Samsung have announced plans to add mobile TV and movie playback to their future digital cameras. In an article on the Korea Times website, a company spokesperson said “Our DMB cameras will compete against phones as we will arm them with a screen as large as 3 inches diagonally, much larger than today’s DMB phones at about 2.2 inches.” Samsung also stated that they aim to become one of the top 3 digital camera makers by 2007, which is to say the least an aggressive aim. It remains to be seen if adding new features previosuly unseen in digicams will tempt buyers to purchase a Samsung product.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1Imaging Resource have just reviewed the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1, a 10.3 megapixel compact camera with an APS-C sized sensor that allows for a “live” preview.

“Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-R1 is one of the latest in the long (and incredibly broad) line of digital cameras that reflects Sony’s commanding position in the digital camera marketplace. The Sony R1 (considerably) extends the high range of the Cyber-shot line, offering a full 10.3 megapixels of resolution, via a Sony-built CMOS sensor. The CMOS sensor in the DSC-R1 is just slightly smaller than the “APS-C” size imagers used in most current digital SLRs, and brings with it the expected improvement in image noise levels and ISO sensitivity that naturally accompany larger sensor chips. At the same time though, the Sony DSC-R1 takes advantage of the low power consumption of CMOS to provide a live electronic viewfinder display, something missing in typical SLR camera designs. Because it needs no bulky mirror assembly, the rear element of the Sony DSC-R1’s 5x zoom lens can get much closer to the sensor’s surface, greatly reducing chromatic aberration and improving corner to corner sharpness. A unique, 2.0” top-mounted, swiveling LCD monitor rounds out the package. Taken as a package, the Sony DSC-R1 delivers excellent optical and image quality at an affordable price, and is sure to present a compelling proposition for many photographers who might otherwise be considering a digital SLR.”

Kodak Easyshare P880DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the new Kodak Easyshare P880 digital camera. The Kodak Easyshare P880 is an 8 megapixel model with wide-angle 24–140 mm zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD screen.

“The Kodak EasyShare P880 is the flagship model of the manufacturer’s new Performance Series. The 8 megapixel digital camera was announced in August 2005 and released just in time for the holiday shopping rush. With its 1/1.8-inch CCD and Kodak Color Science Chip, the P880 has SLR-like qualities while still being marketed as easy to use. While it is SLR shaped, the wide 24-140mm (equivalent) Schneider-Kreuznach 5.8x optical zoom lens cannot be taken off. The Kodak P880 also has a 2.5-inch LCD screen and an electronic viewfinder. This SLR-shaped digital camera sells for a retail price of $599, which is more than most compacts but less than even entry level consumer DSLRs. This is exactly where Kodak wants the P880.”

Canon IXUS 750DIWA member LetsGoDigital have published their review of the Canon IXUS 750 digital camera (also known as the Canon PowerShot SD550), which has 7.1 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD screen and 3x optical zoom lens.

“During a press-conference August of this year, Canon introduced a new line of digital cameras, among which the new Canon Digital IXUS 750 digital camera. This camera is the latest top model in the successful IXUS line of digital cameras. The Canon IXUS 750 succeeds the IXUS 700 and has an attractive stainless steel body. As far as looks are concerned, the Digital IXUS 750 does not differ much from its predecessor. It’s safe to say that a digital camera from the IXUS line virtually always ensures a successful sale. The model has become a brand name in itself, an impressive achievement! “

Canon IXUS 750DCViews have published their review of the Canon IXUS 750 digital camera (also known as the Canon PowerShot SD550), which has 7.1 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD screen and 3x optical zoom lens.

“When we tested the S400 or IXUS 400 in October 2003 we mentioned that we had lost count on the number of Digital Elphs in existence at that time. Two years on, it is clear that it is not a question of how many more Elphs Canon will release but when the next one will arrive. With most manufacturers replacing or updating digital models almost every six months, Canon keep supplying us with a steady stream of new compacts of which the SD550, or IXUS750 as it is called in certain markets, is the most recent one. With a 7-megapixel sensor, a fast 9-point AiAF autofocus system and 3x optical zoom the SD550 is now Canon’s top model in the series, sporting a huge 2.5” LCD screen and an ultra compact stainless steel body. As we have come to expect, all Elphs are built like the proverbial tank and will be good for many years of photo fun. Our personal IXUS400 is now more than two years old and although its design and features are becoming a bit dated it is still going strong after more than 10.000 images.”

This week focuses on the digital SLR vs advanced compact camera debate. Some digital camera companies are increasingly focusing on DSLRs and moving away from compact digicams. Digital SLR cameras are quickly becoming cheaper, with more features at a lower price than ever before. So which one would you buy, why would you buy it, and which specific models would you recommend? Shout out now…

Olympus E-500DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Olympus E-500, an 8 megapixel DSLR with a 2.5 inch LCD screen in a body with a classic penta-prism design.

“The E-500’s 8-megapixel imager offers plenty of resolution, an advantage over its 6-megapixel competitors both for producing large prints and high-quality cropped images. The E-500’s results were well-exposed, and color reproduction was realistic. The E-500’s image quality was very good at ISO 100 and 200. At higher ISO’s, noise becomes evident; while 400 is very usable, noise becomes evident in shadow and midtone areas at ISO 800, and there’s noise throughout the image at ISO 1600 as well as very noticeable reduction in image detail.”

Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1Imaging Resource have published their review of the 8 megapixel Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1.

“This year, the latest model continuing the heritage of the “X” line is the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1. While a little bigger than, and visually quite dramatically different to its recent X-series predecessors, the X1 will still feel familiar to anybody who’s used those cameras - and its new Anti Shake feature is a very welcome addition. The high resolution of eight megapixels offers good detail and sharpness, but unfortunately comes at a cost, as the maximum ISO sensitivity is just 200. The body design may be very stylish looking, but is perhaps somewhat less practical, being a magnet for fingerprints and smudges. The X1 is very much representative of the Konica Minolta merger, a slim X-series camera in the shiny reflective skin of a Konica G-series. In some ways, the DiMAGE X1 is a departure from what have been some of the mainstays of the X-series.”
