At the Photokina 2018, the Tokina Opera 50mm f/1.4, a high-end standard lens for Nikon and Canon SLR cameras, was shown. Its availability was announced at the end of October 2018. I took the Tokina Opera 50 mm f/1.4 with me to Namibia in December 2018 to do practice shots. Then we subjected this lens to Imatest. The Tokina Opera 50mm f1.4 is the first lens that the Japanese lens manufacturer is launching as part of their newly introduced Opera premium lens lineup. These lenses are designed for high res, full frame DSLRs. During last year’s Photokina, we had the opportunity to spend some time with the Canon EF mount version of the lens and came away quite impressed.

Having recently reviewed the excellent HD Pentax-D FA* 50mm f/1.4 AW lens, there is a strong sense of deja vu as we look at the Tokina Opera 50mm f/1.4 FF lens for Nikon and Canon full frame cameras. Very clearly the two are closely related, maybe not 100% identical, but certainly sharing the same basic specification and build. So we have the potential here for another Zeiss-challenging 50mm optic, this time for Nikon and Canon, and it will be interesting indeed to see if the same potential is realised.
