Holiday Gift Guide 2005With the Thanksgiving holiday over and only a few weeks until Christmas, it’s time to start thinking about what you are going to buy the photographer in your life, even if that’s you! I’ve looked back over all the products that I have reviewed during 2005 and picked my favourites, from digital cameras to printers and stocking fillers. I’ve also suggested some similar products that may be worth looking at which I haven’t reviewed, and there are handy links to the latest and most competitive prices from online retailers. So, somewhat in advance, Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

Johann GudbjargarsonThe 63rd PhotographyBLOG Portfolio has been submitted by Johann Gudbjargarson.

“Photographing people and travel photography are Johann’s favourite subjects in photography and he has travelled with his girlfriend (Sonja who shares his passion for photography) a lot in Iceland, Europe and Asia with his camera. In the summer of 2004 they travelled for 5 weeks in Eastern Europe (Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Hungary) and this summer they travelled with the Trans-Siberian railway from Moscow to China and travelled further in Asia on that trip. They are still working on the pictures but a selection has appeared on Johanns photoblog (joephotos.net). Next summer he plans to travel to India and Italy with his camera.”

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1The Sony Cybershot DSC-H1 is a 5 megapixel camera with a 2.5 inch LCD screen. The Sony H1’s standout feature is the massive 12x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 36-432mm, allowing for many creative opportunities. The DSC-H1 also offers an image stabilisation system which ensures sharper results when hand-holding the camera. There are 7 different scene modes and a range of more creative shooting modes available. Olympus Mju Digital 600The compact 6 megapixel Olympus Mju Digital 600 continues Olympus’ line of weatherproof digital cameras. The Mju 600 is resistant to water spray, although it won’t survive being dunked in a tank of water! Other standout features include automatic brightening of the LCD screen in low-light, a red-eye mode that fixes photos that are stored in the Mju Digital 600’s memory, and a mode which reduces blurry images caused by camera shake or a fast-moving subject. A 2.5 inch LCD screen and 23 scene modes round off the specification. Does the Olympus Mju Digital 600 deserve a place in your pocket? Find out in my review.

Konica Minolta Dynax 5DThe Konica Minolta Dynax 5D is a new entry-level 6 megapixel digital SLR that is currently one of the most compact DSLRs currently available. Highlights of the Konica Minolta Dynax 5D include a large 2.5 inch LCD screen, unique CCD-shift anti-shake mechanism that enables you to take sharp photos at slower shutter speeds than normal and a 9 point auto-focus system. Interchangeability with all Konica Minolta lenses and a range of different picture modes for beginners and experienced photographers alike complete the specification. Perhaps more importantly, all of this is available for an RRP of £599/799 body only or £649/$899 with the 18-70mm kit lens. This drastically undercuts the older and (slightly) higher-spec Konica Minolta Dynax 5D camera and puts the 5D into direct competition with the likes of the Nikon D50, Pentax *ist DL and Canon Rebel XT/350D. So is the Konica Minolta Dynax 5D a better buy than its more expensive, older sibling, and also the other brands that are battling to dominate this rapidly growing sector of the market? Carry on reading to find out.

Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1The Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 is a stylish 8 megapixel digital camera with a slimline body that is just 19.5mm deep. Available in silver, black or red, the Konica Minolta X1 features Konica Minolta’s Anti-Shake technology, as used on the company’s range of digital SLR cameras. This enables you to take sharp photos at slower shutter speeds than usual. The Konica Minolta X1’s anti-shake system is different, however, to the other Konica Minolta cameras, in that the lens unit is moved to compensate for camera shake, rather than the CCD sensor. The Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 also offers a large 2.5 inch LCD screen (at the expense of an optical viewfinder) which is is protected by an acrylic panel to reduce scratching. Finally, there is a a newly designed “flat” 3x optical zoom lens, which means that the lens doesn’t protrude when zooming and is therefore truly 19.5mm deep. So is the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 the perfect union of style and substance? Carry on reading this review to find out the answer.
