Samsung GX-1LSteves Digicams have published their review of the Samsung GX-1L DSLR, which offers 6-megapixels, five-point wide-area Auto Focus system, three-mode metering system and 8 scene modes.

“We liked the Pentax *ist DL when we reviewed it earlier this year, and we like what is essentially its clone, the Samsung GX-1L, equally well. With a price point that overlaps well into consumer digicam territory, the GX-1L offers a compelling choice to upgraders, providing dSLR versatility and better high ISO image quality in a lightweight and compact package.”

Nikon D200Imaging Resource have just reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Nikon D200 digital SLR camera.

“Nikon’s return to competitive form is complete. The Nikon D200 joins the D50, D70s, and D2x to take up second position in the ranks of the company’s most formidable SLR bodies, marking the fourth home run they’ve hit in the last two years. With only one qualifier, I can say that the D200 is worthy of both the praise and the price, and is a body that owners of Nikon glass have truly needed.”

Sony A100DPReview have just reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Sony A100 DSLR camera.

“The A100 is aimed at the ‘serious amateur’ market, however from a price point of view it doesn’t easily slot into one of the existing market segments. Depending on how you look at it the A100 is either an expensive entry-level digital SLR with an advanced set of features or a bargain in the higher segment (EOS 30D etc.), without a metal body and high speed shooting.”

Sony A100ephotozine have just reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Sony A100 DSLR camera.

“The 9-point autofocus system is quick and responsive, aided by the eye-start system which sets the camera into action as you bring your eye to the viewfinder. The furthest AF points from the centre are aligned with the classic ‘rule-of-thirds’ areas of the frame, which makes creative composition of off-centre subjects simple. Each AF point glows red when selected and they’re clear enough to see in both bright and dark conditions.”

Canon EOS 30DCameraLabs have just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.

“But it’s important to look at the 30D in context. It replaces the EOS 20D which was already an excellent camera. Certainly few if any complained about the 20D’s image quality, so as the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Consequently the 30D enjoys the same detailed, silky smooth images with very low noise even at high sensitivities.”

Pentax K100D DSLRePhotozine have the first online review of the new 6.1 megapixel Pentax K100D DSLR camera.

“An 11-point autofocus system allows for creative composition of off-centre subjects. The AF are not visible until one is elected, or the camera is focused, which I found a little disconcerting at first. When you get used to where all the points are this becomes less of a problem. Quite a wide area of the viewfinder is covered by these AF points which is great. When a point is selected, it lights up red and is clearly visible in all lighting conditions. Occasionally there can be quite a long pause between the camera focusing, and allowing you to take your shot in Single-Servo AF. I found this frustrating, especially when shooting moving subjects.”

Sony A100Popular Photography have just reviewed the new 10.2 megapixel Sony A100 DSLR camera.

“The 2.5-inch LCD on the A100 is among the brightest and sharpest we’ve seen, with a great viewing angle and automatic data display that switches from horizontal to vertical when the camera body is rotated (another trait borrowed from Maxxum DSLRs). The display button also quickly resizes fonts, and the four-way controller gives you quick access to the histogram exposure display or rapidly rotates the image.”

Panasonic DMC-L1Our friends over at DPNow have published a selection of sample images taken with a production version of the upcoming Panasonic DMC-L1 DSLR camera.

“The L1’s Leica Vario Elmarit 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 standard zoom lenses provided were mechanically and optically production standard, but one more firmware update was expected. I had some intermittent focus mechanism problems when trying to use this lens on an Olympus E500, which Panasonic attributed to the E500’s firmware (v.1.1 rather than the latest v.1.2) and the intermediate firmware in the lens. “

Olympus E-330DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the 7.5 megapixel, live preview Olympus E-330 DSLR camera.

“Naturally, the main selling point of this camera is the live view. The way in which Olympus have integrated this feature in the Olympus E-330 truly is unique. Fortunately, the latest firmware will now also enable the photographer to use the auto focus in combination with the macro live view. Meeting this demand proves to be a particularly clever move by Olympus. The opinions on live view turn out to be somewhat mixed. On one hand it can be put to excellent use, such as when working in high or low positions, as well as to focus accurately when capturing macro images. On the other hand, it isn’t exactly the goose with the golden eggs, especially not in the way it is used in this camera.”

“Like a mythical bird rising from the ashes of Konica Minolta, Sony’s first digital SLR, named the Alpha DSLR-A100, marks the company’s entry into the big leagues of digital still imaging. With a 10.2-megapixel CCD sensor, a bevy of convenience features, an updated version of Konica Minolta’s CCD-shift image stabilization, and a design that improves slightly on the Maxxum 5D, Sony has delivered a worthy competitor in the sub-$1,000 dSLR market.”

Samsung GX-1LDIWA member and Norwegian website digit.no have published their review of the Samsung GX-1L DSLR, which offers 6-megapixels, five-point wide-area Auto Focus system, three-mode metering system and 8 scene modes.

“With a name like Samsung, known to the photographic world as a manufacturer of low-end compacts, it can’t be easy to fight against mighty, established names like Canon, Nikon, Pentax og Olympus on the D-SLR arena. Nevertheless, Samsung is one of the fastest growing companies in the industry and I woun’t be surprised if they one day is a leading D-SLR brand. The GX-1L is the first baby from their marriage with Pentax. Basically, the GX-1L is a slightly modified version of the Pentax *ist DL and comes in a kit with two amazing zoom lenses; 18-55 mm and 50-200 mm. Branded Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon, but obviously identical to the Pentax versions, they both deliver outstanding optical performance at very competitive prices. The GX-1L has no major weaknesses, but lacks some of the most refined features found in more advanced D-SLRs. In most respects, the GX-1L matches its main competitors, even outperforms them in terms of a larger and brighter viewfinder, larger and more detailed LCD screen, USB 2.0 High Speed interface, AA battery compatibility, yet light weight and small dimensions. Although lens performance is outstanding, the image processing performance deteriorates the capabilities of the 6.1 MP CCD sensor when images are stored as JPEGs. If you stick to the RAW format, the GX-1L will provide first class images for its class and price range. My summary is that the Samsung GX-1L in kit with the two standard zoom lenses is a price bargain it is unwise to overlook.”

Pentax *ist DL2TrustedReviews have cast their critical eye over the 6 megapixel Pentax *ist DL2 digital SLR camera.

“With such a small camera there is of course the danger that handling could be compromised, but fortunately this is not the case. The DL2 only has a bare minimum of external controls and they are well spaced out so they’re not crowded. The handgrip is small compared to other DSLRs, but is comfortable to hold even for my very large hands. The sculpted shape is a definite improvement over the rather cramped grip of the *ist D, and a large thumb grip at the back makes for a very secure hold.”

Nikon D200Reuters are reporting that Nikon are “running at full tilt to meet robust demand” for its digital SLR cameras. Sales of the D50, D70s and D200 has produced a 35 percent year-on-year increase in April and May for the Japanese giant, beating its own growth estimates. Senior Managing Director Makoto Kimura also commented “In the film era there were mass-market SLR models selling at $300. So there are people out there that want to take pictures with a SLR that costs about that much. I don’t know when it will happen, but the next target after $500 is the $300 mark,” he said.” A DSLR for just $300 - whatever next?!
