DPReview have published a preview of the Canon 5D, a new 12.8 megapixel full-frame digital SLR camera..
“My initial description of the EOS 5D when compared to the EOS 20D was ‘chunkier’, and I still think that’s a fair comment. It’s actually not that much larger than the EOS 20D, about 8 mm (⅓ inch) wider and taller but thanks to a remolded and grip (which now has a finger hook) and its extra weight (125 g / 4.4 oz) the EOS 5D does create the impression that it is both more substantial and more robust. Other than this the EOS 5D does look remarkably similar to the EOS 20D, even the control layout on the rear of the camera is virtually identical. The intention of course is to tempt existing EOS 20D owners to upgrade with the least amount of fuss.”

Rob Galbraith are the third site today to share their initial impressions of the Canon EOS 5D.
”“The Canon EOS 5D looks to be everything I’ve been waiting for in a DSLR camera. If the image quality is everything that I anticipate from Canon, then I will most likely acquire two as soon as they’re available. The pixel count, buffer size, feature list and weight are all very appealing and the price makes acquiring one seem more like a buying a camera and less like buying a car.”“

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have published a preview with lots of glossy pictures of the Canon 5D, a new 12.8 megapixel full-frame digital SLR camera.
“Today we were invited to join Canon with their presentation of the 2nd digital wave that will hit the world. Amazing, how many products Canon have launched this year, every 4 days they have launched a new digital imaging product! During the presentation I was able to get my hands on the new Canon 5D digital SLR camera. Although it was only for a short moment I was able to get a first impression and the following article gives you a closer look at the already famous new Canon EOS 5D D-SLR. For those of you who already start ordering their own Canon 5D, the price in the Netherlands is set at EUR 3299,- including VAT. Expect the Canon EOS 5D digital reflex camera to be available on the market in September 2005.”

Luminous Landscape have published their first impressions of the Canon 5D, a new 12.8 megapixel full-frame digital SLR camera.
“In a nut-shell, the 5D is a 13 Megapixel full-frame DSLR. What sets it apart from any prior full-frame DSLR, such as the 1 Ds Series Canon’s or the now-defunct Kodak DCS 14n and Pro n models is that it is about the physical size of the current generation of 6 and 8 Megapixel cameras, as well as current film-based SLRs such as the Canon 1V. It’s the first high-resolution full-frame digital SLR that can make this claim. The price of course is the other differentiator. Though street price isn’t yet certain, it will likely be just slightly more than US $3,000, which makes it expensive in many people’s books, but a bargain compared to the Canon 1Ds MKII which is US $7,000, and the only other full-frame DSLR currently available.”

Digital Outback Photo have published their review of the 6 megapixel Konica Minolta Dynax 7D digital SLR camera.
“This was the first day we used the AS feature and we may need a bit more practice using AS for maximum benefit. But at the lower shutter speeds it is clear that AS works. At 1/125 sec the results are pretty close. If we have some more time we may revisit AS as part of our diary. Note: We are very much used to IS/VR on Canon/Nikon. The main advantage of stabilizing the lens is that also the viewfinder image gets stabilized as well.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the new entry-level Pentax *ist DL digital SLR camera. The Pentax *ist DL is a 6.1 megapixel DSLR which features a 2.5 LCD screen and light 16 ounce body.
“The Pentax *ist DL is a wonderful camera to work with. It’s nicely small, but certainly not too small. The camera also feels solid despite of its light weight. After activating the camera, the Pentax *ist DL is almost immediately ready to shoot and the buttons are within reach. The viewfinder functions fine and reviewing the images on the giant monitor is a joy. Also the menu benefits from the large monitor. No remarks can be made about the excellent menu, only that I would have liked to see the light metering and auto focus option outside the menu. “

PCMagazine have published their review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.
“Canon and Nikon have long been head-to-head competitors in the SLR (single-lens reflex) camera market, and that fierce rivalry has carried over into the digital-SLR market as well. The $1,499 Canon EOS 20D body is Canon’s latest counter to Nikon’s best-selling $999 Nikon D70 body, which was an Editors’ Choice winner in the digital SLR category (and Nikon’s answer to Canon’s $900 Digital Rebel). In addition to offering a higher resolution and better construction than the D70, the EOS 20D is a stellar performer capable of capturing spectacular images.”

Photographic Magazine have published their review of the new Nikon D70s DSLR camera.
” The camera has a good, solid feel, and the controls are well located and easy to use. The large LCD monitor is excellent; I could read it without my reading glasses. It is a pain to have to scroll through the LCD monitor menus every time I want to switch from single-shot AF to continuous AF or vice versa, but otherwise the D70s was a pleasure to use. It’s an excellent entry-level AF SLR, and provides enough features and performance to serve as a backup camera for pros.”

“Digital-SLR enthusiasts and even pro shooters will be rendered speechless when they pick up Nikon’s top-of-the-line D-SLR, the 12.3-megapixel Nikon D2X ($4,999.95 list). After the oooohs and aaaahs (and recovery from the shock of its very high price), there will be a long pause as they analyze all the features available on the D2X’s body (the camera doesn’t come with either a kit lens or a built-in flash).”

PCMagazine have published their review of the Nikon D50, a new affordable 6.1 megapixel digital SLR.
“When it comes to the digital SLR market, Nikon has always focused on high-end, professional models like the D2X. While the company has not ignored consumer D-SLRs, its primary mission has always been serving pro shooters. That is why we were pleasantly surprised by the introduction of the D50 and what seems to be more of a commitment to the consumer. The D50 has a great price and includes helpful, user-friendly features. These, combined with excellent quality and performance, made it easy to single out this camera as our new Editors’ Choice for D-SLRs.”

PCMagazine have just posted their review of the Fuji FinePix S3 Pro digital SLR.
“Like the Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro before it, the new Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro is built on the Nikon N80 film SLR chassis—one of the most enjoyable cameras to hold. Because the N80 is a plastic-bodied camera, however, it’s not as rugged as other pro cameras, such as the Nikon D2X, which has a harder magnesium-alloy body. It’s just one of the ways in which the S3 Pro seems to exhibit an identity problem: Is it an expensive consumer digital SLR or a cheaper alternative to the high-priced pro D-SLRs? That’s a question that you may have to answer for yourself, depending on your needs.””

Imaging Resource have published their review of the Nikon D50, a new affordable 6.1 megapixel digital SLR.
“Now, the Nikon D50 extends most of the capabilities of the D70 down to a lower price point and in a somewhat simplified format that seems intended to capture the hearts, minds, and pocketbooks of the vast “family photographer” market. As you’ll see in the review that follows, the Nikon D50 provides a superb combination of ease of use and advanced features, in a trimmer, more compact package than the previous D70. As the digital SLR market continues to move more mainstream, the Nikon D50 appears perfectly poised to capture a broad segment of it, providing great ease of use without “dumbing down” its capabilities for more advanced users.”

DigitalCameraInfo have just posted their review of the Fuji FinePix S3 Pro digital SLR.
“Fuji has done some very smart engineering to address a very real need in digital photography. Unfortunately, the FinePix S3 blends its uniquely impressive image quality with glacially slow shooting and writing speeds, and mediocre autofocus – it’s unsure in low light, and slow all the time. This results in some very strong limitations that many users will not be able to look past. But for some, the S3 will offer a formidable alternative that is superior to any other camera currently on the market.””
