Kingston Technology has posted an interview with National Geographic photographer Gerd Ludwig. The 20 Questions interview provides an up-close-and-personal look at a world-class photographer. “Gerd is one of the great chroniclers of our time and his experience as a photographer and world traveler will help visitors to our site learn from his incredible career while gaining tips to improve the overall quality of their own photography,” said Jaja Lin, Flash memory marketing manager, Kingston. The PhotoVoice Photographers’ Lecture Series continues into 2008 with legendary British fashion and celebrity photographer John Swannell. On Tuesday 8th April, Swannell will talk about his extraordinary life in pictures: from his subtly lit portraits of the British monarchy to his classically composed nudes and distinctive panoramic rural landscapes. He has also generously offered himself up as a raffle prize - the lucky winner of which will enjoy a one-off opportunity to spend a day with him in his studio.

Wildlife photographer Andy Rouse will be at the Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show at the NEC, Birmingham, UK in March. Andy will be available for personal critiques on the Páramo stand at the Show, OU 414. Photographers can sign up in advance with Páramo to have 10 minutes of Andy’s time at the show. For £15 (with profits going to the Aspira Fund), photographers can proffer up to three photographs to be critiqued by Andy.

The RPS is launching three new youth photography bursaries worth £15,000 each with funding from Jeff Vickers FRPS. The bursaries aim to inspire and encourage young photographers to excel in the field. Applicants must demonstrate a flair for imaging and creativity in their work. Anyone under 25 years old can apply for the Jeff Vickers FRPS Genix Imaging Bursary.

Tim Graham has photographed the British Royal Family gathered together for the first time in 35 years. Graham was invited to photograph the Royal Family in celebration of the Diamond Wedding Anniversary of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. The image, featuring twenty-five Royal Family members, will form part of Tim Graham’s Royal Archive that from the end of this month will be exclusively available at the Getty Images Hulton Archive.

ILFORD is sponsoring a photo exhibition by photographer Paula Barr at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. USA Route 90 Highway, Gulf Coast Echo is a photographic journal that tells the story of the devastating effects hurricanes can have on displaced persons and survivors. “I am very honored to be a part of this forum and to have the opportunity to showcase my work. Hollie Cookson from Warrington has been awarded the title of Britain’s Best Young Photographer in the national Getty Images’ My Britain young photographer competition. Competition judge, Adrian Murrell, Global Vice President, Editorial, Getty Images, said:  “Hollie’s pictures stood out because they are very memorable British images, which capture plenty of emotion.  As well as being technically very strong, she captures her subjects unawares which is a very hard thing to do.” Hollie wins the exclusive prize of a one-day internship with a Getty Images photographer.

Award winning marine photographer Kos Evans is to exhibit her work at the Earls Court Boat Show in London. The exhibition, “Against the Elements”, will feature some of Evans’ most breath-taking photography from the last 25 years. The Earls Court Boat Show takes place at Earls Court from 1st to 9th December 2007.

Beyond Sight is a multi-sensory exhibition of photographs by blind and visually impaired people, held at the Association of Photographers gallery in London. In recognition of International Day of Disabled People 2007, images by groups in the UK and Mexico trained by PhotoVoice and Sight of Emotion will be exhibited alongside work by renowned sighted and blind photographers, including Gerardo Nigenda and Martin Parr. The exhibition will celebrate the possibilities of photography; a medium traditionally regarded as the domain of sighted people, and will challenge our conventional understanding of visual communication and of what it means to ‘see’. The exhibition runs from 3rd - 8th December 2007.

Getty Images has acquired one of the world’s premier collections of imagery depicting the British Royal Family over the last 30 years. The collection, taken by Royal photographer, Tim Graham, spans four generations of the Royal Family and contains over 200,000 images. “Having photographed Royal occasions for three decades, it is now appropriate for me to look to the future,” comments Tim Graham. “I am aware of the historical significance of my archive and I want to ensure that my photographs will continue to be published worldwide for many years to come.” Tim Graham’s collection of 30 years of the best royal photography will be housed at Getty Images’ Hulton Archive in London.

Victorian Visions is a new exhibition of 19th century photography running at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Wirral, UK.  The collection is on loan from the Victorian & Albert Museum in London and looks at many major names in the field, such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Lady Hawarden, Roger Fenton, Francis Frith, Robert Howlett and B.B. Turner. The exhibition contains around 40 original photographs and offers a fascinating insight into the Victorian view of the world. ‘Victorian Visions 19th century photography’ runs from 1 December to 16 March 2008, admission is free.

The inaugural Renegade Photo Shoot 2007 brought together an eclectic mix of photographers to shoot varied assignments in New York. “The cultural diversity found on New York City streets, mixed with the Renegade team enabled me to learn different skills and open my eyes to new ways of photographically capturing imagery,” said Helene DeLillo of Helene DeLillo Photography. Kingston Technology have published a 20 question interview with photographer Colin Finlay, known for his photojournalism images as well as his advertising work. Finlay has documented with compassion, empathy and dignity the human condition as it has unfolded throughout the world for the last 17 years. “I appreciate the opportunity to share my work through the ‘Icons of Photography’ Web site,” said Finlay. “The photo critiques are great and I enjoy reading what the other Icons have to say. I’m fortunate to call the other Icons friends and I am proud to be a part of such a great, diverse group.”

The Royal Photographic Society is offering a range of different bursary schemes to support and encourage young photographers. This follows the RPS 150th International Print Exhibition (launched during the summer), where a print was chosen to be included that was taken by a nine year old - the youngest in the Society’s history. The UK-based Royal Photographic Society was founded in 1853 ‘to promote the Art and Science of Photography’.

“Life: A Journey Through Time” by Frans Lanting has been printed using the latest Epson Stylus Pro printing technology. This photographic exhibition, which will tour Europe, depicts a journey of photographic discovery that parallels new scientific insights about the story of life on Earth. “We used Epson’s state-of-the-art Stylus Pro printers and UltraChrome K3 Ink with Vivid Magenta to help us achieve prints that will do these natural wonders justice.  I can say that we have more than fulfilled this aim.” commented Lanting.

“Fear and Loathing in Mexico… Hunter S. Thompson” is a new exhibition from photographer Al Satterwhite. The images at the show will represent the time Al spent with Hunter in Cozumel., Mexico, in 1974. Most of the images will be printed on Hahnemuhle papers. The show is presented by East Village Collective and The Woodstock Film Festival and will run from October 10th November 10th.

33 photos have been selected to stand the chance of winning the prestigious RSPCA Young Photographer Awards. “The Young Photographer Awards has always been a difficult competition to win, but 2007 will be the toughest yet. The standard of the entries has been exceptionally high and the judges had great difficulty in reducing the images down to these shortlisted finalists.“ commented chief RSPCA photographer Andrew Forsyth. Awards will be given in categories including Overall Winner, Olympus Portfolio Prize, Under 12, 12-18 and the new Pet Personalities categories. Prizes range from an RSPCA photoshoot to top of the range cameras.

Photographers have until November 15, 2007, to postmark applications for the next two $20,000 Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography, to be announced in February 2008. Applicants must include a written proposal of 550 words or less explaining their project, along with a supporting portfolio of between 30 and 60 images of their previous work. Each grant consists of $20,000 as well as project execution support from Getty Images photo editors.

Nikon will sponsor 100 of the worlds most promising young photojournalists as part of the 20th annual Eddie Adams workshop. “Nikon has been a proud sponsor of the Eddie Adams Workshop since its inception 20 years ago.  This year is a tremendous milestone for the workshop and a true testament to Eddie’s vision for creating an education program that helps promising young photographers become award-winning photojournalists.” said Bill Pekala, general manager of Nikon Professional Services. In addition to the event sponsorship, this is the fourth year that Nikon will award a $10,000 scholarship to the top student from the workshop.
