We’d still recommend the Nikkor 24-70mm f/4 lens for enthusiasts and travel photographers purely for its size and affordability, but for professionals and experts the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is a no-brainer. It’s a top quality professional lens at the leading edge of optical performance.

The Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S is a general-purpose zoom designed for Nikon’s full-frame Z-series mirrorless cameras and offers a one stop faster focal ratio than the Z 24-70mm f4.0 S 'kit zoom'. It performed very well in all of my tests regarding contrast, resolution, focus speed and reliability, colour aberrations, and coma, producing very good image quality on a demanding 46MP Z7 body.

Any new camera system, such as the Nikon Z series, needs lenses to support it and one of the most important is the high quality standard zoom. There are many fine 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses on the market, so the potential of Nikon's new Z system can perhaps be fairly judged by their new offering, the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens. This promises superb performance, so let's start off our look at Z system lenses and see if it delivers that promise, and indeed if it could tempt us into a new camera system.

This might be the costliest Z-mount lens yet – and by some margin too – but its performance goes a long way to justifying that price tag. Aside from a couple of aberrations that are relatively easy to rectify, there's impressively little to fault. Handling is great, autofocus is beautifully smooth and fast, and detail is exceptional. What a lens!
