Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z10The Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z10 is an ultra-zoom digital camera that promises a lot in exchange for a relatively small amount of cash. Based around a 3.2 megapixel CCD sensor and an 8x zoom lens that is equivalent to 36-290mm on a 35mm camera, the Z10 has an amazing list of advanced features that make you look twice at its budget price-tag. A very fast start-up time of around 1/2 second, semi-automatic and manual exposure modes, futuristic body design, rapid autofocus and a macro mode that that lets you focus as close as 1cm from your subject all sound too good to be true, given that you can currently buy the Z10 for around £150. So can the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z10 claim the title of the ultimate entry-level, ultra-zoom camera? Or have Konica Minolta bitten off more than they can chew? Carry on reading to discover the answer.

The latest PhotographyBLOG Poll was really for my own use, asking “What screen resolution are you using?”. PhotographyBLOG is designed for a resolution of 1024x768 or larger, which seems to be justified given that over 90% of you voted for those screen resolutions:

800x600 [59 votes]
1024x768 [411 votes]
1280x1024 [337 votes]

Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50The Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50 fits into the ultra-compact family of digital cameras, being about the same size as a credit card at just 8cms by 6cms and weighing 125g. Despite its diminutive dimensions, Konica Minolta have still managed to include both a 5 megapixel CCD sensor and a large 2 inch LCD screen. In addition, the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50 has a start-up time of around 1/2 second, a sliding lens cover and a stylish brushed-effect body. So is the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50 the ultimate, carry-with-you-everywhere digital camera? Or does it add up to less than the sum of its tiny parts? Read my extensive review to find out.

Holiday Gift Guide 2004With only 6 weeks to go until Christmas, it’s time to start thinking about what you are going to buy for the photographer in your life, even if that’s you! I’ve looked back over all the products that I have reviewed during 2004 and picked my favourites, from digital cameras to printers and books. I’ve also suggested some other products that may be worth looking at (which I haven’t reviewed), and there are handy links to online shops so that you don’t even have to venture out and brave the hordes of shoppers!

So, somewhat in advance, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Sanyo Xacti C1The Sanyo Xacti C1 is quite unlike any other digital camera available today, looking more like a tiny version of a digital camcorder than a conventional digicam. It has been designed like this principally because it allows you to record both 3.2 megapixel still images and 640x480, 30fps MPEG-4 movies. Other notable features include a macro mode that allows you to get as close as 2cms away from the subject, and a 5.8 optical zoom lens that is equivalent to 38?220mm on a 35mm format camera. So is the Sanyo Xacti C1 the perfect fusion of still and moving images, or just a compromise between the two? Read on to discover the answer.

Patricio BurracoThe 42nd PhotographyBLOG Portfolio has been submitted by Patricio Burraco.

“I’m Patricio, from Cachari, Argentina. I’m sending some of my pictures. As you can see, I like BW approach to people and nature. Nothing formal here!. Even pets or little details in my own backyard offers me great chances of getting colorful pictures, including my friends doing joking “and interesting” faces to my lens!

There’s a couple of pics covering some flowers or details in my garden, five close-ups of my brother in BW/sepia, in the trainyard, and two of my cat, Pappo. There’s also a picture of my town’ railway station. Almost a desert, as you can see. The stunning red picture was a Photoshop Elements approach to a BW picture of other friend, Pablo, the “Beer Dude”, as he is know here.

Technically speaking, my camera is a F828, which is astounding, and I love. Really great to get BW, real color or saturated color photos. Each picture is less than 100kb in size, because Net’s problem handling full 8Mpx images (in the future it will be milliseconds to download, but for now, 56kps is a cool speed) :-D”

Ricoh Caplio R1Ricoh have launched a number of stylish and innovative digital cameras during 2004, with the Caplio R1 being the latest model. The Ricoh Caplio R1 retains the wide-angle 28mm lens of the slightly older Caplio RX, but now extends the zoom range to a very useful 135mm, whilst still maintaining a slim camera body of 25mm. As usual with Ricoh cameras, the R1 has the world’s fastest shutter response and start-up times (at least according to Ricoh when it was first announced in August 2004), being ready to shoot in less than 0.8 seconds, and taking less than 0.1 seconds to fire the shutter release. The Caplio R1 also has a has a pretty amazing Macro setting that allows you to focus on a subject that is just 1cm away from the camera. So does all of this add up to make a great digital camera?
