Olympus CAMEDIA C-60 ZOOMImaging Resource have just reviewed the 6 megapixel Olympus CAMEDIA C-60 ZOOM.

“On the whole, I think the C-60’s positives more than outweigh its negatives, but how you feel about them will depend a lot on the sort of shooting you intend to do, and how you intend to use your images. If you need to shoot at high ISOs a lot and make large prints (larger than 8x10) with the results, the C-60’s image noise could be a factor. On the other hand, point and shoot users mainly making 4x6 prints probably won’t be aware of it.”

Digital Outback Photo’s latest article is a useful guide to understanding and using the histogram on your digital camera, including color channel clipping and the “expose to the right” rule.

“In the field the main difference using a film or a digital camera is the LCD on the back of the digital camera giving you the ability to evaluate an image right after exposure. So you might think that watching your pictures on that small LCD is a main benefit going digital. Ok, if you try hard you can check sharpness by zooming into the image. The main advantage of this LCD for me is actually to check the exposure of my last photo.”

Sony Cyber-shot U40CNET have just published their review of the Sony Cybershot DSC U40, a stylish 2-megapixel digicam available in four colors (silver, black, dark blue and red), which costs around $200.

“Smaller than an Apple iPod Mini and every bit as stylish, the 2-megapixel Sony Cyber Shot DSC-U40 offers easy point-and-shoot operation. And like Apple’s tr?s chic MP3 player, it comes in four colors: red, blue, black, and silver. In addition to looking slick, the U40 is fast. However, it has some drawbacks. There’s no optical zoom, and its 1-inch LCD can be hard to work with. Plus, its photo quality won’t exactly wow you.”

Epson Stylus Photo R200About.com have reviewed the Epson Stylus Photo R200 Printer, which offers direct CD/DVD Printing for only $99.

“Photo printers are becoming much more common as digital camera enthusiasts decide to print their own photographs rather than send the to a retail developer. As a result, print vendors are looking for ways to distinguish their products from the rest. Epson has found one way with their Stylus Photo R200. This compact, well-engineered, printer brings two advantages to the table: it’s inexpensive, and it has the ability to labels directly onto printable CD/DVD discs.”

Kyocera Finecam S3RDCMAG.co.uk have just published their review of the 3 megapixel Kyocera FineCam S3R.

“The S5R was amongst the first of Kyocera’s range of compacts to feature the powerful RTUNE chip. This technology is now finding its way into more mainstream and accordingly affordable cameras. With the RTune processor at its heart, the Finecam S3R has an excellent turn of speed and a minimal three second start up time. With the appropriate memory ? 16Mb is included in the bundle ? the S3R can capture three shots a second continuously. Should you wish to take video clips rather than a succession of stills, the S3R can record 640x480 AVI files at thirty frames per second, again only limited by the confines of the storage.”

Fuji FinePix S3000DCMAG.co.uk have reviewed the Fuji FinePix S3000 digital camera, which features 3.24 effective million pixels, 6X Fujinon optical zoom and digital movie recording. The S300 uses xD-Picture Card (16MB to 512MB) storage and its lens focal length is equivalent to 38-228mm on a 35mm camera. The list price for the S300 is £290 / $399.95.

“The one sticking point with the S3000 is the electronic viewfinder, a small LCD screen mounted within the eyepiece. A proper optical viewfinder is, to many enthusiasts, superior to an EVF, because if you?re shooting in less-than-perfect lighting with an EVF, gauging your composition becomes sheer guesswork. A sensor tries to overcome the disparities between light and shade, but you often lose detail in areas of shade, even if they may be intelligible in the final photograph thanks to flash.”

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC50TrustedReview have just reviewed the 3 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC50 digital camera (found via Gizmodo).

“The LC50 is Panasonic’s entry level camera and with a price of £149.98 including VAT from Panasonic’s own online shop, it looks like a real bargain on the surface. What’s most impressive is that even at this price you’re getting a Leica lens, whereas the Sony entry level cameras don’t tend to come with Zeiss lenses. With this in mind, the big question is whether Panasonic has had to make any major compromises to squeeze in the Leica hardware and branding at such a low price point.”

Michael Reichmann’s latest article over on his Luminous Landscape website is an excellent introduction to a subject that confuses a lot of digital photographers (myself included): printer colour management.

“The leading cause of confusion, anxiety and martial disharmony among photographers concerns printer settings. “What the hell are the correct settings for the dozens of buttons and dialogs in both the image editing program and printer driver?” This is the the most common question that I’m asked at seminars, and by e-mail (though usually somewhat more politely than this). But it does mirror the frustration that most people feel when confronted with the seemingly endless setting choices available.

Here then is a simplified and concise description of how to set your printing software to give the most reliable and accurate colour results. It is based on using Photoshop and an Epson printer, but should be comprehensible with most other programs and printers.”

Minolta Dimage F200Josh Waller has just reviewed the Minolta Dimage F200, a 4 megapixel, 3x optical zoom compact digital camera with an aluminum body.

“The camera produces great images, with rich colour, low noise, and good detail. Ever so slightly soft images, that I personally think look better with a slight sharpen - perhaps this would be corrected if I set sharpness to “high”, instead of “normal” in the cameras settings - this is nothing to worry about too much though. Exposure is generally very good, occasionally images can be slightly dark however - depending on the subject matter.”
