Popular Photography have published their review of the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
“Canon’s New EOS 5D DSLR ($3,300 street, body only) is a study in the yin and yang of camera design. On the one hand, its 12.8MP full-frame CMOS sensor eliminates the 35mm lens factor found on all lower-priced DSLRs and gives it a potential image-quality edge. On the other hand, it costs more than twice as much as the 8.2MP EOS 20D ($1,300 street) from which it was cloned, and it’s missing a few of the 20D’s features. So you might ask, if the EOS 5D takes a picture in the woods and nobody hears it, does it make a sound purchase? Put simply, yes. Which is why we made it our 2005 Camera of the Year.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the new Canon IXUS 55 compact digital camera (also known as the SD450), which has 5.0 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD screen and 3x optical zoom lens.
“With the PowerShot SD550 and SD450 Digital ELPH, Canon has once again stood its stylish ELPH digital cameras on end, packing even more features into the stylish compacts. The 7.12-megapixel SD550 and 5.0-megapixel SD450 have the same shell and specs as their SD500 and SD400 predecessors (which continue to be available), but offer more options. Canon has retained their acclaimed optical viewfinder but matched it with a large 2.5-inch LCD monitor, redesigning the user interface to take advantage of the new screen. Both continue to offer the extremely unusual (and frankly, rather cool) “My Color” modes that allow you to selectively replace any color in your photo with a different one, or to make the image black and white with the exception of a single color. Overall, the SD450 is one of the more appealing subcompact digital cameras we’ve seen to date.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have published their review of the Fujifilm FinePix S9500 Zoom, a new 9 megapixel digital camera with a 28-300mm lens with twist-barrel zoom control (also known as the S9000).
“Replacing the S7000 at the top of Fuji’s consumer digicam product line, the FinePix S9000 ups the ante in terms of resolution (9 vs 6.3 megapixels) and zoom range (10.7x 28-300mm vs 6x 35-210mm), while retaining the SLR-like form factor, advanced features and VGA movie mode of its predecessor. While it can be used as a simple point-n-shoot in Auto and Scene modes, the S9000 will appeal most to experienced photographers who will benefit from its advanced exposure control and optics.”

DPReview have just reviewed the 7 megapixel Olympus SP-310 digital camera.
“The SP-310 is perhaps a camera that deserves more attention than it has so far received - it offers a comprehensive feature set at a remarkably low price in an easy to use and well put together package. Yes, the JPEG output suffers from the same over-sharpening artefacts as the recently-reviewed Stylus 800, but to a significantly lesser degree, and certainly not in a way that will adversely affect prints. And of course in mitigation SP-310 also offers the advantage of raw capture to those with the patience to wait 10 seconds between shots and to fine tune the conversion.”

TrustedReviews have a review of the new Olympus SP-350, an 8 megapixel camera that offers a 3x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-114mm and a 2.5 inch LCD monitor.
“Like all Olympus models, the SP-350’s build quality is outstandingly good, and even though it has a plastic body it feels solid and robust. Although it is physically quite a small camera, it has a large sculpted handgrip and is comfortable and secure to hold. Pressing the small and slightly fiddly power button next to the optical viewfinder activates the camera in about 1.5 seconds, a very creditable performance. The main shooting control is the mode dial on the top panel, which offers a choice of full auto, program exposure, aperture or shutter priority and full manual, as well as 24 pre-set scene modes and four use-defined ‘My modes’.”

CNET have reviewed the Sanyo Xacti E6, a 6 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens that is equivalent to 38-114mm.
“Sanyo, which produces many of the snapshot digital cameras you see marketed under other brand names, is stepping up its efforts to gain some brand recognition of its own. Given that the company’s name is hardly synonymous with high quality, we started off with low expectations for the company’s Xacti VPC-E6, a 6-megapixel, 3X-zoom ultracompact. We were pleasantly surprised to find it a decent—albeit a little pricey—snapshot camera with an eye-catching 3-inch LCD, a graphical user interface, and reasonable image quality. Only the performance disappointed.”

DCResource have just reviewed the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1, a 10.3 megapixel compact camera with an APS-C sized sensor that allows for a “live” preview.
“The photo quality, as I’ve said, is stellar. I have a lot of cameras here in my office, and the R1 was what I always grabbed when I had a challenging shot to take. The camera’s high ISO performance approaches that of the best consumer-level D-SLRs, and it blows away fixed-lens cameras. At low ISO sensitivities photos are clear as glass, and purple fringing levels are low. The camera doesn’t apply too much sharpening to photos at the default settings, so you may want to bump that up if it bothers you.”

Luminous Landscape have just reviewed the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1, a 10.3 megapixel compact camera with an APS-C sized sensor that allows for a “live” preview.
“I am very ambivalent about the Sony R1. With its large and high resolution sensor, excellent lens, and first rate build quality for under US $1,000 it offers photographers a combination of features and abilities that in a DSLR would cost 2-3X as much to implement. But, it still is a digicam – or FLD, and therefore lacks some of the features that DSLR users take for granted, such as fast frame rates and snappy autofocus. In exchange the R1 offers a waist level finder, a real-time histogram, and totally silent operation – features that no DSLR can provide.”

Popular Photography have reviewed Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.
“Photoshop Elements 4.0 ($90 download, $100 box) is the latest iteration of Adobe’s photo-editing software for everyone. Version 3.0 was a giant leap forward—the program went from a pared-down Photoshop to a redesigned program in its own right. Photoshop Album, formerly separate software, merged with Elements to make the editor-organizer a super deal. Number 4 is not radically different from its predecessor, but there are a bunch of fun and useful new features that make it worth an upgrade.”

Northlight Images have reviewed DxO Optics Pro v3.5.
“If you’ve just read some of my gripes, you may wonder why I choose to use DxO Optics Pro? One simple reason - image quality. The speed means that I’m unlikely to use it converting 300+ raw files from an event that I might have covered. Whilst it works on JPEGs from a camera as well, I always shoot RAW (some of my reasons). For individual images, where quality comes foremost, it is currently my raw converter of choice. With raw files from my 1Ds it handles partially burnt out highlights in a much more graceful way than Photoshop ACR. Much better for sunsets, and since I know that others have questioned the validity of this conclusion, I’d just say ‘Try it and see for yourself’ :-) I’ve used it extensively for my black and white landscape prints, where the ‘lighting engine’ helps provide colour images that convert very well to black and white.”

The FinePix S9500 is their current flagship, featuring a 9 Mp high sensitivity Super CCD HR image sensor and a 10.7x wide-to-tele zoom lens. A wide range of options makes the FinePix S9500 equally suitable for the experienced photographer and the novice, solving virtually any photographic task.
Amsterdam, 21. November, 2005 – DIWA (Digital Imaging Websites Association), a world-wide organisation of collaborating websites within digital imaging, today announces a DIWA Gold Award to the 9 Megapixel Fujifilm FinePix S9500 digital megazoom camera.
Image quality is fundamentally depending on two vital elements in a digital camera, the image sensor and the lens. In both respects, Fujifilm is in full control. Their successful development of the unique Super CCD image sensors is a key factor in the S9500, with remarkable 9 Mp resolution and wide sensitivity range, between ISO 80 and ISO 1600. Also the lens exhibits unique features with 10.7x zoom range from 28 mm wide angle to 300 mm supertele, high f/2.8-f/4.9 lens speed and 1 cm supermacro. This magnum lens is still surprisingly compact, beautifully integrated into the S9500 SLR-like camera body.

Bob Atkins has reviewed the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens, suitable for the Canon EOS 300D and 20D cameras.
“The Canon EF-S 10-22/3.5-4.5 USM is Canon’s widest lens for Digital SLRs. It has the same field of view on a DSLR with a 1.6x sensor as a 16-35 zoom has on a full frame 35mm camera. The construction of this lens is excellent with no “plastic” feel to it. Focus is very fast using Canon’s ring-type USM motor, which also allows full time manual focusing without having to switch from “autofocus” to “manual” mode. The lens does not change length when zoomed and the filter mount does not rotate, facilitating the use of a polarizer.”
