Phase One and Sony have designed a new 100-megapixel CMOS sensor for the Phase One XF 100MP Camera System. This new medium-format imager delivers true 16-bit colour, 15 f-stops of dynamic range, live view capturing with HDMI output, sensitivity settings from 50 to 12800 and exposure times of up to 60 minutes. At the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Canon U.S.A. will challenge attendees to "see the impossible" at booth #13106 in the Central Hall. The booth will feature a Canon 8K Ride Experience where attendees can experience, firsthand, the physical and emotional reactions that take place when an 8K video projected on a large screen simulates a physical journey. There will also be an 8K Photo Gallery that displays precise moments from an 8K video. At the booth’s center, attendees can navigate up the Canon Lens Tower, which showcases large and long-zoom lenses from Canon’s line of more than 103 Canon EF Series lenses as well as Canon’s innovative CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm lens capable of shooting brilliant 4K video at up to 1500mm with its built-in 1.5x extender. Kenko Tokina have officially announced the availability of their AT-X14-20mm F2 PRO DX lens for digital SLR cameras with APS-C sized sensors. Featuring a constant maximum aperture of f/2, this brand new wide zoom is equivalent to a 21-30mm lens in 35mm terms. The optical formula comprises 13 lens elements in 11 groups including 2 super-low-dispersion aspherical glass elements. Tokina’s exclusive One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between AF/MF simply by sliding the focus ring, while the 9 bladed near-circular aperture diaphragm allows for a natural bokeh rendering - especially when the lens is set to its minimum focus distance of 28cm. The Tokina AT-X PRO SD 14-20mm F2 (IF) DX wide zoom has an 82mm filter thread, weighs in at 725 grams, and comes in Canon & Nikon fit. The Canon variant is scheduled to be available in February, with the Nikon version coming in March. In Japan, the price of the lens will be around 130,000 yen (£730/$1080).

The Photography Show has confirmed the line-up for audience-engaging feature areas, The Live Stage and Behind the Lens, for the next edition of the show, taking place at NEC Birmingham from 19-22 March 2016. Renowned Food Photographer, William Reavell, is among the names to appear on the Live Stage, presenting styling tips for creating beautiful food photography. Other speakers include Street Photographer, Matt Hart, on photography as therapy, Fashion and Beauty photographer, Steve Howdle, on syncing flash at high speed and Vicki Churchill, on turning the everyday into the spectacular.  Melanie East will also take to the stage to share her tips on the skills behind photographing babies. Behind the Lens will see a range of professionals - including Ram Shergill, Paul Colley and Tom Stoddart - lead sessions covering everything from wildlife to travel, landscape and more. Further names, seminars and features for The Photography Show 2016 will continue to be released over the coming weeks.

The winners of the 6th annual EEF/Lombard manufacturing photography competition have been unveiled at an exclusive ceremony at the House of Commons in London. The Best Professional Photographer award, sponsored by Canon, was snapped up by Mike Smith, from Newcastle, for his image of a seafloor production tool manufactured by Soil Machine Dynamics (above). The coveted Best Amateur Photographer award was won by Mark Tomlinson, from Sheffield, for his dramatic shot of work being undertaken at Sheffield Forgemasters. The Best Young Photographer award went to Jake Silverstone, aged 16, from Barnet in London, for his image of two iconic London routemaster buses, which had been manufactured half a century apart from each other.

The World Photography Organisation has issued the last call for entries to the Sony World Photography Awards. Free to enter, the Awards feature five competitions: Professional; Open; Youth; National Awards and Student Focus. The awards’ prizes include the latest Sony digital imaging equipment; inclusion in the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House, London; inclusion in the 2016 awards’ book and $30,000 for the overall winners. New for 2016, the 14 Professional categories are now divided into two distinct genres - Art and Documentary. The change is to provide a clearer structure in which photographers can be recognised. Both genres also include new category additions, with Art presenting the new Staged and Candid categories and Documentary now including Daily Life and Environment. The deadline for entries is 5 January 2016 for the national, youth and Open awards and 12 January 2016 for the Professional competition.

The company has found a malfunction that can, in rare cases, cause the camera to freeze when shooting in AF-C mode. Those X-T1 users who have already installed Firmware Version 4.20 can download Version 4.21 whose functions are same as the previous version of 4.10.

Nikon UK has announced that it will be exhibiting its product line-up at The Photography Show, held from 19th to 22nd March 2016 at the NEC in Birmingham. An interactive Nikon stand will showcase a range of DX and FX digital SLR cameras, Nikon 1 system CSCs, selected Coolpix models and Nikkor lenses. Central to the stand will be the Nikon School stage, where a host of speakers, including the current line-up of Nikon UK Ambassadors, will give talks on a range of photography topics to inspire passionate photographers. Remote-controlled from a smartphone or tablet, iris360 quickly captures high-resolution 360-degree images courtesy of its four sensors. Sony have expanded their PlayMemories Camera app lineup with Sky HDR, enabling users to independently control the exposure of land and sky and adjust different brightness levels in one picture. The application, which is compatible with a host of Sony cameras, also allows the user to set the white balance separately for the shadows and the highlights. After adjusting the exposure and white balance for land and sky the final image with its added effects can be created by pressing the shutter button. The Sky HDR app is now available to download for €9.99.

X-Rite and Pantone have announced that Color Finale from Color Grading Central is the first colour grading solution for video to fully support X-Rite’s new ColorChecker Passport Video target. When the target is included in shot setup, the Color Finale plug-in for Apple’s Final Cut Pro X can automatically perform colour corrections to adjust for color temperature issues, variances among cameras and other colour biases that can occur during video shoots. “We are very excited to be the first color grading solution for video to support the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Video targets,” said Denver Riddle, President of Color Grading Central. “By simply inserting the ColorChecker Passport Video into the frame prior to the ‘take,’ Color Finale removes all of the guesswork from colour correction in post so that filmmakers can feel confident that they are achieving a good, colour-accurate starting point from which they can then apply a creative look.”

Marsel van Oosten has been confirmed as the overall winner of the 2015 international Travel Photographer of the Year awardss (TPOTY). The Dutch photographer beat entrants from over 110 countries to scoop the top prize and the title of Travel Photographer of the Year 2015. The Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2015 is 18-year-old Chase Guttman from the USA. Chase’s fellow American, Spencer Cox (age 17), won Young TPOTY 15-18, while 13-year-old Indonesian Michael Theodric won Young TPOTY 14 and Under for the second year in a row. The winning images can be viewed in the 2015 Winners’ Gallery on the awards’ website.

Adobe has released version 2.1 of Lightroom for iOS.
