On paper, the Samsung 16-50mm f/2-2.8 S ED OIS ($1,299.99) is an exciting lens. It opens up all the way to f/2 at its widest angle, which is rare for a zoom lens, and covers a wide-angle to short telephoto field of view in its 3.1x range. Lab and field tests show it to be incredibly sharp through most of the frame, but there are some issues.

When Samsung first announced their 16-50mm f2-2.8 lens, we were incredibly excited that they offered something quite different from their previous products. The last very serious lens that they released was their 85mm f1.4, but now the company boasts a whole new level of professional quality–or at least that was the intent.
