Co-founder of Getty Images, Jonathan Klein, talks with Pretty about how he got into photography and the highlights of his career, with lots of inspirational pictures to backup the words. Pretty has covered several major sporting events including the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics, 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics, 2002 and 2006 Common Wealth Games and the 2004 Rugby World Cup. Ernesto Fernandez, one of Cuba’s greatest photographers, is featured in the ‘Cubanismo’ exhibition which opens this week at the Capital Culture gallery in London. Fernandez is considered one of the four greats of the “Epic” period of Cuban photography. An exhibition of Black and White fine art photographs of Cuba from the 1930s to the modern day, Cubanismo runs from Thursday September 27th - Saturday November 3rd 2007. The gallery is open Mon-Fri 11.00am-6.00pm.

The Association of Photographers (AOP) have joined in the protest against Getty Images plans to sell web stock images for $49. Photographers who currently have work with Getty will see a cut of around 95% on a like for like basis as a result of the new license. One AOP member shared their recent sales figures: ‘I had three web sales on Getty’s Stone brand last month, grossing $3361.00. Better than $147!’ This member would have to sell these images around 23 times to break even under the new web use model. The AOp have joined with partner organizations in calling for Getty to remove RM image collections from this business model.

One hundred top photojournalists and millions of Americans will document the concept of home from September 17th to 23rd, creating the most extensive record of American home life ever created in the 21st century. Royal Photographic Society member Brian Griffin has made 165 portraits of the workers and managers involved in the construction of Britain’s first high speed railway. The construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link from St Pancras in London has taken nine years to construct, with 8,000 people working over 50 million hours to build it. Griffin’s portraits are being featured in an exhibition at the station, and in a book published on 18 September.

Last week Getty Images announced a new $49 “web use” license for images from all of its collections. This week several leading trade associations representing over 12,000 professional photographers have asked Getty to remove all Rights Managed imagery from the new license. In a letter to Getty, they contend that “Offering your very best imagery at heavily discounted prices may well increase volume, but it also risks undermining Getty’s core licensing business-as well as the businesses of the independent contributing photographers who create and own the majority of imagery in your RM collections.”

The 3 winners were selected from 124 applicants from 37 countries. Leo Maguire’s project “Lords of the Lane” will focus on the world of Gypsy bare-knuckle fighters in England. “Shadow Lives USA” by Jonathan Lowenstein will document six different issues facing those trying to enter the United States across the US-Mexico border. Jonathan Torgovnik’s project, “Intended Consequences”, follows 50 women who were raped during the Rwandan genocide 13 years ago, and who have children as a result.

The Mencap Snap! photo awards took place last Friday night (22 June) at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, with 36 gold, bronze and silver awards to entrants in six categories. The Royal Photographic Society launched its 150th Annual International Print Exhibition to a packed house at Hoopers Gallery in Clerkenwell, London on Tuesday evening. A final selection of 125 prints was chosen from a record 2,200 images submitted by 600 photographers worldwide.
