The prestigious Leica Oskar Barnack Awards are returning for the 36th time this year. Opening for entries on 1 March 2016, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award is one of the industry’s most prestigious photographic competitions. The winner in the main category will be honoured with a cash prize of 25,000 euros and Leica M-System equipment (a camera and lens) with an additional value of €10,000. Photographers interested in taking part can submit their applications and photographic projects online, with a closing date of 15 April 2016. The recipients of this year’s Awards will be honoured at an official prize-giving ceremony in Germany.

Colour Confidence have launched a new photography competition that will encourage people to experiment with colour in their everyday lives. The ‘Inspired by Colour’ competition is centred on a great opportunity to give budding photographers great exposure and to encourage them to get creative with colour,” says Geoffrey Clements, Managing Director at Colour Confidence. The competition can be entered via the company's Facebook page. Throughout the month, the public will vote for their favourite image. The person with the most votes at the end of each month will win a prize worth at least £100. The winners of the 6th annual EEF/Lombard manufacturing photography competition have been unveiled at an exclusive ceremony at the House of Commons in London. The Best Professional Photographer award, sponsored by Canon, was snapped up by Mike Smith, from Newcastle, for his image of a seafloor production tool manufactured by Soil Machine Dynamics (above). The coveted Best Amateur Photographer award was won by Mark Tomlinson, from Sheffield, for his dramatic shot of work being undertaken at Sheffield Forgemasters. The Best Young Photographer award went to Jake Silverstone, aged 16, from Barnet in London, for his image of two iconic London routemaster buses, which had been manufactured half a century apart from each other.

The World Photography Organisation has issued the last call for entries to the Sony World Photography Awards. Free to enter, the Awards feature five competitions: Professional; Open; Youth; National Awards and Student Focus. The awards’ prizes include the latest Sony digital imaging equipment; inclusion in the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House, London; inclusion in the 2016 awards’ book and $30,000 for the overall winners. New for 2016, the 14 Professional categories are now divided into two distinct genres - Art and Documentary. The change is to provide a clearer structure in which photographers can be recognised. Both genres also include new category additions, with Art presenting the new Staged and Candid categories and Documentary now including Daily Life and Environment. The deadline for entries is 5 January 2016 for the national, youth and Open awards and 12 January 2016 for the Professional competition.

Marsel van Oosten has been confirmed as the overall winner of the 2015 international Travel Photographer of the Year awardss (TPOTY). The Dutch photographer beat entrants from over 110 countries to scoop the top prize and the title of Travel Photographer of the Year 2015. The Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2015 is 18-year-old Chase Guttman from the USA. Chase’s fellow American, Spencer Cox (age 17), won Young TPOTY 15-18, while 13-year-old Indonesian Michael Theodric won Young TPOTY 14 and Under for the second year in a row. The World Press Photo Foundation has announced its 6th annual multimedia contest. There are 4 categories including Short Form, Long Form, Innovative Storytelling and Immersive Storytelling. Entries open today, 16 December 2015, and close on 20 January 2016, 12.00 (noon) CET.. Entrants must first register online at the 2016 World Press Photo Multimedia Contest entry website and then submit their entries. The shortlist of three nominees will be announced on 16 March 2016, 14.00 CET. The overall winner for each category will then be decided by a general jury comprising the four jury chairs and announced during the Awards Ceremony on 23 April 2016.

The World Press Photo Foundation has issued the call for entries for the 59th annual World Press Photo contest. Entries may only be submitted online via the entry site, which closes on 13 January 2016, 12.00 (noon) CET. This year, the World Press Photo Foundation has released a code of ethics, revised entry rules, detailed information on the judging process, and guidance to the new verification process — including four video examples of what is and is not considered to be manipulation. The contest’s categories have also been adjusted. In particular, a new category, Long-Term Projects - Groups, has been introduced and Portraits has been renamed to People. In addition, story entries (except for those in the Long-Term Project categories) will now have a maximum allowance of eight photos. The results of the 2016 photo contest will be announced on Thursday, 18 February 2016.

Entrants have until 31 March 2016 to submit their shots for a chance to earn great prizes, priceless exposure and be part of the worldwide Red Bull Illume Exhibit Tour. Entries are now being accepted for the International Images for Science competition 2016. Organised by The Royal Photographic Society, the contest is supported by Siemens as part of the Curiosity Project, a three-year programme which aims to engage young people with science and engineering. Entrants are required to take a visually appealing picture that tells a science story. The top 100 entries will be chosen by an expert panel to be exhibited at the British Science Festival in Swansea in September 2016 and then across the UK. The competition is free to enter, simply register online and upload your images to the website.
