Arles Photography Open Salon at Galerie Huit is an International Photography Open Call designed to showcase cutting-edge contemporary and emerging photography from around the world. This is “an exceptional opportunity to exhibit in Arles during and alongside the renowned Les Rencontres d’Arles photography festival, and have exposure for almost 3 months, in the magnificent settings of Galerie Huit,” the organisers say. In 2012 the Arles exhibition in Galerie Huit will run from 2nd July – 23rd September 2012. The theme of this years Photography Open Salon 2012 is ‘An Eye for an Ear‘. Bob Books have announced the return of Photobook Month this June. Hosted at Hasselblad Studio in Shoreditch, London, the series of four evening events will feature expert speakers who will be sharing their own take on photobooks – from what makes a beautifully designed book, to a run-down of the best photobooks of all time. The guest speakers include Martin Parr, Marianne Taylor, Mike Trow and Jeremy Leslie. Bob Books’ General Manager Ibolya Németh said: “We’re delighted to have pulled together some of the biggest names in our industry to create four not-to-be-missed events. We want to celebrate photobooks in all their forms and the best way to do this is to invite photographers, designers and photobook lovers to join us over four fantastic evenings in June.” The lectures will be taking place on 6th, 12th, 20th and 26th June. To celebrate Sony’s sponsorship of the World Photography awards, Sony UK will be hosting a free photography seminar on 18th April. Taking place from 7.30pm – 9.30pm at The Wellcome Collection, 183 Euston Road, London, NW1 2BE, the seminar features a panel of experts who will share their insights into the intricacies of the art of photography. The FOTO8 Summershow is back this summer (7th July – 19th August) for its fifth annual celebration of photography. The Show provides an international window for new, emerging and established talent and the stories they have captured. Photographers of all levels are encouraged to enter – the only remit is that the images should provide a window on life, convey powerful stories and evoke questions. The deadline for entries is 14th May. For collectors, the Summershow provides a chance to invest in new photography with prices for prints starting at £75. Of the 3,000 photographs usually entered, just 150 will be carefully selected for display in the Summershow and offered for sale. A panel of internationally respected judges will select an image to be Best in Show for which there is a £2,000 prize. The winner will be announced at the FOTO8 Summershow party, on 6th July.

The Society of International Nature and Wildlife Photographers have announced a new photography workshop. Attendees will learn about the nature photographers’ code of practice, the secrets of photographing birds of prey, close-up and macro shooting in the field, getting exposure and composition right with fast-moving subjects, and more. Focus On Imaging has released official visitor statistics for this year’s show. The total number of attendees was 37,684 which, according to the organisers, made for a very busy show floor across all of the four days. Stars of the show included the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, the Fujifilm X-Pro1 (read review), the Nikon D800 and the Olympus OM-D E-M5. Alongside these exciting new products, many of the exhibitors at this year’s show presented an array of talks, seminars and demonstrations on a wide range of subjects.

X-Rite has announced its schedule of March 2012 webinars. The first online seminar, starting Wednesday, 28th March, 11:00 AM EDT and 1:00 PM EDT and hosted by Joe Brady, is entitled “Image Edits and Enhancements in Lightroom 4.” In this webinar, Joe will explore both basic and advanced image editing techniques and focus on the new editing capabilities offered in Lightroom 4. The other webinar, entitled “Creating the Mood with Texture, Color, and Sharpness,” will feature educator, photographer and author Katrin Eismann, who will share a number of colour management, editing, and enhancement techniques that photographers can use in their digital workflow. From 19 May 2012 The Photographers’ Gallery will present Burtynsky: Oil, a major solo exhibition of works by renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky. Showcasing over thirty images the exhibition will be divided into three sections: Extraction and Refinement describes the process of distillation via aerial views of oil fields, drills and rigs spread across miles of land, networks of pipelines travelling through the countryside and factories constructed as mazes of metal tubes. Transportation and Motor Culture, as made possible through petrol, is depicted in complex images of highway interchanges and connections, panoramas of endless rows of vehicles lined-up in vast parking lots and of car enthusiasts gathered in masses to take part in related events and sporting competitions. The End of Oil displays the consequences of its use as considered by the artist. The Photographers’ Gallery is located at 16 – 18 Ramillies Street, London W1F 7LW.

In June 2012, a wide range of London’s most celebrated venues will play host to a world-class, city-wide celebration of photography, as the London Festival of Photography returns for its second year. Encompassing documentary, street and conceptual photography, the festival will comprise 18 exhibitions and 40 events, including workshops, talks and screenings. Exhibitions will vary in style and theme, as the organisers are looking to present a comprehensive programme of photographic disciplines showcasing work from both established and emerging photographers. The festival exhibitions will be focused around the King’s Cross, Bloomsbury & Fitzrovia areas, in venues including the British Library, Guardian Gallery, British Museum, Museum of London, V&A and Tate Modern among others.

For the past six years, photographer Katherine Green has been documenting the 1948 British Olympic Team. Her images and oral histories are presented for the first time in a UK touring exhibition. 1948 Olympians is due to be on display at 20-?21 Visual Arts Centre from 10 March to 16 June. Led by MPA president Paul Cooper (pictured) and sponsored by Epson who will show the workflow to fine prints, the seminars are presented by Colin and Linda Buck and each features a top regional name. After morning coffee, at 11.30am the guest photographer will stage a live studio portrait shoot with a chance for hands-on participation. Professional photo printing lab theprintspace has announced that it will host the awards ceremony & exhibition of the Professional Photographer of the Year (PPOTY) 2011 Awards. Organised by Professional Photographer Magazine, the competition was open to digital submissions by photographers from the UK and those across the globe, and there were 13 different categories to compete in, such as The Wild World, Street Photography, Still Life and Breaking the Mould. At the awards ceremony, a winner and runner-up will be appointed in each category as well as an overall winner, who will receive the Professional Photographer of the Year title. In addition, the best portfolio will also be recognised and awarded. The Fine Art Society Contemporary has announced an exhibition entitled Resistance: Working Against the Camera. All of the artists selected for the exhibition resist the normal parameters of the photographic medium, either by inventing their own cameras, destroying them or creating unique camera-less photograms. The list of exhibiting artists include Steven Pippin (UK), Idris Khan (UK), Adam Fuss (US), Rob and Nick Carter (UK), Christopher Bucklow, Janet Laurence (Australia) and Edgar Lissel (Germany).
