This Autumn, a set of large platinum prints from four of Elliott Erwitt’s best known images will be available for purchase in the UK for the first time at Magnum Print Room, London. Shown in the context of a broader selection of fine photographs drawn from Erwitt’s distinguished career, the selection includes photographs of racial segregation in North Carolina (1950), a kiss reflected in the wing mirror of a car (California, 1955, above), glamorous movie star Marilyn Monroe (New York, 1956), and one of his best loved pictures of the relationship between man and dog, Felix, Gladys and Rover (New York, 1976). Using a new technique developed by the specialist printmaker Arkady Lvov and digital printing expert Gabe Greenberg over eight years, Erwitt’s platinum prints were produced using the latest Large Format Photo Negative application from HP. Other well-known images by Erwitt included in this exhibition as signed silver gelatin prints include portraits of Marlon Brando (1954), Grace Kelly (1956), Sophia Loren (1962) and Che Guevara (1964), a selection of his best known dog images and evocative, stolen moments, such as, a couple dancing in the kitchen in Spain (1952), a dove taking flight (1955), and a mother and baby (1953).

Ten years ago Rick Norsigian, a painter for the Fresno school district, bought a set of 65 large-format glass negatives at a garage sale for $45. Experts now say the collection is worth $200 million, as the photographs turned out to have been taken by none else than Ansel Adams himself. A team of art and forensic experts conducted an exhaustive examination to determine the origin of the photographs and concluded that the negatives are early works of the virtuoso landscape photographer, most probably taken between 1919 and the early 1930s. The final report for the investigation was released at a press conference held yesterday in a Beverly Hills gallery. However, the dispute is far from being settled, as a recently published AOL News article quotes Adams’ grandson as saying, “I think it’s irresponsible to claim that they’re Ansel’s… We think it’s a very significant claim and we think it’s not accurate”.

East London photographic gallery theprintspace will play host to a fantastic exhibition of still life and commercial photography from acclaimed photographer Ed James. Amongst the collection of photography is a series on TV dinners, shooting the dinners under photographic studio light, paying attention to every detail and showing people who usually eat this food by the light of the television set, what it really looks like. Another photograph (above) captures a wooden deer head in a living room, illustrating the irony of hunting. The wallpaper shows the animal in its environment; with the wooden trophy suggesting the hunter cannot quite do the deed of killing the deer. The exhibition is on view from today until 17 August 2010. The gallery, located at 74 Kingsland Road, London E2 8DL, is open from 9am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

“According to a leading scholar of 19th-century American photography, many works in a landmark retrospective of Eadweard Muybridge at the Corcoran Gallery of Art may not be by Muybridge at all.” So begins a letter we have received from Alexis Anderson of ArtInfo, a premier art news portal. A large body of Muybridge’s work, along with pieces of equipment he used to create his pictures with, have been accumulated in the exhibition; which will travel to the Tate Britain in September and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in February. It turns out that Weston Naef, a former J. Paul Getty Museum curator, thinks many of the photographs on display were actually taken by Muybridge’s friend Carleton Watkins, and sold to him for publication. Tyler Green of Modern Art Notes (MAN) has just started a week-long series on the emerging debate, with the first part being a Q&A with Naef himself. Interested readers should follow the link below to check out his introduction to the three-part interview.
