Redrock Microsystems have announced the Redrock Micro DSLR 2.0 line of cinema accessories for video-enabled DSLRs and the Panasonic Lumix GH1. Redrock Micro DSLR 2.0 delivers cinema support & accessories for hybrid still and cinema shooting with DSLRs, which, on their own, are not stable enough nor provide the features for cinema-style production. Redrock’s previous Cinema Bundles were already aimed at resolving these problems, but the DSLR 2.0 accessories provide a more portable, lightweight solution and are more affordable too, as the individual components can be purchased separately, starting at $195. The Redrock Micro DSLR 2.0 products are available now.

Panasonic has announced the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS42 digital camera. Like the FS12, the FS42 features a Lumix branded 4x zoom lens, but unusually, the lens on the FS42 comes without image stabilisation. Another point of difference is the pixel count: while the FS12 is a 12-megapixel model, the FS42 has “only” 10 million photosites on its sensor. The LCD is somewhat more modest too, measuring just 2.5” diagonally, although its resolution is the same at 230,000 dots. Finally, the choice of camera colours is limited to silver, black and pink.

The digital photo frame (DPF) market is on track to reach a trade value of nearly 750m Euros across Western Europe this year, up from less than 700m Euros in 2008. This has been revealed in an industry report by Futuresource Consulting, a specialist research and knowledge-based consulting company. Right now, digital photo frames are mainly bought as gifts, and “consumers are still not purchasing for their own use,” says James Wells, a consultant. The UK is projected to account for 26% of total Western European shipments this year, trailed by France (20%) and Germany (14%). And although 7” screens will continue to dominate the market, the price of 8” screens is forecast to drop to €100 in 2009.

Canon may lift its profit forecast for 2009 by nearly 13 percent. According to Reuters, the Japanese corporation is going to post an operating profit for the first quarter, and may revise its annual profit forecast upward by 12.5 percent. The news agency bases this assumption on a report by the Nikkei business daily, which says strong SLR sales and a weaker-than-expected yen have boosted profits in the January-March period to about 30 billion yen. Analysts have been estimating a loss of 18.7 billion yen for the first quarter, Reuters says. A profit of 30 billion would thus be a great surprise, even if it still represents an 82% drop against the same period of last year, blamed on Canon’s ailing core business of manufacturing printers, copiers and lithography equipment.
