The Terry O’Neill Award is now open for entries. Running since 2007, the Terry O’Neill Award is aimed at finding new talent and creating a platform for up-and-coming photographers. It is a unique competition in that it is based around the series or the narrative — photographers must enter a minimum of 3 (maximum of 6) pictures that tell a story. The entry fee is £5 per picture for students and £7 per picture for non-students. The closing date for entries is 22nd November. The top ten shortlisted series will be exhibited at The Strand Gallery in London from 17-31 January 2013. The overall winner will receive £3000, with the second and third prizes being £1000 and £500, respectively.

Tim Hunt, a 23 year-old photography student at University College Falmouth, has been named as the recipient of this year’s IPC/Sophie Smoliar Scholarship award. The awards ceremony will take place at Photokina, Professionals Stage, Hall 4.1. Booth I-50 on Thursday, 20th September at 3.30pm.

CEWE Photobook has launched its “Europe is Beautiful 2012” photo competition. Billed as the largest photo competition in Europe, the contest has four categories including ‘people’, ‘sports’, ‘city and nature’ and ‘culture and nature.’ You can submit up to 5 of your pictures in any of the four categories for a chance to win one of “many spectacular prizes.” The competiton is now live at the website below. Adore Noir Magazine has announced the winners of its black-and-white photography portfolio contest. The top six finalists who will be featured in Issue 10 of the magazine are Allan Gill, Alexei Krasnikov, Eric Kellerman, Russell Monk, Stan Raucher and Tommy Ingberg. The photograph that will grace the cover of the magazine will be revealed on October 1, 2012.

The Empire State Building (ESB) has launched the “My Empire State Building” photo contest. Photographers of all levels are invited to submit photos of the global icon through their creative eyes and lenses. The winning photographer will receive a Grand Prize of $5,000.

The 2012 Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards will be held on 3-5th October in Singapore. The Awards are being held in conjunction with THE ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW and the WORLD ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL. Entries close on 7th September 2012.

The second International Photographic Competition supported by BergHind Joseph is now open for entries. This year the competition will again be asking for images on the theme of leadership, but with a specific twist to reflect the world we live in. The three categories are Leadership in a time of change and uncertainty, Leadership through inspiration and Leadership and success.

EyeTime 2012 invites students and young professionals or enthusiasts to submit a collection of their photography comprised of up to three digital images. Sixteen finalists will be selected in each category: Emerging Talent and Future Voices. The competition is free to all entrants

Submissions are now open for Melbourne’s second open?air photo journalism essay exhibition. Prospective entrants are encouraged to submit a photo essay, of up to 10 images, that tell a story. The Long and the Short of It will screen the successful photo essays over a 3?week period at Federation Square. Applications close 5 October 2012.

Children with Cancer, a UK-based children’s charity, has extended its photography competition deadline to encourage more entrants. The contest theme is simply ‘Childhood’ and there are two categories for entrants: children (aged 16 years or under) and adults (aged 17 years or over). Each entry must be accompanied by a minimum donation of £5 for children and £10 for adults. The new deadline for entries is midnight on Friday 17th August 2012. In support of the Kata 3N1 camera sling / backpack and other bags in the Kata product line, Manfrotto Distribution and Kata have announced the Kata Online Quick Draw Challenge. For this online, interactive game, Kata has lined up four of the fastest camera slingers on the web. Each of the four characters is armed with a different KATA bag, which enables them to draw a camera and shoot quickly and with ease. Users are welcome to choose a character and try to draw their camera at home as quick as possible, and “shoot” their opponent before he or she shoots them. Another option to compete and win is to dress up as the most convincing camera slinger and submit the pictures to the contest. Both games are played via webcam, and 5 lucky winners will be chosen each month to receive a KATA 3-N-1 25 PL camera bag.

The UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) has announced a number of photo walks giving photographers unique ‘behind the scenes’ access to a number of British science laboratories. The science Photo Walks will be held at the Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire (11 September), Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire (13 September), Chilbolton Observatory in Hampshire (19 September) and United Kingdom Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC) in Edinburgh (21 September). Photographers will be able to enter their images to a regional, national and international competition for public and expert judging. The best British images will qualify for an international competition against images from laboratories in the United States, Germany, Italy and Canada. Places on the Photo Walks are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is reminding interested photographers that the deadline for entries for its 2012 photo competition is 31st August. The organisers are looking for the most inspirational and creative garden photography and are offering a top prize of £1000 for the overall winner. There is a selection of adult categories from wildlife and people in the garden to plant portraits. Children and young photographers are also invited to compete for the coveted title RHS Young Photographer of the Year, and to win prizes including a digital camera and photographic vouchers. The contest will run until 6th November, and photos will be judged based on the photographer’s creative ability to capture a three-dimensional space. Cancer Research UK has launched a photo competition as part of its ‘Made in the Shade’ campaign. Addressing the issue of rising skin cancer rates amongst young Britons, the campaign is looking to highlight the worrying relationship between sunburn and skin cancer. The competition invites UK residents aged 16 and older to submit their best photographs taken in the shade for a chance to win a studio recording session, the chance to attend a film or photography course, have their work published in Glamour online, or get tickets to a Premier League game or comedy gigs. Manchester-based Return on Digital has launched an Olympics-themed photography competition. “Through our Olympictures Twitter and Facebook accounts users can share what the games mean to them by either tweeting/sharing photos with the accounts or by using #olympictures,” explains Alex Duthie, SEO Executive at Return On Digital. “There will be a daily prize for our favourite photo and an overall prize of a digital camera.” You can read more about the competition at the website below.
