Bonhams is to sell the Leica camera with which Russian photographer Yevgeni Khaldei took Raising a Flag over the Reichstag, one of the most famous photographs of World War II.  Khaldei’s image was taken on 2 May 1945 shortly after the Reichstag had finally fallen.  It is a restaging of the moment when Red Army fighters had first flown the flag over the building two days earlier before the Germans fought back and dislodged them. The camera that was used to take this photographt is being offered at Bonhams Leica Centenary Sale in Hong Kong on 30 November and is estimated at £230,000-340,000. Bonhams  Head of scientific instruments Jon Baddeley said, “It is a great privilege to be selling a  camera with such evocative associations. Raising a Flag over the Reichstag is a defining image of victory over evil which affected people deeply at the time and has continued to resonate for later generations.”

Three design students at Royal College of Art, London, have teamed up for a fun project about creating photography filters out of... sugar. "The Lomo Filter Kreator Kit is reintroducing the art of using photographic filters and gives the user full creative control," says project manager Morten Grønning Nielsen. "Having three silicon trays, one for flat filters, one for gradients and one for vignettes, the user can create filters in unlimited colours and compositions. The process is outrageously simple, using a special sugar called Isomalt, and sugarcolours, the filters can be created in a household microwave or oven. If they scratch they can be remolded into a new filter or even consumed. Making one filter takes about 2 minutes to create and 10 minutes to cool down. Using our kit, you could make around 50 filters for $10 worth of isomalt." To learn more, visit the project's home page on Behance.

Following the launch of its Obscura by Ilford Pinhole Photography Kit, which includes a pinhole camera, starter packs of black and white film and paper, as well as a simple Exposure Calculator and Instruction Book; Ilford has now made the camera available to buy as a single item without the film and paper included. The camera is precision cut and formed from expanded PVC, and is made of two interlocking sections. The photographic medium is loaded into the bottom section in darkroom conditions, and then held in place by sliding in the top section, which locks into place by use of magnets. The top section of the camera also holds the stainless steel chemically etched 0.3mm pinhole in place. Designed for 4x5 inch film or paper, the camera is 87mm focal length giving wide-angle images. The smaller pack still contains the Exposure Calculator, an empty film box to store exposed materials, Instruction Book, and a set of stickers. The new item is available now in the UK, with US availability slated for March.

One hundred years ago, Oskar Barnack created the very first Leica, the Leitz Camera, later known as the Ur-Leica. An employee of the Leitz Werke Wetzlar and a photography pioneer, Barnack invented and constructed the first stills camera to shoot 24×36mm frames on 35mm in 1914. Company archives dating from March 1914 show that Barnack originally gave his compact and highly portable prototype camera the name ‘Lilliput’. The original is still in the possession of Leica Camera AG, together with the negatives and prints of the first exposures captured with the Ur-Leica – which include pictures from a 1914 summer trip Ernst Leitz to the United States. While the Ur-Leica itself never went into mass production due to the outbreak of the Great War, the concept revolutionised photography, with the manufacturing of the first "actual" Leica beginning in 1925.
