Canon is showcasing a range of digital cameras and printers at PhotoPlus Expo 2012. Opening today and running until Saturday, this year’s PhotoPlus Expo is taking place at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Canon products on display include the Canon EOS 6D digital SLR camera, various Powershot models — the G15, S110, and SX50 HS —, three new imagePROGRAF large-format printers and the PIXMA PRO-10 and PIXMA PRO-100 inkjet printers. The booth (#119) includes a hands-on shooting set where visitors can try Canon’s latest DSLR cameras and Cinema EOS equipment.

On 5th November at Kings Place, London, conceptual fine art photographer Tim Flach will talk about his latest book More Than Human. In this book, he takes this into new points of inquiry with surprising portraiture of creatures ranging from exquisite pupae, to the world’s largest cat, to intimate scenes of bonobos and other primates. The lecture starts at 7pm, tickets are available online for £9.50.

The event is part of the PhotoVoice Lecture series and the ‘Words on Monday’ series.

Photographs from the UK’s first ever iPhoneography course, run at Kensington and Chelsea College, are being showcased to the public for the first time in an exhibition. A hundred of the best images from the course,‘iPhoneography: An Introduction to Photography with the iPhone,’ are now set to make their debut in the forthcoming exhibition ‘Apped to the Max’, running from November 5-11 at the college’s Chelsea Centre Gallery in Hortensia Road, SW10 0QS. The gallery is open to the public from 9am-7pm Monday to Thursday and 9am-4pm on Friday.

UK photography agency Balcony Jump has launched a series of photography workshops. This two?day intensive workshop is designed for photographers of all stages in their career, who are looking to improve their photographic, marketing and business skills. The course will cover many areas of photography from fashion to still life, with something for everyone trying to improve or break into the photographic industry. The workshop will be held on 8-9 December 2012 at a premier photographic studio in London, with all equipment, lunch and refreshments included on both days. Attendance is limited to 15 people.

X-Rite has announced its schedule of free November 2012 webinars. Taking place from 10am and 1pm EST on 6th November, the first webinar is entitled “Professional Monitor Calibration for Still & Video.” This brief session will review how to access and utilize the video presets in i1Profiler software and will briefly look at use of X-Rite’s ColorCheckers in the video footage as a visual reference. The second webinar, “Simply Amazing Color. Take control of your monitor, printer and camera!” starts at 3pm and 7pm EST on 8th November, and gives users the opportunity to ask questions and understand each solution in detail so they can make the right decision on what ColorMunki family solution is for them. Nikon UK and NME have teamed up for the NME Music Photography Awards with Nikon exhibition at the famous Getty Images Gallery in London. The exhibition will feature the best images from this year’s music photography competition which was open for entry during the festival season this summer to both amateurs and professional photographers. Now in its third year, the competition attracted more images than ever before, with the judges having to select winners from over 7,000 entries. With a Nikon 1 camera kit up for grabs for the amateur categories and a D800 digital SLR kit for the professional category, each of the category winners will also get to meet NME’s Picture Editor and experience a photography master class with an NME photographer. The best two will then be chosen to shoot a gig for NME and one eventual winner will get to shadow an NME photographer. All winners will be announced in NME magazine, issue 27th October 2012. The exhibition at the Getty Images Gallery opens on 7th November and runs until 1st December.

Online photography business gurus Mark Cleghorn and Kenny Martin have launched ‘Business Class’ - a brand new webinar-style monthly learning programme aimed at helping portrait photographers trade more profitably. Last month, Samsung issued a call for every Briton called David Bailey to meet up in London and take part in a photography project. The initiative was successful as 142 David Baileys came together to meet their namesake, iconic fashion and celebrity photographer David Royston Bailey. A major retrospective exhibition of work by Czech photographer, Jitka Hanzlová, will have its only UK showing in The Robert Mapplethorpe Photography Gallery at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery this autumn. The exhibition - on show from 17 October 2012 to 3 February 2013 - brings together around 100 works spanning her career from the early 1990s to the present day.

The Royal Photographic Society’s 155th International Print Exhibition will be at Rook Lane from Saturday 17th November 2012 – Saturday 5th January 2013. The exhibition showcases a wide range of genres and styles of photography, with cutting-edge prints being shown alongside traditional work - from the artistic to documentary, from portraiture to natural history. The exhibition features professional, student and amateur photographers from around the world. The prints have been selected by a panel of well-qualified photographers from different backgrounds. Rook Lane Arts Trust is an arts venue and exhibition space in the heart of Frome, Somerset. At an auction held yesterday at Swann Galleries, a set of Edward S. Curtis’s magnum opus, The North American Indian, complete with 20 text volumes and 20 folios, was sold at $1.44 million dollars—more than any other single lot auctioned off at Swann in its 70 year history. Daile Kaplan, Swann Vice President and Director of Photographs & Photobooks, said, “We were very pleased to have sold this iconic work by a major 20th century artist. The price reflects the rarity and beauty of this American masterpiece and the interest in photobooks as an artform.”

Hall Place, situated in Bexley, Kent, is this autumn welcoming a unique photography exhibition; Illuminated World. Opening October 6, it showcases local man, Arthur Boswell’s (1880-1966) rare collection of early Victorian photography. Visitors will be taken on a fascinating journey of people and places from African plains, Norwegian fjords to Italian cities, contrasted with Bexley and the local area all as they were a century ago. Illuminated World will provide a magical encounter of life in Victorian times and an appreciation of the customs and cultures that would have enchanted observers during an era when people were travelling more than ever before. Visitors can also learn about photographic techniques of the time with original apparatus on display. Unearthed from the town’s local archive, this is the first time the images created from original glass lantern slides have been on show to the public and the selection represents only a fraction of the total of some 14,000 images. Admission is £7 for adults, £5 for under 16s and £20 for families.

The World Photography Organisation (WPO) has announced the inaugural Student Focus conference dedicated to the subject of photography education, The World Photo Educators’ Symposium. Taking place at Photokina, Cologne, Germany from the 22-23 September, the conference will bring together leading professors of photography from across Europe and the US to discuss the future of photography education. Executive Director of the US-based Society of Photographic Education (SPE), Virginia Morrison, commented: “We are looking forward to a rich conversation that will include such topics as students, teaching and making art; online learning; thinking digital; curriculum; the Internet; impact of photographic imagery; and community and collaboration.”

The next Magnum Professional Practice seminar will be held from13-14th October in Brighton, England. In this two day event, leading figures of the photographic industry will deliver presentations and advice on the best means in engaging with and the realities of working in their sectors. Confirmed speakers include David Birkitt, Jessica Crombie, Celia Davies, Harry Hardie, Diane Smyth, Rebecca Swift and Peter Marlow.
