A new exhibition of Norman Parkinson’s images of childhood, ‘Age of Innocence’, is currently on show at Dimbola Lodge, Isle of Wight. Running until 3rd July, the exhibition offers a fresh insight into his development as an artist and his eclectic choice of subjects. In her introduction to the catalogue, Fay Weldon writes: “Parkinson, like his confrères Bailey, Duffy and Donovan, is mostly known for his spectacular fashion photography, but as with these other great photographers, ‘the fashion shoot’ was only a part of their work. That was what earned them money: not necessarily what most satisfied the keen aesthetic eye of the photographer. In this particular collection of images, all relating one way or another to childhood, Parkinson combines the techniques of photojournalism – catch the moment as it flies – à la Cartier Bresson and Lartigue, with an Irving Penn-like sense of formality.”

The first ever full-career retrospective of the legendary British photographer Brian Duffy will open July 8th at Idea Generation Gallery. Together with Terence Donovan and David Bailey, Duffy is recognised as one of the innovators of “documentary” fashion photography, a style that revolutionised the fashion industry. He produced an extraordinary body of work but destroyed most of his negatives and transparencies in 1979. “Featuring more than 160 images painstakingly rediscovered by Duffy’s son after years of searching through archives and publications around the world, this exhibition has truly risen from the ashes,” the organisers say. Running until 28th August, the Duffy exhibition is presented by Idea Generation Gallery, 11 Chance Street, London E2 7JB. Admission is free.

Point of Interest is an upcoming exhibition of images taken by Magnum photographer Peter Marlow. The twenty-seven colour photographs and ten black-and-white prints are from a body of work comprising several thousand photographs that have been made alongside major projects. “It is photojournalism turned inside out, where the geography of where he is in the world, and the narrative context, becomes an irrelevant and unnecessary detail,” the organisers say. “The title Point of Interest is surely ironic – these images capture the overlooked, the abandoned, the derelict and the detritus of contemporary life and would rarely be the focus or centre of anyone’s point of interest. It is Marlow who places them centre stage in a sequence of masterly but disturbing photographs.” Running from 24 May - 2 July 2011, the exhibition is hosted by the Wapping Project Bankside gallery, 65a Hopton Street, London, SE1 9LR.

He regularly walks up to complete strangers on the streets of Warsaw, and asks for permission to take their portraits in order to create a unique gallery, a photographic record of urban fashion in the 2010s. “Street portraits are intoxicating,” Majgier says. “This time roles reverse and instead of being hired by clients, this is me who has the privilege of picking those who just have that something and would agree to be photographed.” To learn more, visit the project’s website via the link below.

Opening on 14th April at the Dash Gallery, 172 Duane Street, New York City, the exhibition will run for two weeks.
