There’s an excellent podcast interview with sports photographer Adam Pretty over on the official Getty Images Sport Blog. Co-founder of Getty Images, Jonathan Klein, talks with Pretty about how he got into photography and the highlights of his career, with lots of inspirational pictures to backup the words. Pretty has covered several major sporting events including the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics, 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics, 2002 and 2006 Common Wealth Games and the 2004 Rugby World Cup. Ernesto Fernandez, one of Cuba’s greatest photographers, is featured in the ‘Cubanismo’ exhibition which opens this week at the Capital Culture gallery in London. Fernandez is considered one of the four greats of the “Epic” period of Cuban photography. An exhibition of Black and White fine art photographs of Cuba from the 1930s to the modern day, Cubanismo runs from Thursday September 27th - Saturday November 3rd 2007. The gallery is open Mon-Fri 11.00am-6.00pm.

The Association of Photographers (AOP) have joined in the protest against Getty Images plans to sell web stock images for $49. Photographers who currently have work with Getty will see a cut of around 95% on a like for like basis as a result of the new license. One AOP member shared their recent sales figures: ‘I had three web sales on Getty’s Stone brand last month, grossing $3361.00. Better than $147!’ This member would have to sell these images around 23 times to break even under the new web use model. The AOp have joined with partner organizations in calling for Getty to remove RM image collections from this business model.

Two of the UK’s finest outdoor photographers, Andy Rouse and Joe Cornish, will appear together on stage to discuss each other’s photography. “Inner Visions” - an event organised by Páramo Directional Clothing Systems - will see Rouse and Cornish reveal to the audience insights on their work and each other’s work. This event is being held on Saturday December 1st in Uplands Hall in Wadhurst, East Sussex. Tickets are on sale for £12 in advance (£15 on the door), or £10 for groups of 10+.

A new photo project called America at Home is billed as the largest collaborative project in Internet history. One hundred top photojournalists and millions of Americans will document the concept of home from September 17th to 23rd, creating the most extensive record of American home life ever created in the 21st century. They will contribute their own images via a series of daily snapshots taken at the same time of day across the nation each day throughout the week. Royal Photographic Society member Brian Griffin has made 165 portraits of the workers and managers involved in the construction of Britain’s first high speed railway. The construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link from St Pancras in London has taken nine years to construct, with 8,000 people working over 50 million hours to build it. Griffin’s portraits are being featured in an exhibition at the station, and in a book published on 18 September.

Last week Getty Images announced a new $49 “web use” license for images from all of its collections. This week several leading trade associations representing over 12,000 professional photographers have asked Getty to remove all Rights Managed imagery from the new license. In a letter to Getty, they contend that “Offering your very best imagery at heavily discounted prices may well increase volume, but it also risks undermining Getty’s core licensing business-as well as the businesses of the independent contributing photographers who create and own the majority of imagery in your RM collections.”

A report from the Stock Artists Alliance concludes that 1 out of every 15 stock images are stolen, accounting for an estimated loss of $67 million per year. SAA’s research addresses how and why the stock photo industry is subject to this theft. The report also describes current industry-wide initiatives and suggests specific steps to minimize piracy of stock images.

Jonathan Lowenstein, Jonathan Torgovnik and Leo Maguire will each receive $20,000 from Getty Images to pursue photojournalism projects. The 3 winners were selected from 124 applicants from 37 countries. Leo Maguire’s project “Lords of the Lane” will focus on the world of Gypsy bare-knuckle fighters in England. “Shadow Lives USA” by Jonathan Lowenstein will document six different issues facing those trying to enter the United States across the US-Mexico border. Jonathan Torgovnik’s project, “Intended Consequences”, follows 50 women who were raped during the Rwandan genocide 13 years ago, and who have children as a result.

Sports photographer Rick Maiman is providing a behind-the-scenes look at photographing the 2007 US Open Tennis Championships on the ‘Look Who’s Using Kingston’ website. “As a photographer, you need to keep in mind that you can’t produce Pulitzer Prize-winning pictures everyday,” said Maiman. “You have to value your work and care about it more passionately than anyone else.” Images captured by Maiman at this year’s US Open Championship, held August 27-September 9, will be uploaded to Kingston’s microsite.

Frank Gohlke’s black and white landscape photographs will be on show at PDNB Gallery in Dallas, Texas. Running from September 8 - October 13, 2007, photographs from Texas will be featured, including Gohlke’s famous Grain Elevator series.

Photojournalist Harry Benson has just revealed all on Kingston Technology’s ‘Icons of Photography’ microsite. Amongst other things, Benson shares what it was like to be standing next to Robert F. Kennedy when he was assassinated. Benson has photographed every U.S. president from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George W. Bush and marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Don McCullin will be presented with the Centenary Medal of The Society at The Royal Photographic Society Annual Awards. The Centenary Medal is awarded in recognition of a sustained, significant contribution to the art of photography. the RPS Annual Awards 2007 are being held at The Royal Institute of British Architects, London W1 during the evening of Thursday 4th October.

The Mencap Snap! photo awards took place last Friday night (22 June) at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, with 36 gold, bronze and silver awards to entrants in six categories. Snap! is a competition open to people with a learning disability, their friends and families and is organised by UK learning disability charity Mencap. All 36 images will remain on display at the V&A for one month (until 22 July).

The Royal Photographic Society launched its 150th Annual International Print Exhibition to a packed house at Hoopers Gallery in Clerkenwell, London on Tuesday evening. A final selection of 125 prints was chosen from a record 2,200 images submitted by 600 photographers worldwide. The winning image is an extraordinary shot of a scalloped hammerhead shark, taken in the waters of Costa Rica’s Cocos Island National Park by Richard Merritt.

Nature and wildlife photographer John Hyde is the latest addition to the Look Who’s Using Kingston website. Yoshi Kono is the winner of Ilford Photo’s Student of the Year competition. Kono won a medium format Mamiya 711 camera kit, £350 plus £250 of Ilford Photo products. “In the end, it was decided that the raw edge displayed by Yoshi Kono’s street photography work just took it that degree further, and merited the overall prize” commented Ilford Photo marketing director Howard Hopwood.

Olympus is sponsoring an exhibition of photographs by young refugees of war and famine in Uganda. Through the Eyes of Children – Life as a Refugee in Uganda will run for three weeks in London’s South Bank at the gallery@oxo from 14th June to 1st July 2007.

Seven Latin women photographers are celebrated in a new exhibition at the Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery in Dallas, USA. This is a group exhibition of classic and contemporary photographs from photographers that all have Latin roots, including Lola Alvarez Bravo, Delilah Montoya and Mariana Yampolsky. The exhibition runs from June 22nd - July 21st.

The new HP Gallery at Calumet Photo in Manhattan, New York has opened with the Francis Hills exhibit, “The Accidental Photographer,”. The HP Gallery will host a number of exhibits created on HP professional printing technologies. “Since our mission is to empower the world of image makers, we are delighted to join forces with HP in our New York store gallery,” said Michael Miller, president of Calumet Photographic.
