World Photography Organisation (WPO), an acclaimed London-based initiative that provides a global platform for photography, is coming to New York to engage the city’s vibrant photography community with exhibitions, workshops, and talks led by world renowned practitioners in the photographic field. WPO has partnered with the Chelsea Art Museum who will serve as the host venue for all activities from October 13 through November 12, 2011. The IRIS Nights lecture series, offered by The Annenberg Space for Photography, is now marking its 100th evening on September 29 with curator/gallery owner David Fahey and Mark McKenna of the Herb Ritts Foundation. Over the past two years, the series has served over 16,000 photography enthusiasts. Among the presenters have been celebrity portraitist Douglas Kirkland, who gave the very first lecture; fine art photographer Catherine Opie; photojournalist Steve McCurry, known for his photo of an Afghan refugee girl with strikingly vibrant eyes; Los Angeles’ own Gil Garcetti; environmental photographer Clyde Butcher; celebrity and beauty photographer Matthew Rolston; Director of Photography of National Geographic Magazine David Griffin; blind, underwater photographer Bruce Hall; photographer and rock musician Nikki Sixx; legendary sports photographers Neil Leifer and Walter Iooss, as well as Arctic photographer Paul Nicklen. The inaugural London Photo Festival will be held from 27-29 October 2011 in The Crypt, Borough High St, London SE1 1JA. Providing amateur, enthusiast and semiprofessional photographers with the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work while also gaining valuable professional feedback, the London Photo Festival is co-organised by the founders of Abitoffthemapp Photography and HCK Photography. Held on 24 September 2011 at the IHM Retreat Center, 50 Mt Carmel Rd, Santa Fe, the seminars are part of a special retreat-style photographic conference called Portfolio Bootcamp. Scenes from the Art World is a major exhibition of photographs by Dafydd Jones, hosted by the Idea Generation Gallery in London. “A leading pioneer in society photography, Dafydd Jones has been photographing key art world names for the past three decades,” the organisers say. “His social reportage is a visual record of the art world’s transformation from small and unknown gallery launches of the nineteen eighties to the large scale celebrity haunts of the contemporary art market.” On show from 6-16 October, the exhibition features photos of Lucian Freud, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Jay Jopling, David Hockney, Nicholas Serota and Gavin Tuck as seen through the lens of Dafydd Jones. Ilford has announced an exclusive offer for photographers attending the upcoming PhotoPlus Expo (PPE) and WPPI NYC event on 27-29 October. The company will offer a free 16x20-inch print on Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk paper to the first 100 professional photographers that submit their favourite image to the company’s secure FTP site, and follow that submission with a confirmation e-mail by 24 September. The image should be transferred as the highest possible quality JPEG, rendered in Adobe RGB or sRGB at a minimum of 300dpi, and not exceed 20 inches in the longer dimension. The Made in Polaroid exhibition features more than 60 pieces of art created by a mix of artists, designers, photographers, actors and musicians. Hosted by Phillips de Pury & Company, NYC, the exhibition runs until 14th September. Participating artists include fashion photographers Patrick Demarchelier and Steven Klein, designers Cynthia Rowley and Phillip Lim and actors James Franco and Viggo Mortensen, among many others.
