Held in The Viewfinder Photography Gallery in Brixton, Constructs, Spectacle and Self is a group exhibition by London-based photographers Kerry Clark, Kelly Brown and Catlin Harrison. Running until 13 February, the exhibition features new work by the trio, including Harrison’s self-portraits created using a flatbed scanner, Clark’s photographs made using Victorian photographic processes, and Brown’s images of herself posing “as a range of real and imagined historical ancestors”. The Viewfinder Gallery is located inside Brixton Village Market, 52 Brixton Village, London.

Natural Habitats by Massimo Vitali comprises seventy photographs, spanning from 2004 to 2009. Vitali first worked as a photojournalist in the 1970s and then later as a camera operator. In the more recent past, his interests have turned to artistic photography. Since 2007 Vitali has modified his perspective, shifting between an architectural background.

The Book of Destruction is a new exhibition by the award-winning German photographer, Kai Wiedenhöfer. Opening at the Mosaic Rooms in west London on 28 January 2011, Wiedenhöfer witnesses and records the destruction of Gaza’s buildings and the injuries inflicted on its inhabitants during the Israeli offensive in 2009, known as Cast Lead.

As a serving soldier in the British Army, Bran Symondson became fascinated by the Afghan National Police (ANP), their ethos and their daily existence in the war with the Taliban. New York Sleeps is an exhibition of photographer Christopher Thomas, to be held at The Wapping Project Bankside gallery from 12th January to 26th February. Christopher Thomas is a German photographer using a custom-made large-format camera, Polaroid film and long exposures. The exhibition features 30 large-scale cityscapes, devoid of people, carrying an air of “19th century tranquility while hinting at a cryptic, apocalyptic ending”. The Wapping Project Bankside is a London gallery focusing on lens-based media, located at 65a Hopton Street.

Top UK photojournalists David Burges and James Fraser have launched a new training business called Blink Photography Courses, aimed at sharing the secrets of their trade with everyone from novices to pros. Blink Photography Courses will welcome its first guests at the beginning of March 2011, offering a selection of courses, from classroom-based beginners sessions for compact-wielding novices, to multi-day courses focusing on picturesque parts of the UK and Europe. On 2nd December, award-winning 29-year-old photojournalist Anastasia Taylor-Lind will be in conversation with writer and gallerist Laura Noble, where she will discussing her experiences on becoming a photojournalist and best practice within the field. Rapidly becoming one of Britain’s most promising talents, Anastasia is now based in the Middle East, where she works for clients such as GEO, Marie Claire, and The Sunday Times magazine. The lecture/conversation is organised by PhotoVoice, and will take place from 7.30pm at the Conway Hall, South Place Ethical Society, 25 Red Lion Square, London. Photographs of some of the biggest names in 20th century English literature by Mark Gerson, are for auction at Bonhams. In a career that spanned 40 years Gerson photographed all the great names in British literature including William Golding, Walter de la Mare, Roald Dahl, John Osborne, and Salman Rushdie.  Photographs of all these figures are in the sale together with one of the American writer James Baldwin (above). The photographs are all signed by Mark Gerson and are priced variously at between £400 and 1,500. The auctioneer’s Books, Maps and Manuscripts sale will be held in London on 23 November.

East Central Gallery is going to host the first London solo exhibition by photographer David Adika. Titled “Oululu”, the exhibition opens to the public on 20th November, and runs until 23rd December. Oululu will present some twenty photographs and two prints, which will be displayed in the different rooms of the gallery as a complex installation by the artist. The images vary in sizes and will either standalone or be grouped, on pastel coloured walls. East Central Gallery is located at 23 Bateman’s Row, London EC2A 3HH.

Mick Rock - Rock: Music is a retrospective of the legendary photographer’s work documenting the most outrageous moments, people and legends in music history. Celebrated as ‘The Man Who Shot the 70s’, Mick Rock launched his career in 1972 with his portrait of an unknown David Bowie and spent the next four decades capturing the most fascinating and exciting characters in rock music. The sequel to David’s highly successful Chasing the Light DVD, Photography in the Raw is a 90 minute photographic tutorial, shot in full HD, from many locations around the UK and abroad. Beginning Wednesday, 15 December 2010, the Norton Museum of Art will explore the most basic aspects of photography in Stare: The Pleasures of the Intensely Familiar and the Strangely Unexpected. The exhibition gathers works that are by turns “intricate, outré, opaque, puzzling, and perverse”, created by seven photographers and other artists of “strikingly different sensibilities and concerns”.  They are: Diane Arbus (1923-1971); John Coplans (1920-2003); Walker Evans (1903-1975); Vik Muniz (b. 1961); J.D. Okhai Ojeikere (b. 1930); Ed Ruscha (b. 1937); and Taryn Simon (b. 1975)  The Norton Museum is located at 1451 S. Olive Avenue in West Palm Beach and is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00am to 5:00pm, Sunday, 1:00 to 5:00pm. General admission is $12 for adults, $5 for visitors aged 13-21, and free for members and children under 13.

Mute is an upcoming exhibition of haunting dog portraits by Martin Usborne at East London gallery theprintspace. The collection consists of eight large-scale prints of dogs looking out of car windows. theprintspace’s Cathy Eck said, “This exhibition is an unusual treat for dog lovers and photography fans alike, with a really impressive collection of images. Olympic Dreams is an exhibition by James Dodd that introduces viewers to the City of Sheffield Diving Team and their youth development programme, which works alongside the nations preparations to develop our sporting elite for the 2012 London Olympics. Presented by Bank Street Arts in partnership with Print 4 Sheffield, Olympic Dreams features 8 images presented in light-boxes within an atmospheric darkened gallery space. “For the series I decided to concentrate on a ‘non standard’ approach to documentary photography. Rather than simply showing a day in their lives etc,” says James Dodd. “I wanted to convey their dreams, something that obviously isn’t visible.” Running until the end of this month, the exhibition can be seen in the Bank Street Arts gallery, 32-40 Bank Street, Sheffield. There is an evening viewing with the photographer planned for 17th September, starting at 7pm, which is open to the public.

Leading British photographer and film-maker Brian Griffin returns to Birmingham for Face to Face, his first major retrospective in his birth city. Known for the extraordinary composition and lighting of his portraits, Griffin’s distinctive style was developed during his early career as a staff photographer at Management Today. Joining the magazine in 1972, Griffin’s unique approach, with his witty and surreal touches, changed the face of corporate portraiture, leading to a series of significant commissions for leading companies around the world. Opening on 30 September and running till 21 November, Face to Face will take place in two adjacent locations in Birmingham’s Colmore Business District. A large-scale outdoor retrospective will showcase Griffin’s portraiture over the last 38 years, including many of his most prominent portraits of leading musicians, politicians and celebrities. Two accompanying indoor exhibitions will feature Griffin’s award-winning series’ Team and The Water People.

Canadian photographer Linda Rutenberg’s exhibition Eden at Nightis on show at Cornwall’s The Eden Project. Rutenberg’s current exhibition explores the rarely witnessed life of plants after dark in The Eden Project’s famous biomes. The innovative work leads on from two books, The Garden at Night and After Midnight, which were shot in North American public gardens. The prints were made with help from Shiraz Software, developers of RIP software package Shiraz Focus.

A major Eadweard Muybridge retrospective will open its gates on 8 September at Tate Britain. Bringing together over 150 works, this exhibition will demonstrate how Muybridge broke new ground in the emerging art form of photography. From his iconic images of motion to depictions of the sublime landscapes of America, the exhibition will present the full range of Muybridge’s work, exploring how he created and honed remarkable images that continue to resonate powerfully. Admission is £10, and the exhibition will run until 16 January 2011. A fully illustrated catalogue, published by Tate Publishing, will be available.

Previously unseen photographs from Nadav Kander’s journeys along the course of China’s Yangtze River will go on display at Flowers from 14 October 2010 to coincide with the publication of a monograph comprising the complete series. “The river is embedded in the consciousness of the Chinese, even those separated from it by thousands of miles,” the organisers say. “It plays a pivotal role in both the spiritual and physical life of the nation.” The exhibition coincides with the publication of a comprehensive monograph introduced by Kofi A. Annan and published by Hatje Cantz. Kofi A. Annan presented Kander with the 2009 Prix Pictet photographic award in sustainability for a selection of photographs from ‘Yangtze – The Long River’.
