DIWA member Photoxels have reviewed the new 10 megapixel Nikon D80 DSLR camera.
“The Nikon D80 is definitely the camera you want to “move up” to if you are using a family DSLR with some “missing” features. I really like the exceptional ergonomics of the Nikon D80; from the moment you pick the camera up, it feels right. A thorough read of The Nikon Guide to Digital Photography with the D80 (aka User Manual) is necessary to make the most of this versatile camera.”

PMA 2007: Sony have issued a press release about the new prototype Alpha DSLRs that were on show at PMA last week. “We need to further solidify our position in the digital SLR market. To do that, we must cater to varying degrees of customer requirements, and we are working on the second wave of products in order to expand the world of ‘?’,” said Toru Katsumoto, head of Sony’s AMC division responsible for digital SLR products. “Specifically, we are developing two new camera bodies targeted at higher market segments compared with the ‘?100’,” he added. You can see pictures from the show here.

CameraLabs have published their review of the new Nikon D40 entry level DSLR camera.
“The Nikon D40 is arguably one of the most sensible DSLRs released so far. Nikon’s sensibly targeted first-time DSLR owners with an affordable and easy to use product, and sensibly fitted it with a 6 Megapixel sensor which is more than sufficient for the vast majority of consumers. Anyone who’s into digital cameras understands Nikon’s choice of sensor, and it’s refreshing to find a company step back from the unnecessary upward spiralling of Megapixels.”

PMA 2007: Despite what seems like months of rumours, guesses, bad Photoshop mockups, leaks and dodgy Belgian websites, Canon did not announce a replacement for the EOS 30D DSLR at PMA. PhotographyBLOG ignored the rumours that were widely reported by many other websites and discussion forums in the run-up to the show, preferring to stick to the facts and the real news. This is the approach that I have taken since the site began 4 years ago, and the approach that I will continue with in the future. As well as the new EOS 1D Mk III, accessories and digital compacts which I’ve extensively covered before, Canon were celebrating 70 years as a company, and 20 years of EOS.

PMA 2007: Olympus were showing the prototype of their professional DSLR camera under glass at the show. Code-named the Olympus P-1 (this may not be the final name), Olympus haven’t released any firm details about the new camera, preferring to keep things close to their chests at the moment. A 2007 launch for the Olympus P-1 is highly probable though, with the new DSLR aiming to compete with the likes of the Nikon D200.

PMA 2007: Sony opened their PMA show with a press launch for two new Alpha DSLR prototypes and a selection of lenses. Details about the new DSLRs are sketchy to say the least. On display behind glass was a high-end prosumer model, apparently more advanced than the current A100 DSLR, and a professional level camera, with a pentaprism that looks like it came straight from a Pentax medium format camera. The Sony spokesperson was unclear about which model would be released first, but confirmed that one of them will definitely be released before the end of 2007. Also on show were 8 lenses (again mockups rather than production products) covering a wide range of focal lengths. These are all new Sony designs and not rebadged versions of old Konica Minolta lenses. I’ve posted 9 photos after the jump.

PMA 2007: The Nikon D40x DSLR camera was on show at today’s Sneak Peek event at PMA. As you’d expect with no external changes from the D40, it looks exactly the same as its predecessor! There’s a new 10 megapixel sensor, extended ISO range of 100-3200, and faster continuous shooting of 3fps. Also on show was the new 55-200mm VR lens, which was quite compact and light, matching the D40x well, although the lens does protrude quite a bit at full zoom.

PMA 2007: The Olympus E-510 DSLR camera was on show at today’s Sneak Peek event at PMA (so-called because a large number of exhibitors show off their wares to the press). I got 5 minutes of hands-on time with a working sample of the E-510, which feels smaller than it looks in the glossy brochure shots, but still large enough to hold comfortably. Tomorrow morning Olympus are organising a dawn trip to the desert, so more pictures of the E-510 and E-410 (and maybe some sample photos) to follow…

PMA 2007: The Olympus P-1 professional DSLR is on its way - that’s the message from Olympus ahead of this year’s PMA show, as official photos and a tentative “later this year” target for the DSLR camera have been released today. The much anticipated Olympus P1 was first shown in early prototype form at Photokina in the Autumn of 2006, so perhaps March 2007 was always going to be a little too early for the full launch. After news of the consumer E-510 and E-410 DSLRs yesterday, Olympus have sought to underline their committment to the professional side of the E-System by issuing these P-1 photos, which looks quite a lot different to the E-1, with a rotating/flip-out screen, chunky battery grip and lower height. There’s also news of the development of 4 new Zuiko Digital lenses, 3 of which feature the new Supersonic Wave Drive focusing system. Exciting times for pro-Olympus DSLR users, if you can bear to wait another 6 months or so…

Olympus Europe, USA and the E-System website are all currently running a teaser advert for two new Olympus DSLR cameras, which will apparently be unveiled on March 5th, just a few days before the PMA show in Las Vegas. The three ads gives very little away - could one of the featured cameras be the professional successor to the E-1 that was first shown in prototype form at Photokina last year? We will have all the news about the future of the E-System, so make sure to visit PhotographyBLOG tomorrow…

CNET have reviewed the Pentax K10D, which offers 10.2 megapixels, shake-reduction, dust removal system, 22-bit colour, three new shooting modes, 2.5 inch LCD screen and 11 point auto-focusing.
“A great feature set for the price, pro-level customization, and excellent photo quality make the Pentax K10D a bargain amateur dSLR. Only unremarkable performance holds it back from joining the pack leaders.”

PCMagazine have published their review of the new Nikon D40 entry level DSLR camera.
“In the realm of digital photography, it often seems that the most advanced and expensive gadgets are the first to include the most innovative and unique technologies. Surprisingly, in the last few years I’ve seen ease-of-use features usually found in lower-end point-and-shoot cameras popping up in higher-end models. This is particularly evident in Nikon’s low-end Digital SLR (single-lens reflex) camera, the Nikon D40, which offers the power of a professional shooter with an assortment of consumer-friendly features.”
