DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the 5 megapixel Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LZ2, which features a 6x optical zoom lens and an Optical Image Stabilizer to combat camera shake.
“The LZ2 has several subtle features that aim to make handling more comfortable; a shallow right-hand grip, a curved structure on the front for the index and middle fingers, and small edge on the back for the thumb. With such a shallow angle of the grip, my hand felt a little cramped after an hour or so of on and off usage (and I don’t have overly large hands as some other users might). This camera will be best for 20 minutes or so of continuous shooting, but could extremely get uncomfortable after that. The lightweight construction will enable users to shoot easily with some level of control with just one hand, though two are recommended, of course.”

CNET have just published their review of the Canon Digital IXUS 700 digital camera (also known as the Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital ELPH).
“he Canon PowerShot SD500 is in many ways a lovely camera and in many ways a frustrating one. On the plus side, it has an exterior design that combines form and function more elegantly than any point-and-shoot we’ve ever tested. A Digic II-powered image-processing system enables the SD500 to snap a limitless stream of 7-megapixel photos at a respectable clip, and its start-up time is tops in its class. Unfortunately, the camera’s downside is also substantial. Severe fringing, hit-and-miss focus, and high noise even at lower ISO settings bedevil the SD500’s photos. In the end, this is a camera that we really enjoyed shooting with but whose weak photo quality ultimately disappointed us.”

Unmediated have published a review of the new Sanyo Xacti Digital Movie C5, which has 5 megapixels, 2 inch LCD screen and can record MPEG4 format movies with VGA resolution at 30 frames per second. The Sanyo Xacti Digital Movie C5 replaces the Sanyo Xacti C1 that I have previously reviewed.
“Kenyatta just got his hands on a Sanyo Xacti C5 and I’ve been non-stop bugging him for feedback. The Xacti is a hard-drive based camcorder that’s being used by some in the videoblogging community. I was literally about to order one on eBay, but Kenyatta told me to hold off- giving the camcorder a 3/5 (5/5 = best). So here’s our conversation and Kenyatta’s review of the C5.”

Globetechnology have reviewed the 5 megapixel Pentax Optio S50 compact digital camera. Thanks to Sanj for letting me know.
“As 5MP cameras go, this one is really nothing to write home about. I was amazed at how often, particularly indoors, I ended up with slightly blurry shots. This isn’t helped by the lack of an Auto-Focus assist light. There was no problem recognizing who the subjects were but the details expected from a 5MP, or even a 3MP for that matter, just weren’t there.”

DigiCamReview have just reviewed the 6 megapixel Konica Minolta DiMAGE G600 digital camera.
“The Konica Minolta Dimage G600 has some appealing qualities, most notable is the very good image quality and manual controls this compact 6 megapixel digital camera offers. The camera is compact, stylish, and very responsive - this enables you to capture the moment - instead of missing it. The camera has very good image quality, with especially saturated colours - however the camera is let down by image softness, poor indoor performance, and the limited length videos. The G600 is good value for money for a compact 6 megapixel digital camera. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a compact high resolution digital camera for mainly outdoor use.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have today reviewed the new 7 megapixel Olympus C-7070 Wide Zoom, which was announced at the CES show back in January.
“The lens produced sharp results throughout the zoom range except when stopped down to its smallest aperture, F11, where it was noticeably soft. It had noticeable barrel distortion at full wide angle, but no detectable pin cushioning at telephoto. There was a slight amount of chromatic aberration (purple fringing) in high-contrast areas at all focal lengths in normal exposures, but overexposure will intensify CA. The lens offers two macro settings, Macro and Super Macro; Super Macro allows you to focus as close as one inch, nearly filling the frame with an object the size of a dime!”

CNET have today reviewed the new 7 megapixel Olympus C-7070 Wide Zoom, which was announced at the CES show back in January.
” Although it shares a 7-megapixel sensor and key features with its stablemate, the C-7000, the Olympus C-7070 Wide Zoom is an entirely different beast. With an expansive 27mm-to-110mm zoom (35mm-camera equivalent), full manual controls, support for both xD and CompactFlash cards, and a macro mode good down to 1 inch, this looks like a photo enthusiast’s compact alternative to a digital SLR or an electronic-viewfinder-equipped camera. However, though priced in the same neighborhood as its dSLR and EVF competition, it offers only an optical viewfinder and a color LCD.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have just posted their review of the new 5 megapixel Konica Minolta Z5 digital camera.
“The image quality when using its 2560x1920 Fine mode was average for a camera in this class. Outdoors it produced nicely saturated images that showed proper exposure in most cases; only under extreme sunlight did it tend to over-expose the image. I did notice an average amount of noise in low contrast areas as well as CA (chromatic aberration - purple fringing) in high contrast areas, especially when using its Auto ISO setting. There were also some images that were a bit soft; there are adjustments for both sharpening and contrast that help fix the problem. Both our outdoor and indoor portraits were sharp, well exposed and skin tones were very natural.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have cast their critical eye over the new 6 megapixel Concord 6340z digital camera.
“Its 37-111mm (35mm-equivalent) zoom lens produced below-average results in our testing; very few of our test shots could be considered sharp. The quality one would expect from a 6-megapixel imager was not realized because of the marginal lens quality. That said, the 3x zoom lens does offer versatility in composing your shots, with its moderate wide angle being useful for interior shots and landscapes, while the telephoto range will bring your distant subjects closer. We notice average amount of barrel distortion at full wide angle, with slight pincushioning at full telephoto.”

DigiCamReview have just posted their review of the 4 megapixel, 8.3x optical zoom Nikon Coolpix 4800.
“Image quality is very good, the images have good colour, saturation, contrast and detail - with very little purple fringing. The camera did a good job focusing - although indoors it did occassionally struggle. Noise was controlled well. I didn’t notice any vignetting in the corners . There is an good range of image sizes although not much in the way of compression options. The macro mode is excellent. Auto white balance and metering seemed to be very good. Red-eye was controlled well. The movie mode is fairly average.”

DPReview have published their review of the 3 megapixel Canon PowerShot A510 digital camera.
“The build quality is excellent, the results - though probably a little ‘over-processed’ for purists (and almost all are in need of a little sharpening in post processing) are perfect for the target market; bright, colorful and contrasty. Our only serious complaints are to do with some aspects of the speed of operation - focus can struggle in low light at the long end of the zoom (sometimes taking up to two seconds to find its mark), the shot-to-shot time (when not in burst mode) feels very slow if you’re trying to grab shots quickly, and the flash recycle time is frankly unacceptable.”

Trusted Reviews have published the first online review that I have seen of the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z20.
“Picture quality is extremely good, with bright natural colours, lots of fine detail and very little lens distortion even at wide angle. There is a little bit of purple fringing on very high contrast edges, but it is not a major problem. Noise levels are very low at ISO 50, 100 and at 200 a smidgen is noticeable. At the maximum (ISO 320), noise is evident although it’s within acceptable limits. The camera’s exposure system copes well with unusual lighting such as scenes that are backlit and have high contrast, plus the fill-flash works well to brighten up dark foregrounds, although it can be a bit harsh on close range shots.”

CNET have just reviewed the 7 megapixel Pentax Optio750Z.
“Thanks to the recent spate of fully featured, pocket-friendly 7-megapixel cameras from Pentax, Olympus, Sony, and Canon, serious photographers don’t have to trade must-have capabilities for compact size. Pentax includes the fine-tuning control over exposure and focus that photo enthusiasts need, along with some stand-out features such as a flip-out swiveling LCD, a 3D stereoscopic shooting mode, and a time-lapse interval recording option. Unfortunately, mediocre performance and imaging artifacts in the photos seriously crimp the Pentax Optio 750Z’s upscale appeal.”

Photoxels have reviewed the 5 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 5600 that was announced at PMA in February.
“CA is minimal in everyday shots. It’s not too sunny here, but out of our high contrast shots, we found a couple with a bit of purple fringing at full image size. In the above photo, the corner delimited by the red square at top middle, and reproduced at 100% crop at bottom right, showed some purple fringing. At 4x6 in. prints, this should not be a problem at all and won’t show up.”
