable events. As such we strongly believe you shouldn’t skimp when buying a compact, but at the same time you don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy excellent results. So over the following pages we’ve taken four of the most popular mid-range models and put them through their paces in our first compact camera group test. We’ve tested Canon’s chunky but powerful PowerShot A620, Fujifilm’s highly sensitive FinePix F11, the tiny Pentax Optio S6 and the futuristic touch-screen action of Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-N1.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the Kodak Easyshare P850 camera which features a 12x, 36 – 432 mm, image-stabilised, f2.8 – f/3.7, SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON lens.
“The Kodak EasyShare P850 joins a long line of EasyShare digital cameras that are among the easiest and most goof-proof out there, and the Kodak P850 maintains this ease of use, though it does offer an expanded range of options. Featuring a five-megapixel CCD, an impressive 12x optical zoom, and an extensive array of automatic and manual exposure modes, the Kodak P850 is a capable camera with great flexibility. Like the rest of the EasyShare line, the Kodak P850 is compatible with Kodak’s popular Printer Docks, offering one-button printing. The P850 appeals to novices and experienced users alike, and will make a good fit for many consumers.”

DCResource have reviewed the new Olympus SP-350, an 8 megapixel camera that offers a 3x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-114mm and a 2.5 inch LCD monitor.
“Camera performance is, without a doubt, the SP-350’s biggest weak point. While the camera starts up quickly, it’s all downhill from there. Focus times are just fair, shutter lag was noticeable (which was very surprising), and shot-to-shot times can be lengthy, especially if you’re using RAW mode. The continuous shooting modes were nothing to write home about, either. Playback speeds were slow as well, especially when RAW images are displayed. Low light focusing performance was a little disappointing for a camera with an AF-assist lamp.”

DigitalCameraReview have published a review of the Nikon Coolpix P2 Wi-Fi digital camera.
“While no means a killer to the overall camera’s value, some of Nikon’s user interface and human design factor choices baffle me. For example, the knob on the top of the camera that changes modes on just about every other camera on the planet does more than just change modes. There is a setting for ‘Setup’, changing resolution, ISO, and white balance settings. There is also a setting to enter wireless mode to begin photo transfer. An inexperienced user could become very confused if the camera slips into ISO mode, the camera stops taking pictures, and the user is asked what ISO they want to shoot. Strange.”

Imaging Resource have published their review of the Fujifilm FinePix S9500 Zoom, a new 9 megapixel digital camera with a 28-300mm lens with twist-barrel zoom control (also known as the S9000).
“Fujifilm, one of the major players in the digital camera field, has introduced the FinePix S9000. Replacing the FinePix S7000 at the company’s high end, the Fuji S9000’s resolution has been upped to a class-leading nine megapixels, and an extremely powerful 10.7x optical zoom lens combines to offer what Fujifilm obviously feels can compete head-on with competitors’ digital SLR offerings. ISO sensitivity has been improved to allow ISO 1600 at full resolution, and an articulated LCD display caches in on the main advantage of non-SLR cameras - a live preview image that lets you see what you’ll get before you press the shutter button. With a refined user interface and the same great exposure features, autofocus options, and performance as the S7000, the Fuji S9000 could be a hit for the company - but how will it stack up against the increasingly competitive DSLR segment?”

CNET have published their review of the 4 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 4600.
“The Coolpix 4600’s photos were similar to the Coolpix 5600’s, except for the lower resolution. Overall, the image quality was quite good. The colors in our exterior shots looked a bit oversaturated, even for a point-and-shoot camera. This was especially evident with the brighter hues, though less obvious with more subdued colors, such as skin tones, that need to be more realistic. Image noise, sharpness, and exposure accuracy were better than average in our well-lit exterior shots.”

CNET have published their review of the Kodak EasyShare Z700, a 4 megapixel digital camera with 5x optical zoom lens.
“What makes the Kodak EasyShare Z700 a viable offering in the universe of low-cost, noncompact, non-EVF 4-megapixel cameras is what you get for the price. The surprising amount of manual control with programmed, aperture-priority, and shutter-priority modes, the 5X zoom lens with unexpected telephoto reach, and the Z700’s decent image quality all exceed what you might expect from a camera in this class. And for just a little more than the camera-only price, you can buy it packaged with a handy Kodak Printer Dock 3.”

Photobird.com have reviewed the new Canon IXUS 55 compact digital camera (also known as the SD450), which has 5.0 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD screen and 3x optical zoom lens.
“The SD550 is about $100 more. My advice is to save your $100, buy the 5-megapixel SD450, and use the $100 to buy a tripod ($25), a large 512MB Secure Digital memory card ($35), a copy of “Understanding Exposure” or “Amphoto’s Complete Book of Photography” ($15) to improve your photography skills, and a subscription to a website where you can easily share your photos online, such as Photobird.com ($25). You’ll get a tremendous amount more usage and benefits from this combination of products than you would from an extra 2 megapixels in your camera.”

Pocket-Lint have published a review of the Fujifilm FinePix S5600 Zoom, a 5 megapixel compact digital camera with Fujifilm’s new 5th Generation Super CCD HR sensor with Real Photo Technology.
“Image quality. The S5600 easily lives up to the standards set by its forbears with sharp colourful images. A vivid ‘Chrome’ setting allows for extra saturation of shots (there’s a black and white mode too and I’ve included a shot in that mode in this test for you too), ideal for vivid greens and reds. Noise is well controlled as we’ve discussed but highlights become lost quickly if there’s a bright background in a scene for example. All almost identical problems I found with the 5500. Over processing for noise is an issue on this model however, but shooting RAW allows you to control this with even more precision.”

TrustedReviews have just reviewed the Casio EX-Z500, a 5 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens and 2.7 inch LCD screen.
“The previous model suffered from blurring at the edges of the image at wide angle, but I’m happy to report that there is no such problem here. Image quality was excellent for a camera in this class, with superb colour reproduction, as well as quick and accurate focusing and exposure in most lighting conditions. The EX-Z500 has an AF illuminator, so it can focus in very low light, at least at close range. The flash is also good at medium range, but tends to drop off very quickly after about two metres, or over-expose horribly at ranges closer than about 50cm. The problems which the Z50 suffered with image noise have been completely cured. The Z500 has excellent noise control, with usable images produced at 400 ISO, and beautifully smooth images at lower speeds.”

PCMagazine have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S4, which has 6 megapixels and a 10x Zoom-Nikkor lens that is equivalent to 38-380mm.
“Nikon’s latest superzoom, the Nikon Coolpix S4, is designed so that the lens and the body can rotate independently of each other. This swiveling design was first introduced on the Coolpix 900 a number of years ago, and the last Nikon to have it was the 4X optical Coolpix 4500. It’s a wonderful design, especially useful for Hail Mary shots or shooting over crowds. Unfortunately, we found the pictures taken with the S4 to be a bit disappointing.”

DesignTechnica have reviewed the Olympus SP-500UZ digital camera, which has a 10x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-380mm, 6 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD screen and an electronic viewfinder.
“The 10x Olympus SP-500UZ is in the thick of a tough fight with Canon, Kodak, Konica-Minolta and Sony, all battling for photographers who want powerful zooms that are great for all-around use, especially vacations. It has some good things going for it and some negatives. Most you can live with but I had a tough time dealing with the uneven focusing.”

CNET have just reviewed the Panasonic DMC-FZ30. This is an 8 megapixel compact digital camera with a 12x Leica optical zoom lens equivalent to 35-420mm, optical image stabilizer, addition of a manual zoom ring and rotating LCD screen with 235,000 pixels.
“As their prices converge, it’s getting more difficult to decide whether to buy a digital SLR or a sophisticated megazoom camera such as the 8-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30. The successor to the 5-megapixel FZ20, the FZ30 is also equipped with optical image stabilization, a solid feature set, and a 12X zoom Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with a 35mm-to-420mm focal range (35mm-camera equivalent). The FZ30 is far less expensive than a dSLR, for which you’d need two or more image-stabilized lenses to gain the same focal range. Though the dSLR would give you better performance, additional features, and better image quality, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 is a viable alternative for photographers who want maximum flexibility for a (relatively) small cash outlay.”
