Eastman Kodak Company announced today that it will retire its Kodachrome colour film this year, concluding its 74-year run as a photography icon. While Kodachrome, which was born in 1935, was not the world’s first colour film using a subtractive method - brands like Gasparcolor had been around for a couple of years by then -, it was unquestionably the first commercially viable one, which put an end to the rule of additive processes like Autochrome or Dufaycolor that had dominated the colour film/plate market for the first couple of decades of the twentieth century. Kodachrome went on to become an iconic film used by many great photographers working for National Geographic and other publications. However, sales have declined dramatically in recent years, as people went digital or turned to newer films. Kodak claims that today it represents “just a fraction of one percent” of their total sales of still-picture films. Steve McCurry, the photojournalist who captured the legendary portrait of the Afghan girl on Kodachrome a quarter of a century ago, will have the privilege of shooting one of the last rolls.

In the run-up to the widely anticipated launch of its first Micro FourThirds camera, Olympus is running a teaser campaign that focuses on the 50th anniversary of its PEN series of half-frame 35mm film cameras. PEN cameras were the brainchild of Yoshihisa Maitani, whose aim was to design a high-quality photographic tool that did not cost more than a month’s wage and was as portable and easy to use as a pen. The PEN series used standard 35mm film but took frames that measured only 18x24mm, i.e. half the size of the most widespread frame size on 35mm film. This and other engineering solutions have made these cameras extremely small and lightweight, which contributed to their massive success (17 million units sold worldwide). The current teaser campaign makes it clear that the new Micro Four Thirds camera will be modeled on the PEN series, as far as its outer appearance is concerned.

According to Kodak, they now recycle 84% of their own disposable cameras in the USA, which is claimed to be “the highest rate of recycling of any consumer product “.

Although it seemed that Patriarch Partners had won the auction for Polaroid, a judge has ruled that the top two bidders be given a second chance to submit improved bids. This comes after complaints by Polaroid’s creditors that the bidding had been flawed. Polaroid had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2008, and despatched the last shipment of instant film to a New Jersey-based wholesale distributor last month.

Kodak Ektar 100, an extraordinarily fine-grained colour negative film introduced at Photokina 2008, is now available in 120 size. Kodak announced this new emulsion just before Photokina, saying at first that it would only be manufactured in 35mm format. In February 2009, Kodak changed their minds and unveiled their plan to launch Ektar 100 for medium format as well, arguing that “the response to the introduction of EKTAR 100 Film has been amazing, with many requests to make the new film available in medium format”. At the time of this announcement, Kodak promised that Kodak Ektar 100 in 120 format would hit the shelves in April - and they have kept their promise. The 5-roll 120 Pro Pack is now in stock in a number of Calumet stores across the USA, retailing for $17.49.

If you have ever wanted to shoot with a camera that was built by yourself, but a lack of manual dexterity has prevented you from being able to do so, now’s your chance to fulfill your dream. This do-it-yourself camera promises to be just as easy to assemble as a Kinder Surprise toy, and fully functional to boot.
